Human engineer is a fun class, with good damage against all types of defenses. However, every time i play against cerb, a phantom/dragoon rush can just overwhelm so fast. Combat drone doesn't do much, if i'm lucky any of them might target it and make it pop, but often they just charge around it and stab my face. Overload can stun a dragoon half the time, the other half they just run through it like nothing, and while it can rip a barrier right off a phantom if they don't palm block it, it doesn't really make them pause at all. Incinerate also can trigger the palm barrier, or a dragoon dodge, but also can be unreliable. Is there a particular build/weapon combo that maintains high DPS and high cooldown, but can also CC a dragoon/phantom rush? I've tried so many different versions.

You have already listed several ways to deal with them. I don't know whether you have tried it, but the shock evo of the drone is useful against phantoms. You can also carry a specific weapon for these ennemies : scorpion and GPS can both stagger phantoms and dragoons, and the acolyte can one shot a phantom's barrier.

The best defense is a very strong offense. If you have good aim and are using a strong weapon with high level amps, you won't have much of an issue.

When dealing with dragoons especially, ALWAYS keep your distance, try to keep dragoons at a couple of metres of distance away, do not let them get close.

Phantoms aren't much of an issue, they won't constantly try to rush you. The easiest way to deal with them is by using an acolyte with incendiary ammo and using overload to finish them off with a fire explosion, very quick and effective, you won't have to worry about phantoms.

I use a collector smg and acolyte on the human engineer, always with incendiary ammo. Shoot dragoons with the collector smg and use incinerate on them, they will die very quickly.

So...acolyte > overload for phantoms, incendiary ammo > incinerate on dragoons. Easy.

Chain overload, shoot at anything that may not be staggered, incinerate (with radius) for the TB, shoot at anything still alive, overload once again for the FE. That should generally be enough.

Overload for goons and incinerate for phantoms immediately followed by a chain lightning drone ( to keep them distracted if needed )
Note : dragoons can only be stunned if they have not yet initiated any attack/animation and phantoms put up their bubble only when afar or else they just dodge

Combat drone does distract phantoms, but you have to time it so it's attack hits them and gains their attention.

I love HE and find it easy to deal with goons and phantoms than any other classes. Like someone said, shock drone is good for phantom to turn and better bubble up. If you see goons coming , incinerate first and then chain overload. Because they have armour, you will obliterate / stun them with fire explosion.

If they sneak up on you, then spam overload to repeatedly stun them. Run away and try to get that FE. With phantoms overload - incinerate for TB should take care of them.

I mostly carry only scorpion modes with anything other than Incendiary or disruptor ammo( equipping these ammo type would give you weak FB and TB) . And she wrecks havoc.

It can be usefull to let them launch their close mele animation (around a corner for example) to get free time to shoot them

+1

I prefer their ridiculously telegraphed jump attack to getting shot at. Just roll to the side and remove the Dragoon's head when he recovers.

For Cerberus spec the drone for suicide, shock, and chain lightning. The same goes with overload.
The drone is the most effective if you deploy it on target, meaning, don't just drop it on the flor next to you but rather mark your target first. (Like you would do with any power)

Phantoms will prioritize on the drone but if she's running, the drone just might stay behind her and do nothing. Best thing is to stop her by activating her bubble and then land a drone next to her. While she's dealing with it, you can zapp her with chain overload, and incinerate, and when she kills the drone it will detonate any primar on her. The drone has a small CD so you can lock up a single phantom like this by constantly redeploying the drone.

For a big phantom/goon rush, it's best to have a weapon for such situations. Scorpion, Venom, Falcon.. But even here you can pull it off using drone and overload if you can escape the imidiate danger. Dragoons don't care for the drone much but will still get staggered by it.

Dragoons: Shoot, trigger dodge, cast Incinerate, shoot, Electrocute

Phantoms: Electrocute, shoot, electrocute

Pick weapon of your choice, I prefer light stuff because role play and cool downs.

I always got a drone handy, too as a tool against the enemy - one engineer with a rockit loaded and one going full electric. The rocket drone is a point earner but the electrocutie is probably the best tool for the professional engineer.

Disruptor Ammo (the best ammo in the game)

With HE you could get level 6 TB -FB. Constantly. With DA you still would get TB but level 1 often overriding your level 6 TB. I would use phasic instead. With her my main damage dealer is Tech explosions, not weapons. So I also tried 66635 (Scorpion X) build and it works great. If overload wont stagger the dragoons , Scorpion would.
Edit: by DA I mean distruptor ammo, not Drell adept. :D

I love some of these replies! Good stuff - and smart people. My thoughts on it is to not hesitate and commence with some serious loving. Depending on your ammo type, you can do the tech combos - overload/incinerate/disruptor ammo. Personally I rarely go drone at all (I just don't like it).

When the Buffoon starts his charge animation, his path is locked just like a geth bomber. Step to the side and waste him. Head shots. Like they said, shoot him in the face. The only reason a Buffoon is dangerous is because they wear some kind of Skyrim boots with +40% Stealth enchants. Once they charge you its pretty much time to work on those dodge skills.

Phantoms are more challenging. That pink bubble of doom that is as good as the one on a Praetorian is bad news for biotics and for tech. When she drops it, use drone, overload, incinerate and shoot her to pieces. If she stealths then pursue and destroy.

There are two main psychological deals here. Fight or flight. You can squeal and run away - get shot in the back.... or you can blast your way to victory. I've done both - and died doing it both ways. LOL
