Well, sure, anything could work as an FPS with a little tweaking of the mechanics (besides the change of perspective, of course). The more important question is why would anyone want it to be an FPS. There are plenty of them already. I would never want a Mass Effect game that didn't have the option to at least switch between them, because I think it would lose a good deal of interaction with the characters and environment if it stayed in first person.

I think it sounds interesting. I'd prefer third person, with maybe the option to change perspectives. The Star Wars Battlefront games had a feature like that. I thought it was pretty cool.

What if... hear me out, guys... what if, you know, you could switch between First Person and Third Person perspectives at any point in the game like, say, Fallout New Vegas or Skyrim?

Would that REALLY be so bad?

Yes.

At least if we are talking about a shift in genre rather than just game mechanics. By their very nature shooters are linear and story and exploration takes a backseat to the pew pew. It takes the priorities of RPGs and reverses them. Turning Mass Effect into a pure shooter would be dumbing down the series for the ADHD gamer who can't sit through stretches of dialogue without mashing the spacebar to skip.

Of course.

I'm telling you this as a fan of both Mass Effect Trilogy and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

...And who said that game with FPS core gameplay can't have RPG elements at some capacity?

There's more to Mass Effect than just that vague description of "RPG elements" though. I'm of the mindset that if you can't translate that cover system from 3rd person to 1st person then Mass Effect fails to work as an FPS because the cover system is a big part of its combat.

They made cover systems work well in Rainbow Six Vegas.

Essentially, yeah.  The answer would lie somewhere between Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, and Dishonored.

That said: Could ≠ Should.

True. I was thinking about cover systems that stayed in first person though. Rainbow Six Vegas's was a copout so the team didn't have too much of a design challenge.

Yes, absolutely. I think first-person would be a great fit for Mass Effect.
