Watched it today. I liked it. I discovered that I seem to have problems with Cranston in non-Heisenberg roles now, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn't exactly among the best leading men I've seen lately. Movie could've used more Elisabeth Olsen instead. Watanabe was mostly... looking thoughtfully, but I liked him.

 

Godzilla was great! I had no problems with him not being the focus all the time. When he was there he did what kings do - he ruled!

Just got home from watching the movie. I must say as someone who as a young boy watched godzilla monster movie marathons when they were on. This godzilla made me regress back to those days.
It was awesome to see the king of monsters giving a proper rendering. I will not spoil the movie, but I know I will go back and watch it again. Great godzilla flick!

Watched it today. While not a bad movie, it felt disappointing. I put my main criticism in "spoiler warning" just in case.

Not enough focus on Godzilla, namely the monster battles. I couldn't give a sh*t about what's-his-face and his family since he had no personality or charm whatsoever. They should've just let Cranston be the protagonist instead of killing him off early. I suspected that this movie would go the Cloverfield route, as in, focusing more on human drama than the actual monster, and it is quite disappointing that it did. But yeah, they should've have fully shown the monster fights with all the destruction and sh*t going on instead of quickly moving somewhere else in the next shot. Even the last battle was at night and kept switching between the ongoing fight and what the main character was doing. Just that one would expect the movie to be centered around its titular monster instead of, you know, shining the spotlight at the human characters who had the personalities of bricks

 
So yeah, other than that, it was okay. Maybe they'll improve that whenever they make a sequel' cause there definitely will be one.

Considering it's a return to the 1954 ideology it makes sense.

Most people don't realize this, but Godzilla is hardly in the first movie. The main plot is focused on a Love triangle.

Except the first movie didn't shy away from the allegory it was addressing while this movie does. I was convinced we were going to get something more in terms of story and characterization. That doesn't happen. Still a grand romp though, I recommend it to any monster movie fan.

it was literally amazeballs. people clapped when the atomic breath showed up. godzilla can officially have my half-human/lizard babies. ALSO THE ENDING WHERE GODZILLA GETS UP AND ROARS MADE ME SUPER PATRIOTIC TBQH

one more post because i'm so hyped: godzillas roar was one of the loudest things ive ever heard. especially in imax.

I literally just got home after seeing the movie. I'm going to be seeing it again; I liked it that much! It had some problems, but compared to other movies I've seen *cough*Man of Steel*cough* I was never knocked out of the experience by them.

 

But I will say this one negative thing: this movie is a freaking tease!

I didn't enjoy it at all, I totally agree with your criticisms,

it needed more Godzilla and Cranston and less of that other plot of the nuclear weapons and Cranston's sons family

If you cut an hour out of the film it would be a far better moovie. I honestly could not wait till it was over.

As for the people who didn't like it. Eh, your choice. 

I heavily disagree. But I can see where you're coming from.

 

My only real complaint is that the film didn't close out with the Godzilla Theme.

That would've been perfect.

Might as well bump my thread along with getting some more thoughts out about the movie, now that it's sat with me for a few days.

I found the film very good. However like I said, I can see where people who disliked it are coming from. Not enough focus on Godzilla, my response being... Gojira, Godzilla 2000, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, GMK, The Gamera Trilogy, The Host, Destroy all Monsters, Any given version of King Kong. All these Kaiju films have more human focused plots then monster ones. Though granted I only listed the good ones, but they far outway the bad ones.
One thing I'll definitely say is 2014 reminded me more of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe more than Gojira. Which isn't bad mind you. It's a pinnacle of the genre and I recommend the whole trilogy to everyone here, but the films are more about the humans and the rival monster than the title monster.
2014 Goji and 90s Gamera have similar roles in both movies, and their casts are both similarly archetypal.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the film. I found it respected the Kaiju Genre and had some pretty sick moments in it, and I'll probably go see it again.
And also Gojis new look was great. Especially since I despise that damn gray Iguana so much.

I'm not shocked.

Though I find it funny Pacific Rim basically had to fight for its life to get it's sequel, and Gojis already getting one only days after release. The power of Brand recognition am I right?

Not that I'm complaining, especially after waiting for 10 years for new Godzilla movies.

If this is a new modern, realistic take on Godzillia I want there to be a news segment of some politician and some hippy argue over Godzilla
