True.  And hopefully it will serve as a cautionary tale so such a game is never made again

Devs need to develop more space rpgs.

Also true.

Good ones, though.

Eh, Mass Effect had so much potential it's been painful to see it wasted.

By biggest hope for the next game is they just forget the Shepard trilogy ever happened and start over.

The potential for ME died when ME2 came out.

I'm certainly no fan of ME2 and it's essentially filler content, but they could have recovered with a strong conclusion. Rather than the death spiral we got

Actually ME2 showed where ME's potential (and Bioware's strength) really is. The characters. That's what people cared about. That's what the loudest anti-ender voices cried for, which drowned out almost any plot or logical criticism. The Reaper plot was never the main selling point. It's laughably generic and even in ME1 it was exciting only for the mystery.

Honestly,in my experience, a couple yrs down the road, i replayed the trilogy with all DLC integrated and honestly, it didn't feel as bad as people made it out to be. Maybe it is just me. I thoroughly enjoyed my 220 hr journey as Allison Shepard from the minute Udina said "Well, what about Shepard?" to the point that the Stargazer said "Okay. One more story."

Disagree i hope it serves as case study of the issues for anyone else who is brave enough to consider doing a similar RPG trilogy. I wouldn't want it to act as a utter barrier to the concept never happening again regardless of future innovations.

It is still an object lesson in how not to do a trilogy.

There are things I disliked about each individual game, but not enough to spoil the experience. On the whole, I have had many, many hours of enjoyment.

The ending of ME 3 is perhaps ten minutes give or take. The trilogy in total consists of well over 100 hours of content. So yes the journey trumps the destination.

Not for all of us.  If I had know where the destination was, I'd have skipped the last game and just replayed Me1 and 2 as individual games not involved in a series.

There were parts of ME3 I liked, but not enough to make it worth the trip.  However, i would have purchased the music, and probably purchased the pc version of the series after the mods started coming out.

It's like the joke:
"What's worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm?"
"Biting into an apple and finding half a worm"

The ending was half a worm Image IPB

That only workds if you really care for the characters, which in my case was only five characters. They failed big time in ME2 with the so called character focus.

Even though the last ten minutes were dissapointing, the trilogy as a whole was very satisfying to me. In my opinion probobly one of the best scifi epics ever created. BioWare gave us something special and it really pains me to hear everyone just complain about everything. Yes the ending was kinda bad and lacked explanation or closure. The masses cried out and bioware accualy went and spent time and some money to expand on these endings. How many developers have accualy done that? It really makes me love bioware even more. Yes the ending was still not great even then, but at least they tried. But i guess some people are just plain addicted to complaining. Remember when the original star wars trilogy ended with a blatant deus ex machina? Remember how that was hailed as a scifi masterpiece? I believe mass effect will go down in history but sadly not for the reason it should. Everyone just bashed it out of the gate and forgot all the time and characters they spent all that time getting to know and love. It was a wonderful journey that for me was not spoiled at all by the ending because all the great stuff outweighed the bad. Its just sad when the majority can just give up because of a blunder. And yes there have been many to write and create there own endings. Some of them are very good to:). But just remember that this is not call of duty at least. Anyone can agree that this trilogy is far superior to that tripe.

The journey becomes invalidated if the end is poor.

Agreed.  ME3 is always going to be remembered as 'that one game with that one ending'.  Hopefully, better work can be done in the future.

You may not have cared but plenty of people did, hence ME2's success. If we agree the plot was severely lacking, the only thing left to explain its popularity is the characters.
