1. Denerim
2. Broken Circle or Haven
...
9. Redcliffe

Denerim is always the first stop after Lothering, unless the Warden is a rogue.

Between the Market District and The Pearl you can earn quite a bit of money and - more importantly - Leliana and Morrigan can get the rest of the experience they need for levelling up for the first time. That gives the party basic lock/trap disarm ability and the mighty Cone of Cold. Tomes alone won't do at that point, since both Morrigan and Leliana need to improve their primary stats before they can learn their most urgently needed new abilities.

After that, the party is in a shape to travel pretty much anywhere, except that Leliana still cannot beat the more difficult locks and traps (DC 45 and up). Certain random encounters, like the one with many locks and traps, can be avoided early on by booking specific encounters for any travelling that needs to be done. One side-quest gives you a guaranteed boss-level abomination instead of a random encounter, another questlet gives you the Seal of Rat Red instead, stuff like that.

Plus, it is in Denerim that you initiate the quest line for Wade's raw materials, and Leliana needs to go to Denerim anyway in order to deal with some issues from her past and to pick up some nice kit. There is a good chance to avoid the Denerim phylactery, by restricting travel in Denerim itself to the necessary minimum (The Pearl) and by travelling back to the market district by way of the camp if there is no specific encounter booked. That way you can leave the phylactery for later, when the team can eat revenants for breakfast. You have to do some major questing anyway before you can book the other revenant there; two birds, one stone.

The Broken Circle is very often the first major stop after that, because otherwise the Warden would have to overspend on secondary stats like cunning for skill/ability requirements.

In all other respects it is Haven that makes the ideal first major stop, as a kind of proving ground for the new team. It does have some minor challenges but no major headaches (like a certain spider queen elsewhere), and you get the raw materials for Wade so that he can get busy making some nice armour.

Redcliffe itself is always last, because you need a fully trained and equipped team with sufficient combat experience in order to do a decent job there. Otherwise you are bound to lose some allies or some kills. So the team only goes there after everything else is wound up and all lose ends are dealth with. It serves as a nice dress rehearsal for what comes next. Besides, any secondary abilities that a character may want to learn for peak efficiency in the endgame (e.g. the Whirlwind dual-wield line for a sword & board warrior) are just as useful to have in Redcliffe, for pretty much the same reasons.

These are the only fixed points. Everything else gets varied as much as possible, except for two things. The Warden's Keep requires the Fireball spell, for knocking Avernus into a circle. So we don't go there if we don't have the spell. The big battle in the Deep Trenches is most fun if the team has spells like Fireball and Inferno, and the melees are wearing Wade's superior armour. If you have these toys then the battle is absolutely glorious, so I don't like to go there without them.

Redcliffe, Circle and Honnleath are the first three, but the order isn't set. Circle would obvs be first if you're metagaming for the Attribute points, and Wynne has a LOT of camp dialogue, so it's better to get her sooner rather than later. And she's a massive boon in combat besides.

Redcliffe probably makes the most sense story-wise since Alistair suggests it, and you know the Arl is sick from Lothering. Plus it gives you a reason to go to the Circle besides.

Honnleath is the best if you're solo-ing. It's fairly easy and there's very tasty loot.

Then it's Ostagar (and Flemeth), Denerim, Warden's Keep and Haven.

Orzammar is a little harder than the Brecillian Forest and so should probably be left until last. But it also gives you tasty loot and Oghren who I like to give a little screen time to, so I usually do the Elves last.

In short, usual line-up:

Circle
Redcliffe
Honnleath
Ostagar
Denerim
Warden's Keep
Haven
Orzammar
Brecilian Forest

vary depending on the character
city/dalish elves prioritise Dalish elves. then circle, redcliffe
whereas a mage would go to the tower first
a Dwarf would go to Orzannar first
a Human noble picking Redcliffe

Orzammar

Before i go to the Circle, I'll pick up Shale and clean up Denerim's gangs. After the Circle, I'll do Warden's Keep. I'll wait on RTO until around the time of the Landsmeet.

I like to gain control of the NPC's early. Make of that what you will. So on my last play through my city elf warden did the Stone Prisoner first, solo, to recruit Shale. She then did Soldier's Peak for the party chest and the start to Return to Ostagar. She then cleaned up Denerim by doing all available quests there as well as the two field trips. Normally Broken Circle would be next, but she really preferred elves to humans so she set off for the Brecilian Forest, finished the quests there then ran out Orzammar until just past Jarvia. With Oghren safely in camp, the Tower followed, then Haven and the rest of the Deep Roads. She confronted Flemeth and returned to Ostagar, saving Redcliffe for last. At that point Wynne had all the heals so saving the villagers was trivial.

I used the following mods: Skip the Fade, ZDF, Dialogue Tweaks, Early Zevran, and No Helmets.

Getting as many companions as early as possible means I can control what skills and talents they pick up. It also means that I can vary the party for better dialogue fun, as well as starting romances early.

What are your thoughts on that? I like to take RtO early, while the memory of Ostagar and King Cailan is still fresh. He is the only character who has specific, superbly written dialogue for every origin. Glorious!

The Dryden brothers can upgrade the arms and armour to tier 7, if necessary, so that the broken loot drops are merely a financial problem.

I do it that late mostly for the Loghain dialogue when he finds the letters, which means after the Landsmeet. It's been a while since I haven't recruited Loghain. I might go with Alistair next playthrough with a mage, after I finish Awakenings and the DLC with my warrior.

Like the other DLC's, it's not too difficult, so it's quite viable to do it early. Plus, it has a few nice items you might like to get sooner rather than later.

I suppose story-wise it's better to do it early, since the mid-section of the game where you're doing the treaty quests takes several months in game-time, and I wouldn't like to see the state of Cailan's body after that long...

Really I just slot the DLC missions in as and when I'm passing that way (I don't like to jump widly about the map too much for immersion reasons). The Stone Prisoner is the only one I have in mind to get to early, and that's only because I want to recruit Shale asap.

I go to Denerim first from Lothering, asuming Eamon could be my most powerful ally but he is sick so we need to get his cure, So I do all Denerim quests I can, pick up the urn quest.
Then its Haven, Redcliffe, circle, forest then Orzimmar. I leave the DLC for as long as possible and only getting Shale just before going to Orzimmar so I can get the highest crystals I can from the loots.

I typically do Warden's Keep first, for the party chest. After that, it depends on the character I'm playing. Redcliffe is usually either last or next to last. The missions in Denerim I usually spread out throughout the game. The Circle comes pretty early, but I usually skip the Fade until later. I mainly do it that early to get Wynne and Zevran faster.

My prefered order, after completing Lothering:

Warden's Keep DLC - I want to get the party chest nice and early, to save me from having to constantly lug everything around at all times, plus some nice item and armor upggrades for my party.

Return to Ostager DLC - Completes my party's initial armor/weapon upgrades, though it will be a few levels before Cailin;s armor can be equipped.

The Stone Prisoner DLC - Gets me access to Shale.

Broken Circle - Give me Wynn, a shed-load of additional stats from the Fade section, and (assuming I save the Mages) the option to use the 'best' solution to resolve the Redcliffe situation.

Redcliffe - Logical to do it at this stage, as I have Mage support, plus I'm going to be sent to Denerim next for Urn Of Sacred  Ashes preliminary quests.

Denerim - To continue the story, and get the rest of the side quests etc.

Haven - Complete Urn of Sacred Ashes, plus get the Scales for Wade's armor set.

Denerim pt2 - Make Wade's armor, which should be equippable by now,

Brecillian Forest - Get Juggernaut armor set for Alistair, get a few more side quests out the way.

Frostback Mountains - Legion armor for Oghren, and Effort/Duty set for Sten, now that's my party all properly equipped.

Wrap up any outstanding business, and then on to the Landsmeet...

Always got to get Oghren first. Then to Soldier's Peak. Oghren's dialogue and Avernus' reaction and response are worth it.

The rest is usually different every time, however the forest elves I save for last.

Redcliffe would be the obvious choice after Lothering, but on my most recen playthrough, I started with the Circle (my dwarf understands the great importance of mages really well). Then he went back to Orzammar to see his fathe- that went different than expected.
After that it was time to go to Redcliffe, collect the Urn of Sacred Ashes and then go for the last treaty. After that, it was time for Denerim and the endgame.

My canon warden started out as a very young and cautious mage who considered the idea of her and Alistair gaining support on their own madness, let alone managing to end the blight.

1) Redcliffe. Makes the most sense since my warden was a mage. She had no idea whether she could even find the dalish camp, the Brecillian forest is huge.

2) Circle Tower. Closest to Redcliffe and "home", meaning she thought it easier to gain support there. They could also gain more insight into Eamon's illness. Not found in game but hey, I hoped Irving would come up with something cause he's old and wizardy. Oh well.

3) Orzammar. Again, closer to Calenhad than Denerim. Besides, I didn't exactly have faith in the search for the Ashes. Starting to gain a bit of confidence here.

4) Denerim to look for Brother Genitivi.

5) Urn of Sacred Ashes quest.

6) Dalish. Eamon has to prepare for the landsmeet and it's the only treaty left.

7) Denerim, Landsmeet quests.

Edited for horrid grammar.

Mage Tower (for the points) > Honnleath > Denerim > Haven > Redcliffe > Orzammar > Brecilian Forest > Landsmeet

Sometimes I would switch up the middle ones for something different but I always put off the Dalish section for as long as I can just because of how mind-numbingly boring I find it.
