Yikes, I hope not. She just sounds like Queen Elizabeth I of England, to me.

Far from it. She basicly have to keep a balancing board with progressing the empire and feeding to the delusions of the nobility.

She is Queen Elizabeth the first. You're not wrong. People just use the "mary sue" to make characters look worse than the ones they really like or character they don't like and have little reason to.

Someone should probably alter the title to say the thread has spoilers.

Done.

Also, if people are going to quote big chunks of text from the novel - or even plot points - use the spoiler tags!

That's what they're there for, after all.

Why?  Because she has power and uses it?

As for Celene being a Mary Sue, I disagree.

I also got this impression, mostly due to the way in which she uses her availability for marriage as a political weapon. Keeping suitors in her grasp while committing to nobody seems like a pretty crafty part of The Game that she's mastered.

(And I haven't read any more of the novel, but it seems like she might never be enthusiastic about marriage to a man.)

Of cource he think he is better than the others. He can't be humble. He is alpha man as general have to be. He is nature born leader, just like Loghain and another rulers. And yes- rulers aren't pleasant people. Tywin Lannister as an example.

That reminds me about girls who "want to marry humbe millionaire". You really don't know what do you want from character.

You do realise that Celene could also fit these description, right?

The Definition of a Mary Sue As It Has Come To Be Known on the Internet: Any reasonably competent character I don't personally like.

Anyone else get the feeling from the preview that this book is just setting up the Celene is the progressive "good" ruler, and Gaspard is the imperialist "evil" ruler. Then in Inquisition we'll have to choose who to support, Gaspard will have the armies that he will of course use to support our cause and Celene will have significantly less? I'm calling it.

It may be that ladyofpayne has the impression that, within her context, Celene comes over as a somewhat idealized character. Meaning she seems to be a comparatively broad-minded and decent person, yet she´s still a competent and effective ruler who plays the political game in what is basically a 2/3 evil fantasy empire (I guess Tevinter is 9/10 evil).

The Elizabeth I comparison is probably right on the money, although I have to say so far Celine feels very much like a ´lite´ version of Good Queen Bess (who was a pretty complex and not all that pleasant character).

Edit: Ah, Zebry had somewhat the same impression.

Nothing wrong with this, however. Tie-in novels aren't intended to be world literature, and many readers probably want at least some characters they can root for.

Did you wonder how this efficient and apparently tolerant ruler will react when she will be confronted to the biggest threat of her long lasting reign...? Cause I think someone could write an entire book about it. :)

There already poster saying Empress Celene is a mary sue and one of the definitions of a mary sue is that the character is just the self insertion of the personification of the author.

So if Celene is a mary sue, that would mean Weeks secretly wants to be a gay orlesian empress.(And yes, she Celene likes girls.)

Nah, she's not that clever. The all story will more likely end up in an old fashioned bloodbath, you know, to perpetuate the tradition. :D
