I'm not going to lie, if permadeath was a thing in DA:I, then I wouldn't have any party members by the end of the game. That's not really fun, in my opinion.

Then again, many people here don't want gamers like me playing their Dragon Age.

Perma-death sucks in a game like Dragon Age. Hell, in any BioWare game. Why? Because if the game turns out to the horrible, we can always rely on Garru- I mean, on the characters to brighten things up. It's what makes DA2 fun! :-)

I wouldn't mind perma-death under certain conditions. For example: critical damage from fire makes them burn to a crisp. Then again, there are things like save imports to worry about and that causes another problem.

In the end, it's far too problematic for the series to even think about.

DA:I is gonna be roguelike?

I'm not quite sure what ya mean. I'm only throwing in my two cents to the discussion on this the last particular page.

Roguelike games where if you die, you cannot reload a new save. Once dead, you have to go back to the start; do not pass go, do not collect $200. But the levels are always randomized w/ each new game. That's real permadeath right there, mang.

Perma death is fine in game like silent storm or jagged alliance where you have plenty of companion to chose from or in flight sim in campaign mode.

In a game like with limited companion and where failiure is mesured by the main char dying, prema death is  call for
alt+f4/winkey==> task manager or alt+ctrl+del.
so i think perma-death should be story related (like in ME3 or for most of the Origin chars)
that being said i kind of like the idea of companion being on sick leave for a while if they are downed in combat.

The last game I played with a permadeath I didn't cause of FFT:WoT, While it sort of worked there, I don't know how it would in a more action oriented serious, based on the characters in the party, that will have "MOAR DEMONS" while you walk on a road.

You'd need balls of steel to work that one out.

Yeah, that's the main problem I'd have with permadeath. In Fallout, if my favorite character died, then I could deal with it because characters weren't that big of a deal. In Dragon Age, if my favorite character dies, then my favorite build is destroyed, and I can't interact with my favorite character anymore. That's the type of thing that would make me just put down a game for good. Minimal health regen is something that I can eventually adjust to, but I would dislike permadeath in a Dragon Age game.

and that rougelike thing sounds HORRIBLE.

I've seen a let's play (or part of it.) I would find the game boring (really, it's hard to capture me with just gameplay) but it looks bloody brutal.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It really shows on the last couple of pages on this thread.

I only played one game with permadeath (Fire Emblem: Awakening) my characters died so quick it was hilarious. Let's just say I had to start over with permadeath turned off! Half of the time I don't even know what I'm doing anyways, I just push buttons! It's impossible for me to plan and set things up, my brain doesn't work that way.

Camping like in Baldur's Gate where your party rests for the night. When they awaken their health / spells are ready to rock. And there is a chance of being attacked by wandering monsters / bandits while resting.

I admit that I usually make my first run for most games on casual for the story's sake and if I liked the game enough for more playthroughs, I move the difficulty up. With that said, I don't really see the problem. In Icewind Dale if one of my party members died, I had to pick up their corpse, all their gear which could Encumber all but my strongest fighter (which was a real bother if my strongest most heavily armoured fighter was the one who died), and then I had to carry him all the way back to the closest town with a temple to pay for a ressurection.

And if I didn't have enough money, I would have to vendor a bunch of items I'd rather not have had to vendor. And in spite of that, Icewind Dale was a really fun game. The worst outcome I see out of this is that my party can't just wade recklessly into a bunch of goons anymore without considering what I might have to face afterwards.

All I know is that I would be reloading a lot more than I would be playing. I can get attached to characters like a parasite and if one of them fell to permadeath that would definitely kill the vibe for me.

There is no way I would play or pay for a game designed like that. If I accidently bought it, I would return it for a refund. Life is too short to waste time with crap like that.

I'm sure you can get around that stupid design by making a backup of your save folder every hour or so, but I'll be damned if I'm going to actually buy something designed to aggravate me.

FTL: Faster than light's gotten really good acclaim and well liked by many people......but yeah.  Roguelike games like that tend to be fairly short.

I'm the same. I don't know how many times I had to reload a level of the Fire Emblem games because one of my characters died.

I sucked so bad at that game (Fire Emblem: Awakening), I had to turn permadeath off!

I can assure you that NetHack, Sword of Fargoal, ADOM and Angband has many players. NetHack has been in continous development since 1987 and is an offshoot of Hack (1985) which is an offshoot of Rogue (1980).

Also for a more modern roguelike there is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and  FTL (Faster Than Light). Not to mention Temple of Apshai, Warriors of Ra and Telengard.

I still fire up NetHack and immerse myself in that world.

Is that something based off Middle-Earth? (Or Beleriand if you wanna get into stuff.) Angband is Morgoth's fortress.

I assume that characters outside of the PC must be completely independent of the plot as well if they can perish at any time permanently throughout the game.
