I play Mages that are more loyal to Irving (as a father figure more than a leader or such) than to the Circle, so the Best RP decision is to reveal everything to Irving. Friendship is nice, yes, but what Jowan asks is dangerous. I even got that impression my first play-thru.

What I really wish could have happened is an option to kill Cullen during Broken Circle, tho. ESPECIALLY with a Mage Origin. I mean, really... yes, the poor boy is frightened, but to try to order someone to kill off your friends just because one person turned? Just tell Greagoir that he was charmed/possessed. He'd buy it.

Regarding Cullen, I agree after reading how he interacts with the Ferelden Circle in the epilogue.

I'm currently in my 2nd try at a mage character, and again finding that I am bogging down. My 1st try I  ended up ditching the character mid-game. I thought it was just that character and some of her game choices that I ended up not liking, but I'm starting to feel the same wandering attention span in this playthrough, too. I think it is because there is so little emotional tie to the game world for a mage character. All of her companions have a personal quest, but where is her personal quest? Going back to the Tower was hardly that. I mean, she was so glad to see the back of that place the first time, and it was hardly emotionally satisfying to go back and shake hands with the Knight Commander who admits he doesn't really care if you're dead and the templar you thought was your friend but who so obviously would slaughter you if given half the chance.

I guess that a decision was made to leave the mage's backstory completely open, but I wish that wasn't so. If there was some way for my mage character to find her family, or learn something of her background, in the game events, then it would feel like something was driving the story that is personal to her. Similar to the Cousland tie-in or the return to the alienage for a city elf.

Being your friend doesn't mean "Doing anything he says just because he asks." And it is spelled out that the Templars cannot simply act without Irving's permission. Heck, even in the Broken Circle quest, Greagoir isn't willing to step into Irving's authority.

Now, you can think Irving is duplicitous. And he is (but then, not entirely without reason). But seeing as with any kind of questioning you can figure out Jowan is trying to manipulate you too...really, what's worse?

Not that I'm going to tell anyone how to RP their character. But even my PC who took for his boon the Circle's freedom would say being hung out to dry by your 'friend' is not a sign of a true friend, but rather someone who sought to use you.

Part of roleplaying is your character changing, learning from interactions with others.

One does not have to see Jowan as "bestest buddies" to want to help him. There can be many motivations. A PC is not necessarily stupid for helping out Jowan, anymore than a PC or tattles to Irving is a bootlicker. it's all about how you see your character's personality, background, and motives.

Personally, I like thinking of my elven mage characters as being distantly related to Shiana and Soris.  Whenever the option comes up in conversation, I play it out that my character was born in the Denerim Alianage, but was taken at an early age.  Only vague memories of the place and their family.

Please note that I've said a number of times in this thread I am certainly not trying to tell anyone how to RP their character. :)

All I'm saying is that being Jowan's "friend" doesn't mean you have to hang yourself out to dry. Certainly, any player should do what is consistent with their PC.

I roleplay, too- for my current character I have her as being born to elven servants in Highever.  My plan is for her to end up Alistair's chancellor.  She'll eventually be re-introduced to her childhood playmate, the teyrn's daughter, who survived Rendon Howe's slaughter of the Couslands, fled to Orlais, and returns to Ferelden with the Orlesian Grey Wardens.  Lady Cousland, who had been contemplating becoming a Waden herself, will decide that her talents might be better put to use for Ferelden by marrying the Grey Warden on the throne, administering his lands and bearing his heir.  She'll look strangely like the woman in my avatar.  ;)

However, I still miss something in the actual gameplay of a mage character.  I didn't have trouble working my way into the other origins I've played.

I felt a little disapointed that I could never follow up with what happened to Lilly. I rather felt sorry for her... I like to imagine my character would conscript her into the gray wardens post game if she still seemed to be in sound mind.
