recently got a pc good enough to play DAO without lag and was wondering about some good story based mods.

Like additional adventures? Or bug fixing/dialogue mods?
For bug fixtures I recommend IRS Alistair--has additional stuff if you plan on romancing him as well, Zevran Dialogue Fix, Morrigan restoration patch. They require a little tinkering to play nicely with each other, but definitely worth it. All are available on Nexus.
For adventures I have played Fragments of Ferelden (which I got off the project boards here), and Return to Korcari Wilds (on Nexus) and those were quite enjoyable. FoF is a standalone adventure separate from the warden's story. RtKW is included as part of your warden's game (I recommend being about 10th level before attempting to tackle it, as some of the combat is quite challenging). Those are the only 2 adventure mods I've played personally, though Nexus has more.
There is also the Ser Gilmore companion mod which is pretty good too. (check the list of incompatibilities on her project page to ensure you didn't DL something incompatible but it plays nicely with a lot of mods).
