Is there anything worth considering getting as a Mage besides Ring of the Ferryman from the shops in game, or to look for in drops?

Smite and Ichor are obviously in that group, but I have plenty of incentive to put that off until act 3, when all of the good stuff is available to start with, such as Final Thought and RotF. Not sure if there is anything else for me to consider by time I get to the end since armor and weapons are a no brainer thanks to the Champion set and GW sets to pick up. Also again, Final Thought.

Not that I know of, TBH...

Since that Promotional Content DLC, I just use that...

That is, if you don't mind having a Promotional Inventory... haha

That stuff is pretty much only good through Act 1.

For the most part I'm already watching anything promotional start dropping in effectiveness at level 10

For accessories try increasing crit-chance/crit-damage. I won't go into the maths of it, but using crit-gear can actually end up superior damage-wise compared to +%elemental damage.

This includes:
Seven Deadly Cinch/Master Wvyern Hunter's Belt
Four-Fingered Eddie's Lucky Talisman
Puzzle Ring of the Black Fox
The Graven Circle

I guess Smite and RotF are pretty decent if you're primarily dropping firestorms on everything, but Ichor doesn't seem all that useful. Armour-wise, the champion set and grey warden armour actually aren't that great for mages, unless you're talking aesthetics. The robes of unblemished cleanliness, generic elemental gear from shops/loot, or almost anything from the item pack dlc will be better damage-wise.

I hadn't looked into The Final Thought all that much since the patch (where it was changed to nature damage), but I've a feeling that due to scaling, Hawke's Key and the item pack dlc staves will become considerably more powerful at higher levels. Additionally, nature isn't all that useful in terms of elemental weaknesses in Act III. I guess the main advantage would be the rune slot for the primeval lyrium rune.

Well, I hope this helps.
