I still have a really hard time with a fitnessless Phoenix adept. He's a ton of fun to play but even on lolsilver I get dropped a lot with that guy. But I seem to recall he has broken fitness evos or something like that?

^ Nah, it's just that smash takes so long to perform and you don't get any DR while doing it. Makes him feel way more squishy.

To be fair there's not much reason to put passives to six ranks on the Phoenix Adept.

I was trying to run him melee because the smash melee thing is so awesome I can't handle it (apparently literally). But he just drops. I run my vanilla adept melee too (with essentially the same build as far as passives and fitness tree are concerned) and she seems to be able to take a lot more hits than he can. To be fair though, I think the fact that lash and smash are bass ackwards in terms of primer and detonator messes with me more than anything else on that kit.

Uh, every power that the phoenix has can both prime and detonate... just sayin.

OT: I rarely skip fitness entirely, it is very underrated here on BSN.

Yes but you can't prime with lash and then detonate with smash. Which is bass ackwards.

EDIT:  Singularity doesn't detonate.

All three powers prime. Lash doesn't prime or detonate armour.

That's all.

fitness is overrated. you want shields? oops pack. you want health? oops pack.

powers/equipment/gear should be all about dishing damage, one way or another.

Adrenaline  module, besides allowing you to speed tank everything while shooting back., also has the added benefit of getting you and your bullets to the enemy faster.

I've read this but never once been able to prime with lash and detonate with smash on a non-armoured target.  Maybe I'm just glitching out or seomthing.

I found Geth Scanner and Cyclonic almost neccessary as I grew accustomed to playing him fitnessless, now I usually run CSMG, Scanner and Power Amp IV.

Lash's priming window is miniscule compared to that of say Reave or Warp. It is possible, but it requires a quick cooldown and Lash to have pulled the target signifcantly closer to you.

Aha! Thank you. I've been asking about this for... however long this kit has been out and never gotten an answer.

Try the phoenix vanguard instead for the melee build. I've been running it for a while now and it's fun. Charge adds survivability and helps in getting out of sticky situations. Also charge + smash + smash cancel with heavy melee is just pure awesome sauce :)

I've been meaning to try that one out but I rarely host so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Smashguard is probably the best power/melee hybrid to play off host.

Well, in almost every case sometimes putting points into your powers is more worth it than fitness.

Singularity detonates with the Detonate evolution after its duration.
Singularity > Smash = BE > Smash until Singularity duration ends = BE

Fitness is a waste of points beyond rank 2. You're almost always going to want to put 2 ranks in fitness, but any more than that is a waste. There are a few exceptions:

- Juggernaut: always max out fitness. Always.
- Krolord: always max out fitness. Always.
- Drell: good to max out fitness because you get 20% movement speed bonus.
- Destroyer: if you decide you really absolutely hate and can't stand the missile launcher or the multifrags, then you can max fitness, but that's not recommended.
- Krogans and batarians: you might want to take fitness to rank 4 or you could even go to rank 6 if you decide that you don't want carnage/lift grenades/tech armour/blade armour whatever.

But for all the other characters, fitness is useless and a waste of points beyond rank 2. Asari, quarians, humans with 500 base shields, turians, salarians...DO NOT spec into full fitness. Never. If you want to be more tanky, use a cyclonic 4, it's infinitely more useful than fitness.

When I started off playing, I used to max out fitness all the time because I had no idea what I was doing, I thought HP works the same as in other games, but it's completely different, investing in fitness makes very little difference to your survivability. This game relies on health and shield gate, you can't really be in the face of your enemy, you have to be very cautious and use a lot of soft cover. It's not practical to try to tank all damage head on, the best way to survive is to be able to dodge, move fast and use soft cover often. Geth scanner helps in a huge way.

Wait.  You're telling me that the detonate evo (which I always go with anyway) will detonate a BE?  How is it that after 2 years I still keep finding out new things about this game.

It's situational - mostly works when funneling the enemy and without good players who kill all the things before it happens.

Thanks for the new info you guys. I'm off to burn all of my respec cards figuring out a melee Smashguard. Suicide charge or barrier? To lash or not to lash? So many choices.

I have melee smashguard set up with suicide charge (like I said charge + smash + smash cancel with heavy melee is just too juicy combo to miss) and no lash. You could drop the last evo from passives to get 3 points in lash if you like (I prefer it either full or non). I prefer Venom when playing him Image IPB

Yeah lash is full or none; I'm going to try full first (still need to max my vanguards after randomly deciding I wanted the N7 banner). Normally if I max lash I go with the shield barrier thing but I'm tempted to try the other option for the chance of no cooldown thing (lengthening the BE prime might be nice too I suppose). It works well on my asariguard with stasis and suicide charge on the rare occasion I fully spec stasis on her. SO I guess once I'm back at 20 my first full attempt will be with no passives, even though that will gimp my weight a bit.  Most of my melee kits end up with no passives, though (cabal being my notable exception) so that's not that far afield for me.

I just did my first try with suicide charge and I think that's my preference as well.

My venom is only 4 to my Wraith 6 so for weight purposes I'm sticking with the Wraith for now.
