And other common medieval weaponry? At what point did game developers forget that other weapons exist outside swords maces and axes? Are we to believe that the people of Tamriel have lost the ancient knowledge of attaching pointing objects to elongated sticks and the people of Thedas skipped over that stage of weapons development and went straight onto swords?

You would have to make different animations for them(unless it's like a glaive). That seems to be the biggest sticking point.

Spears need different animations is the problem. Really, polearms would probably have to be their own set alongside one hand and two hand if they're to be PC wieldable.

too many resources, but with the technologically superior Qunari joining maybe we too can throw pointy sticks

Yes we all know the argument as to why the developers choose to cut such weaponry out, the question is not the why of it but more when did this become a trend?

But that being said would creating animations for spears and other types of medieval weaponry really put that much of a strain on the animation budget? I mean we see games like Dark Souls have different animations for not only different weapons but even weapons that belong to a similar type (longsword and katana have different animations and there are plenty more examples) so what exaclty is putting such a strain on Bioware's animation budget that they cant aford more than 2 styles of melee combat animation? Are they really so strained that they cant aford to animate spears which are one of the most common medieval weapons?

Maybe the Human Sworders killed all of the Human Spear-guys thus the Spear-guys went extinct

I actually lolled.

That's the best explanation of the evolution of military warfare I've ever heard.

Cause they don't want their players to become little pike twirlers like Alistair

It diddn't but apparently Oghren might know a thing or two about their disappearance as he seems to know of their existance.

It was in a conversation with Oghren that somebody thought was a euphemism but it was Alistair practicing twirling pikes

When the animations stopped being extremely basic, I think.

Well actually, they are kinda in a game, they're just denoted as staves- gameplay wise:
  • Apostate Staff/Crooked Staff
  • Apostate's Courage
  • Bassrath-Kata/Chanters' Staff/Eye of the Storm/Sketch's Resplit-Shaft
  • Commissioned Enchanters' Staff/Torch of Falon'Din
  • Staff of Parlathan
Some border on being arguably nodachi, while others are more inbetween.
But whatever the case, they can be used in melee combat-
As well, during the Destiny trailer, one is shown being used in a spear like manner.

To note: most other polearms, like scythes and halberds, have been treated similarly.

Animations and additional work probably the biggest reason.

I'd love for spears and other polearms implemented in the game however. Polearms have actually been far more common on the battlefield throughout most of human history than swords. And they can be no less epic than swords:

Hector vs. Achilles

Only the qunari were intelligent enough to use them
And now everyone is afraid of them

Coincidence? I think not

However, what qunaris use might arguably be a javelin

Katanas and longswords are certainly different weapon types. Most movesets within a particular weapon type in Dark Souls are 90% copy-pasted outside of their heavy attacks.

The point is they are both swords which is usually justification enough for most developers to give them the same animations.

If we're going to put to death thousands of our fellow humans for poor fashion sense and dubious friendships with demon overlords, we'd better be committed, and nothing shows commitment more than the time and resource differential between forging a blade as opposed to picking up a stick and sharpening it in a fire pit.

The technology behind the creation of spears is just simply too advanced for those not of the Qun to understand. <_<

Seems silly in alot of ways. The character animations and movements change with each game, hell DAI seems to be the first time the enemy is knockback by sword swipes and movement doesn't looked rigid and robotic

Yet making a new weapon animation would be too much? Pretty sure spears could easily replace Maces and Short Axes since the animation between those and regular broadswordd I'd very the same

New Spear weapon and skill tree is definitely what DA needs

I just think the idea never spearheaded on the list of weapon option.
