We don't really know what was involved in her coming to the throne.  Her father was a crown prince though.  She has a legitimate claim to the throne as she apparently outsmarted the rest of the contenders for the throne under Orlesian law.  Gaspard didn't consider her to be a threat and therefore didn't account for her and was apparently taken by surprise when she made her claim.

She wanted peace with Ferelden.  That was the purpose of the marriage, not to absorb Ferelden but to heal relations between the two countries.

Celene's father was a crown prince? Where was that mentioned? I thought she only had legitimate claim through her mother who was the younger sister of the late Emperor Florian. I'm just curious about that.

With that being said, I never thought of outsmarting the contenders for the throne was part of an Orlesian law. However, the way you described it, it would make sense for Celene to have legitimacy, not only through blood, but also because she won the "Game". It has been described that Orlesians (the nobility at least) like a good show of wit. The only problem I have with that though is the fact that many nobles believe her ascension was illegitimate. There is obviously something that Celene did or didn't do that warranted such a reaction. It's only gotten worse because Gaspard is fanning the flames.

And finally, while I'm sure that Celene wanted peace with Ferelden, I'm certain that it isn't so cut and dry. Officially, we don't know why she was willing to marry King Cailan but she is Orlesian and an Empress. She ascended the throne despite having only a small claim. If she were to marry King Cailan, what do you think would have happened? If they were to have any children, wouldn't her bloodline have legitimacy to the throne of Ferelden? I'm sure she wasn't looking to "annex" it but she still would have Ferelden in her pocket. It's a much better alternative than say, conquest, because we know how well that worked out last time.

Now, if she did have descendants then there would have probably been a Thedas equivalent of a Hundred Years War down the line so...yeah.

I guess we'll have to wait until the novel's out, though possibly it's not going to clarify much in that regard. Succession rules and crises can be pretty complex (if you go beyond the basics of simple male primogeniture), and if the writer or the worldbuilders aren't really interested in them, it's rather likely to remain vague and opaque. Or maybe they are interested and worked it out in detail, but keep things vague because they fear it's going to bore the audience. Who knows?

If so, DA is not alone in this. Succession rules in Martin's Westeros are also kinda fuzzy; I got the impression that Martin, history buff and all that, never quite understood the genealogical intricacies and succession rules that made the War of the Roses possible, and therefore basically kept them out of GoT.

Although...maybe he understood them very well and took pity on his audience. I seem to remember an early interview in which he said that he kept the really weird and difficult medieval stuff out. Accessibility über alles and all that. Anyway, I digress  ;) .

Maybe Orlesian succession is just a case of ' L' empereur est mort, vive le *backstabbity-stab-blackmail-poisoning-defenestration-stabbity-stab* * wheeze* *gasp* vive l' impératrice!'

It's not very regular and thoroughly un-French, takes a bit of time and is a recipe for frequent chaos but hey, at least it will be ' très amusant'.  ^_^

True, but there are other allies upon which the Inquisition can rely on no?

I'd be considerably concerned about being stabbed in the back or placed on a very short leash depending on who the Inquisitor bows down to in order to gain those resources. With Gaspard, you know he'd want total obedience and control. Celene I am somewhat uncertain about, but I daresay she'd expect some privileges and favors if not a new militaristic arm to add to her repertoire. Then comes the question of whether or not she'd send a bard to deal with me if I refuse to help her with something I don't feel the Inquisition should be meddling in.

For me it'd be a question of, how much am I willing to give up in order to secure the support of either a megalomaniac hellbent on dominating the surrounding territories or an egomaniac hellbent on keeping her pert bottom seated firmly on the throne by any means possible. How badly will this effect other countries/territories if I strengthen their hold on Orlais? Will I be stabbed in the back or kept like an obedient puppy? In all likelihood I'd probably cede to the elves. I'll have to play it by ear, I don't trust Celene but I will see how she behaves in game and in the new book when it is released.

You might want to try using a brighter tone of green. The text is almost invisible for the ones that are using the dark theme.

Back on topic:

I would really like that the conflict between her and Gaspard would be similar to the dwarves in DA:O when it comes to personality. I hope they make both characters a mix of despicable and admirable traits.

His features were still hawk-sharp and rugged, and he spent enough time outdoors to have tan lines around the edges where his mask normally sat

Description of Gaspard.

What does "hawk-sharp and rugged" Mean? Can you show actors or characters like that?

Could someone who's finished the book (eventually) post the pertinent spoilers in thread?

I'm imagining someone with a prominent but not bulbous nose... that's about all I get from that description. "Rugged" always seems like such a vague description I never know what to imagine.

Hawkish features meant someone who has a sharp, angular face with a narrow chin. I think Christian Bale could be described as having a hawkish face.  Bale doesn't have a rugged face, though. When I think rugged, the man doesn't have a smooth, pretty face. I think of men who spend a lot of time outside in all kinds of weather.

Nope. Strangely enough, many of the early readers have been as tight-lips as a Ben-Hassrath. Personally, I am very pleased.

You think it sets the stage for Inquisition? Lot's of vague answers.

Guess for those who have fallen from the Maker's/Stone's/Creator's favor, we'll find out on the 8th if we're lucky (stupid B&N).

Eh? We don't know much of the plot of inquisition. So saying that I think it sets up the stage for orlais isn't vague, as the plot of the game is just as vague.

Yeah, well, it's just like, my opinion man.

I meant no offense. I don't care if people post spoilers or not (it would be nice until after the book comes out). I'm just surprised that there hasn't been a wave of spoilers since we are in the fandom that hacked into the DAII demo and found the ME3 script. Not including you, everyone who has the book act as if there are chained by some sort of NDA contract (I'm sure they aren't).

Anyway, I wasn't expecting a definite response to Ericander77's question and in my opinion I don't think he/she meant plot but something to do with the Orlesian Civil War and the Elven Rebellion (correct me if I'm wrong) and whether If it's been resolved in the book or not. If not then there's is a good chance that it will be in Inquisition. Whether it will be a large portion of the game, who knows. That was all.

The book doesn't resolve the civil war + elf rebellion at all, in fact makes it kinda worse actually when I think about it haha. Which is why I figure it sets the stage. I have no problem answering stuff, I've done a few pm's. I just don't want to paste it all in this forum in case some poor guy accidentally spoils themselves :P
