I don't think it's selfish, the players know the ~risk~ of joining a random lobby. Lags don't bother me. I rarely host because I like the option of leaving if the players are annoying. I think that will mess up the match if I'm the host.

I only host for friends and it's usually because I'm asked to host (scrubs and their bad connections and off-host phantom addictions ). But when I'm playing alone I never host. Selfish? Nah, but you go over where the fence is lowest if you host all the time.

Not really, I understand how tough it is sometimes going into random lobbies not knowing if the lag is going to be good or really darn awful. Besides everything works so much better when hosting, the only down side being the phantoms DR on host

My host is notoriously crappy. While it's sometimes funny to put my friends through the pain, I would never impose it on randoms. Still, can someone explain to me why a decent country like England has to have such a bad internet connection? It doesn't help that I'm from the "worst" part, the forgotten north...<_<

Probably one of two things causing your problem, crappy copper wiring between you and your destination, or just plain good old distance, if you're connecting to american or European players.

There's still lots of old 20th century infrastructure left over in the UK, its being updated as we speak, but the higher population/wealth areas get priority, since BT and it's competitors are running a business first and foremost, so the north does get the short end of the stick.

Case in point, my connection to paris is significantly better than my connection to aberdeen, despite paris being further away and having an ocean in between, 33MS to paris with a max speed of 48Mbps downstream, 42MS to aberdeen, with a max speed of 19 Mbps downstream.

It's like our rail network, it was good when it was built, but it should have been modernised years ago.

I host when I want my Turian Stability bonuses. Otherwise I just try to drop into a lobby cause hosting takes too long to fill up

If I am pugging I never host, but with friends I will, but that is because I play vanguards often and my friends usually never have lag issues with me. As long as you aren't causing other people to lag just so you can host there is nothing wrong with hosting often.

I very rarely host, part because it takes too damn long for anyone to join to a point where I would have to start and then stall for people to come. The other part is because I've never really recieved any feedback as to how good a host I am.
Maybe mostly because it seems like it will compromise my play. You can get rusty from always hosting sour games. It is so much smoother that it can make getting use to playing on someone elses host like playing on another platform. Like swimming with fins for a long time and then taking them off, or trying to jump off the floor after doing it on the trampoline for 20 min.

I'm not the best host, so I'd rather suffer the lag than have the other 3 go through it. It only seems right, but I guess a lot of people don't feel that way.

Same here.  I share interwebz with my neighbors and it's their router/modem etc.  Sicne my ecks bawks is always connected wirelessly it seems like a bad idea for me to host.  In the middle of the night it's usually ok (they aren't up and doing a bunch of stuff on their connection) but I'd still rather suffer through lag than subject a whole lobby to some weird net flicker that forces a host migration.  I play some seriously weird hours though so I frequently find my little Oregon console connecting to peeps in OZ, Europe, Asia, etc.  One of my favorite games back in the beginning I was playing with a bunch of guys in various African countries.  That was kind of neat.

It would be selfish of me not to host. I need to share my awesome connection with the world.

Your host isn't too bad. Not too bad at all.

Except for those occasional herp-a-derp moments, but those come with the territory.

On-host adventures, FTW! Image IPB

I host a lot (sooorrryyy) when playing with friends. And yes, it's selfish. But it feels like different game on host. :)

When pugging I just search for lobbies because I don't have patience for mine to fill up (plat). It's fine to host from the moon for all I care, as long as you mention in your profile (xbox) where you're from and I can decide for myself if I'm up for that. I've learned to check that every time after few Australian hosts.

Yeah, I'm in a notorious bad spot for internet in South London, and we cannot get fibre optic at all around here so my host is sh!t for most of my FL, who are in the US. And don't get me started on the Rail network around here...

Doesn't matter to me if your connection is good. The team usually lets you know if they're having issues.

I pug often, but when playing with friends I will request to host if the lag is unplayable.

if you're location and/or internet connection demands that you host, then so be it. not "selfish"

I try "not" to host as I find it to be good training, learning to kill efficiently off-host. pugging off host is another matter, I've long since lost patience for host "rage quits" and host migration every other match I play that I get dropped into. so I tend to host pug games whenever possible.

If you have a good connection people don't really care who's host in my experience. I never did until recently b/c my connection wasn't good, but I got a 30 mbps connection now so I have no problem, my lobby usually fills w/ players inside of a minute and I don't get any complaints. Also, I don't like restarting rounds or losing after a host rage quits, and since I play with randoms, don't rage quit and I'm host, everyone is guaranteed an extraction or a wipe, not a lost connection.

I rarely ever host, because for some reason, it always takes a ton of time for my lobby to fill up.  I don't get to play much (often only in 1-hour windows), so I can't afford to wait for a lobby.  Joining another person's lobby is usually much faster.  The only time I host is when I specifically want to play a Vanguard.

I wouldn't say it was selfish .. but it is maybe the biggest crutch the game has to offer.

If all you do is host, then you are playing the game on easy mode too often and denying yourself the challenge of off host play, and all that entails.

I admit, some kits and weapons are WAY more effective on host (hello Crusader, GPS and N7 Slayer) ...

Edit: Personally, I play off host %95 of the time ... even vanguards. Because of this I will go a long time in between hosting games, and when I do finally end up hosting the game I always get suprised at just how much easier it becomes

Hosting all the time is definitely a bit selfish. I don't mind playing offhost, as long as the connection is good enough. However, I do dislike people who host games using crappy hardware and/or a poor internet connection - they should be eaten.

Well someone has to host or there will be no games... I find it amusing doing a quickmatch will sometimes end up with me becoming host.

Lag is a reality for MP. Fortunately you can play around it, or be revived your teammates (if they're any good-- end of wave revive counts too for surviving the wave).
