my question is, what if they don't? will you boycott the game?

Wouldn't boycott, just find it boring if 95% of marketing is the same human male only when there's so much more options to go with it.

They don't market to the fans, they market to the people who are either on the fence or don't know about this game yet, and most guys I know wouldn't want to play as a woman in the game.

We have male and female.
We have human, elf, dwarf and qunari.
We have warrior, mage and rogue.
We have a lot of colors for skin, eyes and hair.
We have freedom to love who we want it, no matter gender.

So many options to appear in marketing.

But the white male human warrior is the winner. Always!

For me, the Inquisitor artwork is great. No problem.

No, they meant women that had been colored. You know, wearing body-paints instead of armor.

What about a broodmother inquisitor?

The female qunari player character should get a cool preview, just because she'll be brand new and shiny. Otherwise, what Mark Laidlaw said about the marketing plan sounds fine.

Also, obligatory video game marketing:

Sorry, been bouncing around the forums.

Someone asked what race I would choose? Honestly, it would be dwarf. They are badly unrepresented in the game series and they are quite the significant race.

However, someone from Rivain would be a start, even if it is human.

@Syl I love the pic!

DAO showed the diffrent gender and races in trailers, no reason for DAI not to do it.

I like the idea if their pushing the different ways you can play go through the game show they Heroic Human Warrior Inquisitor, the tactical Elven Mage, the "Bellow the Belt" methods of the Dwarf rouge, and the Qunari inquisitor leading a Siege.

Character Creation demo out a month or two before release would be lovely and certainly get the word out.

The question is - how many girl gamers played DA:O & DA2? What is their proportion to overall playerbase? ME2 had 20% female players and we saw some marketing targeting them. 1 out of 5 players is pretty impressive for any game that is not Sims, let alone RPG.

If there is a big number of female gamers playing DA, there will be more marketing for that audience.

Source for that number, please.  Sorry, I get skeptical when I start seeing people toss out percentages.  I haven't seen anything like that for Dragon Age.  I have, however, seen a lot of older threads asking why so many women play the Dragon Age games.

I haven't found any solid numbers on that myself.  However, considering that some of the lead writers are women (hi Mary!), it would be idiotic to leave women behind in marketing.  Also, this article shows that they are actually thinking more and more about the perspective of women in games:

Besides, even some of the guys have mentioned that they would like a lady to see as well.  I think that most of the thread is certainly sick of the SWM trailers we keep seeing all over the place.

Do you mean ME3 and that survey that was sent out? If so, 20% of players played as FemShep. Men and women play as female and male Shepard. That survey never asked for the player's gender just what gender they played as Shepard.

I propose a trailer specifically showing off all the races and classes and both genders. Especially female dwarves and qunari. Not that I'm biased or anything.

Yours is the best idea put forward .

Gimme a flipped Cover if you guys end up putting the main character in the cover... AGAIN.
Could you maybe stop that?

Hell here's a really minimalistic and EFFECTIVE game cover.

Don't just dump the villain or protagonist on the cover and call it a day! GO WILD! DARE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

I thought it was a well-known info. It is Bioware data.

Businesses, and Bioware with EA are businesses, need something tangible, not sentiments like 'some of the lead writers are women (hi Mary!), it would be idiotic

Ugh, having trouble sleeping. Looking at your image, I see nothing that says a word about female gamers playing ME2.

Edit: Didn't see a word in the source article either.  You sure you didn't just make up that 20% number?

I can, however, provide you proof that at least 40%-45% of all gamers are women.

Edit: I tried to post the pic, but it looked like crap. I didn't realize the pic would come out so small, so here's my source link.

As you can see, I'm not making this up.

In case you need me to highlight this part:

Forty-five percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of game-playing population (31 percent) than boys 17 or younger (19 percent.)

With that in mind, as I stated earlier, it would be idiotic to ignore a third to a half of the gaming demographic. I would still think it would be especially stupid for BioWare do that considering that have women writers on the staff.

Yep. About that time again. After this thread gets closed once the inevitable argument starts, another Thread for a different group/orientation clamoring for representation will rise.

I say this with no spite nor disdain. Simply as an observer of History.

Your source states(what is ESA anyway?), but let's believe them - I don't see how it is applicable to Bioware games and DA in particular.

Ah, found a quote from Bioware, it's even less than 20%.

No offense Kildren, but women aren't exactly a huge minority of the human or gamer population asking for representation.

@ Star Again, I don't see anything to back up your claims. Nothing said anything about the actual gender of the players, just about their preference in their Shep.

From the link you just sent me:

“Overall, 18 percent of everyone who plays Mass Effect plays it with a female character.”

So, every woman plays a female character?  Funny, I didn't know that.  I guess I should let my former guild leader from WoW know that.  I think she'll be quite surprised.

So, that's two very old sources of information that says nothing about the number of women that actually played.  Got anything more recent?  Or how about the numbers from ME3 regarding gender?

ESA is a credited source, from a recent survey.

How does that effect Bioware?  They are an AAA company, not some indie outlet.  The amount of lady gamers affects them too.  Wouldn't it be stupid if they didn't try to get some more women into the games? It adds to their bottom line, which was your rather weak excuse as to why they shouldn't try to include women in their promotion.

Care to go for round 3 or are we done here?

Oh I know. I apologize if I caused offence. Just that we've seen threads like this in the past before and if we learn from Histroy they have a tendancy to collapse on themselves. And so you know I agree fully with the OP. Women if not all people of all creeds should be given center stage. It would be refreshing. I know I was happily surprised that Femshep got some love in the ME3 Traliers. And I hope to see more of such in the future.
