I was wondering if there is a 3rd result for the Mage Origin? I know you can be called abad influence & screamed at by Gregor while the First Enchanter calls you a thief & a disappointment...I also know the First Enchanter will admit it was all his idea but you still look like a douche. lol. Is there a 3rd option for everyone to be happy, why do I have to help that bipolar kid named Jowan? lol.
Erm, you can go to Irving first. Then Irving says, "He was acting under my orders," and "He has served the Circle well." Now, you may feel bad for selling out your "friend" Jowan. But then again, he's pretty much asking you to take a trip to Aeonar so he and a Chantry girl can run away together and leave you holding the bag. That's not the most "friendly" thing to do, whatever he thinks about it.

Makes for better RP value, later on down the line.

Him being a blood mage kinda cements it. Irwing wouldn't lie about something like this - if he sez there's proof of Howan being a blood mage, then I have no reason not to trust him. That and even if I didn't trust him, my mage is smart enough to know that he can't go against both the Circle and the templars.
Jowans plan was doomed from the start.

I always tell Irving about Jowans plan and I love how Irving uses this to get back at the templars...very satisfying.

But I agree, that Jowan is a selfish douche who pretty much uses your character for his own ends, without any real regard for what the consequences might be for his "friend". But he is a royal screw up, over and over again. And it's so much fun insulting his girlfriend in front of him...lol! Jowan and the "fat chick" jokes...

I know its metagaming, but my 2nd playthrough I kept making him deny he's a blood mage. Made me feel good about ratting on him...
lol, that might work. Help me feel better. I think I'm going to take a break & not do a 4th play through or switch to a dwarf. Mages kind of suck in DA:O, image means a lot to me & I only have 1 robe I like even with mods. So the idea of wearing the same thing for the next 22-25 level just isn't an appealing one
Anyways thank you to everyone for all the replies.

One thing I found amusing was that I played through the mage origin as both a male and female (I had to restart), and whereas with a male mage, once Irving assured Geagoir I was working for him, Jowan said nothing, playing as a female mage made him accuse me of turning him in! Apparently Jowan only hears when attractive women turn him in to the authorities.
haha that is awesome!

Is that it. Interesting, because on my 2nd and 3rd mages, Jowan heard. They were both female. Jowan missed the "I told him to" line the first time with Caranar.
I don't see how helping Jowan is a 'better RP option.' He makes a rather weak denial of being a blood mage if you ask. There's clearly been books on blood magic where apprentices could get at them (rather large error by the staff, I would say). So it's believable he would have found them. Also it's clear that Jowan is acting nervous, twitchy and bringing you in on a scheme that if you think about it at all, will land you in Aeonor while he runs away.
Even if I'm playing a mage who's not 100% happy with the way things are, my mages aren't stupid enough to hang themselves for a 'friend' who wants you to take all the risk and be left holding the bag while he runs away. After all, his phylachtery may have been destroyed, but you know full well yours can't be, since it's en route to Denerim. So no, Jowan burns. And I have him executed when I see him again too. No regrets.

1. You can be a good little mage and completely turn Jowan in to Irving, but go through the whole plan in order to catch Lily in the act. I questioned this over and over because I didn't understand why Irving would let you go so far as to actually destroy Jowan's phylactery. He couldn't have stopped you before that?! But this is the "best" response you get from the templars, because Irving will insist that you were working for him the whole time, so he bears the brunt of the blame.
2. You can be bad and completely help Jowan and not tell Irving anything. In this case, you will get chewed out by both the templars and Irving and they will be very disappointed in you, but I felt like the disappointment was kind of muted.
3. In the third option, I talked to Irving after Jowan asked for help, but didn't reveal the plan. It was really interesting. Irving basically tells you that he doesn't know exactly what to believe and that making Jowan a Tranquil might be wrong, but he's already signed the papers and he's going to do it anyway. In that case, he was super disappointed in me because I could have told him what was going on and didn't. In this option, he doesn't even really want Duncan to take you. He tells him that you assisted a maleficar and have to be dealt with! In this case, I felt like Duncan was on the verge of invoking the Right of Conscription to get me out of there. LoL

This is the option I took. Jowan asks me for help, introduces me to his fat cow girlfriend, ect. Hmm...not sure...maybe Jowan i overreacting, as usual (you have to RP as having known Jowan a long time). So I go to irving. He confirms that Jowan is going to be made Tranquil, no turning back. Evidence coming from gregoir. My mage doesn't really trust the templars one bit, and thinks they would Tranquil someone for getting a paper cut. Besides, my mage has known Jowan for a long time. He's an idiot, and barely has the wit and talent to cast even a simple cantrip properly. To believe him guilty of something as seemingly complex as blood magic (she knows next to nothing about it, but assumes it takes some sort of intelligence and talent to master, given that it's dangerous) seems far fetched and ridiculous. His claim of sneaking around to meet his girlfriend in secret seems plausible. She decides Jowan is just a very unlucky idiot, and really hates the whole idea of anyone getting tranquiled. So she agrees to help him out. Whether the Circle or Aeonar, she's still in a prison, no matter what. Might as well help someone escape the confinement.
This scenario, from an RP perspective, creates interesting challenges and problems later on down the line. Which is why i chose it.
