Seems like they used the one animation for either scenario. Shep is stressed either because their LI or close friend got hurt, but if you're not close friends or an LI it comes of a really hammy. I remember my femshep had a similar reaction to Ashley despite that not even being an option as an LI.Nightwriter wrote...
My Shepard acted romantically grief-stricken over the VS even though I moved on to someone else in ME2 and preferred that person. What you describe sounds like an accidental romance flag or something.

"We should stay professional, Kaidan."
You just know they'll be meeting in the Normandy's hallways and awkwardly coughing while talking about that thing they have to go do.

/that same scene with Ashley with a Liaramance:
"Shepard. Isn't it worth trying at least?"
"I'm going to go check on Ashley and James."
Same scene with no romance with ME1 squadmate:
"Commander. Isn't it worth trying at least?"
"I'm going to check on Ashley and James."
Same scene with Romance path with Ashley:
"Commander. Isn't it worth trying at least?"
"I'm going to go check on Ash."
All of that other stuff is the same. Only the end dialogue does. The OP is experiencing ME3's "I guess that's just (e)motion." Not a bug.

gibbed allows players to set romance flags. you are correct it doesn't fix bugs. it does however allow you to tweak variance in relationships and there is the checkbox romance on/off option.

I can understand where the OP is coming from. I'd say the Liara intro on Mars is equally awkward for those who don't romance her. "Liaaaaraaaaa!"General TSAR wrote...
It's just BioWare railroading affection, my Shepard hugged Liara in ME2 even though he hated her guts in ME1 and made that abundantly clear several times.

The really funny thing is that a Shep actually romancing Liara is a good bit more reserved. The whole romance is so understated until the love scene that I seriously wondered if she wanted to dump me and was too polite to say so.DeinonSlayer wrote...

The only Shepard of mine who romanced Liara switched to Garrus in ME2. Maybe the dialogue got switched there. I know Shepards who romanced Tali are audibly more happy to see her. Probably meant to be the same for Liara.jtav wrote...

What? That's impossible unmodded. Bio didn't implement any M/M romance in ME1.

None of the scenes you've described so far qualify as romance. Unless you want buttsex with everyone you've ever been concerned about.

Sirta Supplies (via the kiosk in Huerta Memorial Hospital or the procurement terminal in the Normandy's shuttle bay) - Do not purchase the "TM88 - Peruvian Whiskey".
When visiting Kaiden in Huerta Memorial Hospital the second time do not select Investigate -> "How are your biotics?"

I am one of the rare individuals who has not done the ME3 single-player campaign.* I am finally doing so. I imported a male Shep who saived Kaidan on Virmire and got with Jack in ME2 (seriously, best character in the series).
I have just gotten through with Priority: Mars. As I'm sure you're all aware, Kaidan gets his head caved in by a robot at the end of that mission. Shepard carries Kaidan back aboard, and then...I don't know. Appears to completely lose his head, staring longingly at Kaidan in medbay, to the point where Liara has to interrupt his line of sight, twice, in order to get him to do something other than look like he's about to cry.
This has me concerned that I somehow inadvertently got on the romance path with him. I'm aware he's a potential romance option for male Shepards. I restarted the mission and exclusively used Renegade dialogue with him this time, but the same cutscene resulted. I'm dearly hoping that saving Kaidan on Virmire doesn't automatically put you on the romance path with him two games later, because even Shepard's conversation with an unconscious Kaidan when I continued along and got to the Citadel seemed...charged.
*I figured there would be plenty of DLC, and wanted to wait to do a single, final playthrough of the last game in the trilogy until it was complete, and just did MP in the meantime. By the time that occurred, I'd kind of forgotten about the game.
If Shepard carried Kaidan back to the Normandy over the shoulder in a fireman's carry, you are not on the romance path.
If Kaidan was carried back cradled in Shepard's arms, then yes, somehow you are on the romance path.
Shep's reaction to the VS's injuried are apparantly identical back on board. Which I can see as being quite awkward if Shep wasn't in a romance or otherwise BFFs with them.
