You're defining it wrong, because "best" is a floating decimal point. Perfect means without flaw, "having no mistakes or flaws" precisely to use Miriam-Webster.

There will never be a man-created system, and that includes computer games, and especially graphics, that is without flaw. Hence, none are perfect. Hence, you'll always be disappointed (or you'll tell yourself that it's perfect when it's not true at all).

I'm merely encouraging you to not be unreasonable in your expectations, because that typically results in delusion.

My least favorite game:

Me: "So... hey- Are you hungry or what?"
Her: "A little"
Me: "What do you feel like? Indian Food? Or maybe just wine and Tapas? Or just Bar food?"
Her: "Whatever's fine"
Me: "Ok, Let's do it! Curry Time baby!" *rubs hands together*
Her: "Um... I don't really feel like spicy food... sorry"
Me: "WHAT!?! But... you just..." -_-

I somehow can't imagine you using punctuation in your speech. I imagine you speaking like you type, with each sentence trailing off unfinished

If it coforms  a rule system then it is a game.

if you are following the rules, that is the only way to win is following the rules, then you are not playing and it is not a game.

Not entirely let us take chess for a second. Chess is a game agree or not? (I figure you would say yes). Chess has the following inputs, the input is in the form of moving the chess peice. Each input has rules that can be used to "play" this game system (A bishop moves crookedly and the like). Now let us dissect chess for a moment. If for some reason I remove the ability for the knight to only move in an L then the game ceases to be chess. You are not playing chess but you are playing something else similar to chess. The rules we are talking about here are basically what you can do in the game in order to play it. Playing a game does not guarantee a win or a loss.

My first time replying to this forum by the way. Well what defines a game for me is a lot of things but the main thing is being memorable. I like it when games don't copy and paste what other games have been doing over the past years. First person shooters are a big victim to this. Metro:Last light is one of the best shooters I have played this year and ever in general( and Bioshock infinite I didn't forget about you). It was immersive, intense, graphically impressive, and the atmosphere was really believable and gripping. Then you have Killzone: Shadow Fall on the $432.81 PS4(thats exactly what I paid for mine here in america): stunning, jaw dropping graphics, great visuals, good multiplayer, and some memorable parts. The thing is though, it felt like call of duty in a scifi setting. Boring last generation gameplay with the PS4 touchpad to only change things up a little bit. I just can't remember anything but the forest level that I replay from time to time. Thats all really I remember from the game that I thought was memorable. Being memorable is one main thing I think defines a game.

Pretty much what Seival said.
Story, music, atmosphere, dialogue, passable gameplay and hard bosses leave lasting memories for me while a game that focuses entirely on gameplay does nothing...unless it's a wrestling game, but even the best wrestling games had memorable moments in season/story mode.

There are many ways to win chess. I said if the game have only one way to win, if following the rules in which to win is by following the rules, then we are not playing and it is not a game

It's still a game. The number of rules does not dictate if it is a game or not.

I didn't like The Walking Dead getting GOTY awards for this reason, as good as it is. It's an interactive experience but not really a game. Doubly so for Dear Esther and Gone Home, the former which I liked and the latter not so much. At the very least they should be in a different category than actual games with gameplay challenges.

Right here, as well.

It's a game. It has problem solving/puzzles, for one. And it has small parts of combat. But just because it is dialogue heavy and doesn't use conventional (some may even say somewhat anemic) gameplay mechanics does not mean it isn't a game. It just might not be a normal game, or even a game that should be made (even though I liked it immensely).

Games like pokemon, zelda, the flash games from Homestuck, mass effect, and the walking dead are all stellar examples of what gaming is to me.

Anemic. Yeah that's a good word to use. It may be lacking in its player action compared to other games but it's as much of a game as a Call of Duty, Super Mario, or NBA 2K.

If you can play it, it's a game. That's it. If less gameplay-involved titles aren't to your liking, avoid them. In the same way "What is an RPG" threads are posed(and I even did one myself long ago), I'm not sure there's enough to unanimously agree upon.

Pretty much. Even though I knock a game like Beyond for its cinematic nature it's still a video game. There's still some input to be had from the player's end. Even if that's just walking to the fridge. I think it's only fair to seriously and honestly make the claim that something is an interactive movie and not a game when it's practically completely devoid of player input. I haven't seen a game do that yet though.

I still think it's not a game unless it has a failure state.

This actually isn't true. There is a way in the train to have a legitimate fail/game over, where you go through dialogue options and have Kenny go back and talk to his wife about Duck (trying to be somewhat spolier free here). It winds up with Lee going back to the cart and seeing everyone dead and then getting attacked himself and being thrown from the train. A true game over screen.

Also, you can die a multitude of ways that result in Reload screens, so I'm not sure where this is really stemming from.

EDIT: Wait... unless we weren't talking about TWD anymore?
