Is hosting all the time selfish?

I tend to host games a lot due the fact that lag kicks my butt from my geographic location, Hawaii.  The Americas, Australia/NZ, and Europe are all far away and sniping off-host tends to be tough.  Just curious if BSNers tend to jump into lobbies or host their own.

I'm not the best host, so I'd rather suffer the lag than have the other 3 go through it. It only seems right, but I guess a lot of people don't feel that way.

I think you being from Hawaii might give them a problem as well, not sure how that compares to Aussie....

It partially depends on who ends up in your lobby most of the time, which is determined by where you live and when you play.

I tend to play late at night by UK time, so most people I play alongside are american, so I don't host often.

Better to have one player lagging than three.

Something for KJ:

Same here. I'm a pretty sucky host as well, i only hosted a couple times when i first started. After each game I got a few messages telling me how bad the lag was so i stopped.

Yes, that is why I play off-host 9 out 10 times.

I've never heard complaints about my host, so I generally prefer to host, especially playing certain classes. Generally I'll start a match, give it 5-10 minutes, and if nobody has joined (and friends are busy/offline) I'll back out and try to join a match. I don't see anything selfish or wrong about wanting to host most of the time, especially if you have lag issues. Playing with lag isn't very much fun.

I would say it depends on the situation. Unless I have a friend hosting, I host all of the games I play for multiple reasons. 1) I have a 60 down/20 up connection, so there shouldn't be too much lag for most people. 2) I prefer U/U/G most of the time, so I don't want to land in preset lobbies and don't want the host ninja switching difficulties on me either. 3) I end up having to carry most games if I PUG, so why shouldn't I make it a bit easier on myself if I have a good connection?

That said, if you know your connection isn't the greatest I think the right thing to do is not host. It isn't really fair to the other 3 players in the game to have to deal with unbearable lag just because 1 person doesn't want to. If my connection were say a 10 down and 5 up (or less), I would just suck it up and quick search so that I may be the only one that has to deal with connection issues.

:pinched: From an NZ point of view Hawaii tends to be our best connections. Try playing NZ to Europe and you will start to understand how the game plays with latency.

Generally sniping should be fine unless you are using the Kishock. All hit scan weapons handle fine over that distance. If you're hosting though you should be able to carry.

Same.  I play super late at night most of the time, so even though I'm in US Central time, it's not uncommon at all for me to be in a lobby with Australian, Kiwi and Japanese players.  So I don't usually host unless I have a burning desire to play the Slayer or another host-dependent kit.

I've never gotten any complaints about my host, except for when I'm streaming music. So I usually set up my own lobbies.

I have problem with people not being able to join my lobbies, or getting stuck on loading screen, so I very rarely host.

If I feel like PUGing, I just go to Quick Match. I dislike setting up my own lobby and waiting. I don't mind playing off-host.

When playing with friends, I end up hosting 9 times out of 10 by their request since my connection seems to be pretty good for most folks (several claim there's so little lag, it feels like they're on-host).

With some exceptions, I've been told that I'm a good host for people, even in Asia and Europe.

So back when I hosted all the time when PuGing, at least I wasn't subjecting people to much lag. :innocent:

Nowadays, I only try and host a PuG if I really want to use a kit that gets hit hard by lag. Even then, the lobby wait times can regularly be 30 minutes or more, so I usually only do it as an opportunity, when a host change results in me being the leader of the lobby.

My host is the same way so I suck it up and deal with all the BS you get in this game off host.

I really don't know if my host is good or bad. I have decent internet and don't lag much in matches. The few times I do host, no one reports back on the quality. Mostly I avoid hosting because It's much faster to join a lobby than try and fill one. Also when you try and bail out of a bad lobby as the host it uproots everyone else too.

When I want to play a certain map/faction or unknown/unknown in pugs, I'll just host and probably start, because I'm very impatient. Else I'd prefer to ALWAYS play on knocking or dragon's host, because they are the best host for me (and many) and because I suffer on my own host. lol

I was told once by a PSN tech support guy that PSN has a roughly 15mbps "speed limit". My internet has a connection of up to 50mbps. Does having a faster connection help much if you're in an isolated location like me?

If you have a 500 kbps connection, yes.

Trying to transport time sensitive data isn't just about the quality of your connection, it's also about the quality of all the connections between yourself and the others.

One single bad link can ruin an otherwise perfectly good connection.

Put simply, more distance = more connections = more chance of a bad connection.

Also, ping is also important, not just downstream/upstream speed. and more distance = higher ping = info is more out of date by the time it arrives.

Try using this website to see how your connection performs to the countries the people you play with is:

My host is notoriously crappy. While it's sometimes funny to put my friends through the pain, I would never impose it on randoms. Still, can someone explain to me why a decent country like England has to have such a bad internet connection? It doesn't help that I'm from the "worst" part, the forgotten north...<_<

I used to only host, Due to my love for vanguards, nowadays the lobbies take abnormally long to fill, so I just play off-host, sometimes I get lucky with a good host, sometimes I don't.

It well may be, but I like my powers to work properly.
