Michel put his own personal honour before his country that makes him an ass in my opinion.
Please tell us more.

THANK YOU
Just finding one honorable one that's not obnoxious in some way is really all I want at this point. Didn't want the whole country to be... so one-dimensional like that.
Yay, I have hope!
Without spoilers, even characters that initially appear evil and self-serving may end up being honourable from a certain point of view.
The complexity of the characters is one of the best parts of the novel - I hope Inquisition has this level of writing, it's pretty exciting.

Bought the book on Kindle last night, read it in a little over 3 hours.
Enjoyable read.
The use of 'and' too much on the first page, and a couple of word-use issues later (which I think might possibly have been due to spell check using the wrong word?) but decent writing that picked up further along.
Liked the characters.
Liked Gaspard by the end, more so than Celene.
Although working in government, I can understand that changes come slowly, and a leader that forces change isn't a leader very long. Bri understood that at the start, but now....
The ending epilogue made me "aaaaaahhhh! I need more info!!!"
Interesting implications for DA:I

Oh, bull crap. He wanted to track down a freaking Forbidden One that he was responsible for unleashing. I'd say doing that is much more important than his country at the moment.

I am 99% sure it's up to us to slay the demon in Inquisition. Michel will be our quest giver or else we will find his corpse along with his journal and use that to track down it.

I agreeHe could have ended the civil war before it had properly begun but he didn't , the demon was his responsibility, he should clean up his own mess.
Though partly because I'm rooting for Celene

Meh, whatever. I still really liked him, and would like to see him and possibly help him combat Imshael.

See, this is why I love the book. All the characters are morally gray and by the end, I couldn't tell who is right or wrong. I suppose that was the point and this novel was one of the best I have ever read (recently). The beginning was slow and barely descriptive and a few word choices had me scratching my head later on but overall, it had be biting my nails the whole time. Even though it's fantasy, the way Weekes wrote it made it seem more down to Earth. It dealt with betrayal, racism, romance and, political intrigue. At first, I hated Gaspard but now....I have no clue. Both him and Celene are not saints nor are they evil.
One of the things I love from the book is how well Weekes weaved real-life institutions such as:
By the time DA:I rolls around, I know I will be torn between Gaspard and Celene and I have a feeling that Briala will probably be the drop that overflows the cup.
Now I can't wait until the game comes out. Why Weekes, why?! Why did you play with all my feels!? ![]()
And one last indulgence:

So much good stuff. Trying really hard to not see the intense spollers though, as I still don't have a copy yet.
Out of interest does anybody in the UK have a copy now? In physical form or digital, I don't mind which.

Amazon won't ship me my bloody copy. I guess that's what I get for ordering all 4 Dragon Age books at once.

Ok this is so, so, SO nit picky that it is not even worth mentioning . . .
But I'm going to anyway.
Early in the book a character mentions the birds flying south for the winter. Since Thedas is seemingly in the southern hemisphere (warmer in the Anderfels and a frozen tundra south of the Korcari Wilds) wouldn't the birds fly NORTH for the winter?

So the Orlesian Chevaliers have an informal initiation ritual: Chevaliers who have completed their training are required to go out to the alienage and kill random elves to prove their superiority to the peasants.
Wow, I'm going to enjoy killing some Orlesians.

I'm picking up Asunder again. Its been awhile and I want to reread it knowing more fully the political situation of Orlais presented in The Masked Empire.
I reread Asunder two days before I read The Masked Empire. It's really interesting to read them side-by-side because they're taking place during the same time line for a lot of it. And it's really interesting to see all the different parallels of what both sides are seeing.

Really great book, love Patrick Weekes' writing!
After finishing it though, I can honestly say that the only character I actually liked was Felassan.
I really hope we have an option to screw over the Orlesians in DAI, because I find their nobility a bunch of elitist douchebags, and their culture ridiculous and rife with cruelty. I definitely identify more with the Ferelden "dog-lords".
