Plus, Sera is described as "young" while Briala has to be in her early to mid-thirties in the book, which is definitely not considered young by marketing standards.

Just finished the novel and here's what I thought of it.

1. It's nice to know more about the Eluvians. I guess Morrigan (possibly the Warden) have explored this "in-between" place then? A land for the elves. Shame we didn't get to learn more about this place.

2. Another pleasant surprise is Imshael's involvement. I guess that leaves "The Formless One". Gaxkang and Xebeneck are banished (or maybe dead), Imshael is somewhere roaming free with Michel hunting him down.

3. What I don't understand is how Briala thinks she can pull this thing off. She probably doesn't have any intention of directly opposing Celene or Gaspard by force. She's using the Eluvians to help her people and at the same time play both sides of the war, which may lead to a victory for the elves, but can also lead to other countries moving in on Orlais, countries that will probably decimate the elves.

4. Loved how the Grand Game is shown here. The Grand Game is one the things I really want to appear in the games. Now since we will go to Orlais in Inquisition, hopefully we get to play the Game ourselves, somehow, or at least witness all the conspiracy and suspense first-hand.

5. The novel ended with Felassan dying at the hands of a person who wanted to take control of the Eluvians, or maybe this was just a servant to that person. I don't know. No idea who this person is.

Quick question, at the end of the novel, has the mage-templar war in Asunder already started? Was Celene back from the Eluvians before the templar-mage war officially started?

I wonder if Merrill will ever meet Briala. That'd be a thing.

Spoiler

I don't see the comparison. Merrill built her own Eluvian from a shard she took from the Elven Ruins (and later cleansed) based on lore she gathered and information she extrapolated from the shard. I thought being proactive about the plight of the People was admirable. The two situations are apples and oranges, however.

As for Merrill meeting Briala, I think it's unlikely, although it would certainly be interesting. I think Merrill would like what Briala is doing in helping their people. She also seems like an interesting character.

I think The Masked Empire and Asunder are supposed to be concurrent.

Could Briala be this "Sera" character we talk about in Inquisition? I was hoping for Sera to be her own character but from what I read in the book so far, Briala sounds like she could be the rogue elf companion in DA:I.

i thought that for a while but sera is supposed to be young and a brat; braila is in her 30s

I just reread Asunder.

When Asunder opens up, Celene has already left for Halamshiral. There are a few time skips in the book. Rhys spends a few days in a dungeon, then two weeks going too and from Adamant. When they return, the war is on in the south and people seem to think Celene is dead or holed up in Jader. Then a month passes until the gathering of mages. About another month passes between then and the mages gathering in Andoral's Reach. My best guess at the timeline is something like this.

________<Start>-------------------Asunder----------------------------<End>
<Start>----------------Masked Empire-----------------<End>

Got the book today and just finished it. Easily the best Bioware franchise book I've read, and I'm excited to see the consequences of what happened play out in Inquisition.

Focusing on purely materialistic explanations for group behavior is so seventies :P

Didn't Marethari say that if you die in your own Fade dream you become Tranquil or something?

Well, ask yourself, who has Felassan been comparing Briala to throughout the book?

Absolutely loved this book and the characters in it. Very exciting ending and loved how the book sets up some very interesting story elements for the game. I sincerely look forward to finding out more about all the major characters in the book, and hope to see at least some of them in the game. I can't believe I found all the characters interesting...that has never happened before. :)

^^spent most of my time in the Orlais related threads hoping that they wouldn't make it as black and white as "bad ruler has big army, good ruler has small army". And Patrick knocked it out of the ball park. I like elves, I don't like Orlesians, but so help me was Gaspard an appreciable bad-ass!

Simultaneously applauds and flails in anguish.  Have no idea who each of my Inquisitors will support.  My Dalish inquisitor is intended to be my canon inquisitor and I still have no idea.  May come down to circumstances and dialog options.  Excellent job Mr. Weekes.   I could tell you who each of my Wardens or Hawkes would likely support as they are more developed characters, but I love that my yet undeveloped Inquisitor will be on the fence.  Each of the main characters has compelling strengths and flaws that might benefit a given Inquisitors agenda.  And the Fen'Harel references, YES!   Trickster gods are so much fun,  whether they are inclined to domination (Loki) or simply mischief (Coyote in Native American mythos).  Have my own ideas about our Elvhen trickster,  I am willing to bet they will never be confirmed or denied.

For those of you who haven't read the book, it is an excellent and well written addition to Thedas lore.  Mr.  Weekes does a great job of character development and has some interesting (but not entirely unexpected) twists at the end.  Recently re-read "Asunder" and enjoyed the different perspectives on the conflicts that the Inquisitor will be facing.

Not sure how to mark a spoiler here, but am hoping a certain chevalier will have a place in Inquisition.
