Morrigan, always Morrigan (granted this opinion is coming from someone who romanced her).

1. Morrigan starts out bitchy and cold because she's not used to human contact, but you teach her about love and friendship and she grows and becomes this amazing character who is funny, clever, and actually a lot more sensitive than you'd have thought in the beginning (which is funny because Claudia Black, the one who voices her, has a very similar transformation with the character Aeryn Sun whom Claudia plays in the T.V. show Farscape).

2. Stats are irrelevant due to character respec ability, but Morrigan can shapeshift into animals which is pretty darn cool.

3. Morrigan plays a huge role in the Origins plot (Velanna is just a tag-along party member no more important to the story than Shale was).

4. Morrigan is a sexy beast

1. Velanna. She is just adorable.

2. Velanna. She starts out at a much higher level than Morrigan. Plus, her spells are actually useful. Shapeshifting is useful only for novelty value.

3. Velanna. The quest for her sister is a major plot point. Morrigan's quest involves retrieving a book and killing her mother. There is also some optional sexytimes, but only for a male warden.

4. Velanna. Not only is she a blonde, but her voice actor is very talented.

1. Both have a combination of being personally unpleasant and quite interesting when you get to know them, but Velanna feels overall more genuine and cares about people other than herself (and, in a romanced Morrigan's case, the Warden); in any case, I find her cause interesting. So Velanna.

2. Velanna, as her specialization isn't completely useless.

3. Morrigan is more important to Origins' story, but Velanna is probably the companion with the most at stake in Awakening's story, so this could be a tie. I find both their roles interesting.

4. I give this to Velanna because she has a less absurd outfit.

1. I relate more to Morrigan so I'd have to choose her (but Velanna is precious)

2. Morrigan

3. I'd have to say Velanna

4. Morrigan

I found Morrigan to be less of a hateful racist murderess, so I like Morrigan better. I also find her more charming (for lack of a better word) Plus, Claudia Black.

Well, I always execute Velanna because that b*tch deserves it.

1. Morrigan, she's charming and adorable in her own ways.
2. Doesn't really matter, since I mainly use mage companions as spirit healers.
3. Clearly Morrigan, without her the Warden wouldn't even make it to Awakening.
4. Morrigan, her outfit is outlandish but she's sexy.

Velanna. Her "misanthropy" (for lack of a better word) is at least passionate and emotional and tied to something bigger than her (her people). Morrigan is just that way out of indifference and coldness. It almost seems like Flemeth purposely raised Morrigan to be selfish just to ensure she'd survive and make a good vessel when the time came. Morrigan is fooled into thinking this is a preferable state of mind, but all it really does is make her an empty vessel with no connections. She has no concept of society, and only has a concern for power. I feel sorry for her. Flemeth on the other hand is nothing like her. She's funny, for one. And I'm not sure if she's all that selfish either. But she manipulates Morrigan to be something unlike herself.

Of course, things probably change for Morrigan if you romance her and/or she has a child. On her own though, I see Flemeth's victim.

edit: Heh. Sorry. That was just a long answer to the 1) Personality question.

2) Stats wise, Vellana. Both good mages to have around, but never could get much use out of shapeshifter for Morrigan

3) Morrigan

4) Velanna

1. Morrigan is a most curious creature. Her personality and thought process is more of an object of study to me, and is beyond liking or disliking. Velanna on the other hand is a bit more close to normalcy I think, hence her personality is a bit more easier to relate. The comaprison as a whole is not on.

2. Can't decide, large level gap between both at the time of joining.

3. Morrigan's part in the Origins saga is more memorable to me, she being present at crucial moments in both the beginning and the end of the campaign; having extensive dialogue options and character building moments makes her stand out quite a bit more. Velanna's part in the plot is a major one, but awakening being an expansion and all, their is not much of an 'Involvement' in the plot, so to speak.

4. I am not much fond of the DA elves, but strangely I liked Velanna's design more. Morri is more beautiful though.

1. Morrigan. Didn't really like Velanna's personality very much.

2. Velanna. Morrigan's shapeshifting is kinda crap, and Velanna can have three specializations. And starts with better spells.

3. Gonna have to give this to Morrigan. Mainly because she gives my Warden the option to actually survive the Archdemon.

4. Velanna. I strongly dislike Morrigan's outfit. And Grey DeLisle has an awesomesauce voice, so...

1) Morrigan's a lot more charming than Velanna, who was way more shouty. I'd probably never be tempted to kill Morrigan when I meet her.
2) Velanna isn't stuck with the Shapeshifter specialization, so I'll give this to her.
3) Velanna is only really related to it by proxy, through her sister, and even then her sister doesn't actually matter much. Morrigan, on the other hand, is an integral part of the story, leading you to Flemeth, taking you to Lothering, and most importantly, giving you an option to spawn some sort of monster baby or something.
4) Morrigan gets this by default, being the only Origins companion with a unique armour-design. Besides, I'm pretty sure Velanna nicked her hair.

1. Morrigan - She doles out her fair share of put-downs particularly at Alistair and Wynne, but I have to say that overall, her snarky commentary and other assorted banter has me more entertained and interested in her character. Her conversations are much more interesting, but then, she has the advantage of being in a much longer game with a lot more content to build upon her character development, so we get to see her go from prickly to warm over the course of the story.

2. Undecided - I don't really keep a close eye on stats, so I can't really comment on that.

3. Morrigan - The fact that Valenna can be killed upon first encounter pretty much makes Morri the winner by default.

4. Morrigan - Morrigan clearly wins this one. Her voice is better, and her overall appearance is much more unique. Her hair design has been reused for Valenna, and later for Athenril, but Morrigan's jet black version will always be the original and best.

As much as I dislike Morrigan when she makes dumb comments or just disapproves of you doing something decent and civil, she's kind of grown on me. And I do adore Claudia Black and her voice. I've been a fan of hers for ages. So Morrigan for the win mostly because I sort of see a lot of Claudia in her and even Morrigan, when you have become her friend, seems to be rather sincere. I imagine the same if you have romanced her. I should probably be suspicious of her after the ritual (and probably when I play witch hunt eventually) but she was never one to do anything bad. She aimed toward empowerment and using power to end the blight.

Morrigan, always Morrigan. She gets on my nerves sometimes, but she's nowhere as annoying as Velanna. She's a bit sociopathic but more reasonable, snarky and insightful. Velanna made me want to cast a fireball in her face every time she opened her mouth.

After my first playthrough I didn't recruit her anymore. My character wouldn't have made her a warden.

I had to create a mod so I could push Morrigan off the bridge in Lothering. I feel better now. Velanna, has her faults too, but I felt more tolerant towards her.

Velanna comes into the story with some skill.

Not an equitable comparison.

I preferred Velanna.

1. Personality: I can still struggle with liking Morrigan but she still easily beats Velanna here. I just can't stand Velanna, while I like elves and the Dalish and I had expected to enjoy her character. She just keeps acting nasty and rude and refuses to show remorse for killing innocents even when she find out she has been tricked.
2. Stats: Velanna I suppose, because shapeshifter is not very useful on Morrigan (I did enjoy it for my latest mage).
3. Involvement in story: Morrigan is much more relevant. The sister part of Velanna's story seems too brief and never gets resolved either. I think I will actually kill her if I do another playthrough. Sparing her just isn't worth it anymore.
4. Charcater design: that's more difficult. I like elves, so I'm going to go with Velanna here.

1. Personality-both are like nails on a chalkboard. If a gun was forced to my head-Morrigan I guess.

2. Stats-Shapeshifter is an awesome spec IMO. However, Velanna has Awakening spells and abilities. Velanna here.

3. involvement in story-The choice of the Dark Ritual is part of canon, and her recruitment is forced on you by Flemeth. Morrigan here.

4.Character design-I can't say either was very good.

1:Morrigan far more fleshed out and intriguing though to be fair Velanna doesn't get as much "screentime" in my games as I recruit her late in the game.

2.Velanna I just love the Keeper specialization.

3.Morrigan,no doubt about this.

4.Both though I prefer Morrigan's looks she looks more "exotic".
