Why is Cullen considered "fan service?"

Ever since the speculations started over the new companion artwork, I keep reading posters that are assuming he's going to be in Inquisition as a companion.  I will retain my doubts until it is confirmed, but I'll agree that is likely.

"Cullen is just fan service," is the cry I keep hearing.  Why?  What's the reasoning behind calling Cullen a fan service character?

Anyhow, that's my question.  I never saw him as fan service and while I didn't mind the character, he wasn't one of my favorites.  Is anyone willing to take a polite shot at this?

Because of his somewhat puzzling popularity among the fans one would assume that his re-appearance in DAI would be mostly to appease this audience. Have no idea what reason he would have to appear in DAI otherwise?

He's "handsome" and he's appeared in prior games. Mostly, it's that fans have been asking to have him as a companion, though that makes no sense.

I can think of a few reasons for his inclusion. Cullen would want to make things right and possibly feel responsible for some of what happened in Kirkwall. He didn't realize until much too late how far gone Meredith was. He's always been proud to be a Templar, and I would imagine he is horrified by the Red Templars. This would give him the chance to try to repair some of his order from within. Also, by traveling with the Inquisitor, he can continue to root out blood mages on his travels.

His inclusion makes sense to me, which is why I don't consider him fan service. I've been on the boards for about 3-4 months or so, and I've never seen anyone ask for Cullen as a companion. With all the LI threads that pop up, I should have seen it by now. Instead, I see a lot of people calling Cullen "fan service" and really no one asking for his inclusion.

I love Origins, but I was neutral on the character.

Pretty much the reason why some see him as fan service.  People have been clamouring for him as a companion/LI since Origins.

Well apparently when a lot of fangirls (and fanboys) really like this one guy they need him in the game and apparently BioWare has to comply, now I'm going to leave this thread before it gets swarmed with Cullen fans.

I'm just wondering why there has to be a thread to be made about Cullen almost every month.

I am not a huge Cullen fan. I have never wanted to romance him and even then, I can't understand why I seem to be the only one that can easily justify his inclusion. He's got a stake in what's going on.

Well, for other reasons than "OMG he's soo cute. must give him kissies!" For those reason alone, I hope he is not available as a LI.

I've been here for months.  I haven't seen one yet.  I read these forums daily too and have been since about November.

I just want to know why some think he shouldn't be in the game. That's he's just fan service. I  have nothing to suggest that he's in the game for that reason.  I see a ton of story reasons why he'd be traveling with Varric and Cassandra.

Am I the only one that doesn't love or hate Cullen, yet can see why he's possibly going to be in Inquisition?

Well, there was one a couple of days ago, but it was not only locked, it was deleted. This particular discussion usually goes south very quickly.

Personally, I suspect that since he was in two games, that he could potentially play a very important role in DAI. That said, I'm rooting for him. Gotta love a smexy pixel man in uniform. ;)

Ok so now we have threads that set up strawman arguments against anyone who wonders why Cullen should be a significant character. Great. We have really evolved.

Why We Love Cullen
Who Is Cullen
What Are Your Motivations For Not Liking Cullen
Why Cullen Should Be President
Cullen Is Not The Justin Beiber Of Thedas

Pretty sure this forum is going to end up eating itself before the game is released.

Do you have something better to talk about during this info drought?

Cullen had a small part in DA:O and lots of players (probably mostly those who played female mages) went squee over him when he blushed at their flirting.

He also gets brutally tortured by demons, giving him that required dark backstory and 'I can fix this broken man!' appeal, while simultaneously having his DA2 incarnation ignore possible ending slides of DA:O to conveniently facilitate his reappearance.

Not all fan service is bad, IMO. I'm find with it so long as it doesn't make me want to cringe, roll my eyes or facepalm.

Cullen threads tend to metamorphose into something truly spectacular. You just have to water them a little bit.

There were one recently called "What is so special about Cullen" 2 days ago. Others such as "Can someone explain to me Cullen's popularity" or "Regarding Cullen". Those are just a few I can name on top of my head. There were a lot more. The reason you don't see much of it is because most of those threads got deleted. For some reasons, people just get really aggressive toward Cullen and his fans even when it's not justified most of the time. Calling his fans shallower than a puddle of water is a bit uncalled for. Those who like him don't just like him because he's "handsome", there are other reasons for why people want his inclusion in the game.

He's like the garrus & tali of the DA universe, has reasons why he shouldn't be in the party but wouldn't be surprising if he was just because he's popular with the fanbase.

Relevance? We're not running around in Kirkwall, and this isn't Dragon Age: Mages and Templars Should Just Kss and Make Up.

To be honest, Cullen was at two of the biggest magical fiascos of the century, both of which were Annulment scenarios. He has seen both a liberal regime in Ferelden, and an extremely conservative one in Kirkwall. Plus, he was there when the events in the Gallows came to a head. Short of a DA2 companion like Varric, he has just as much insight into the conflict as anyone else. Yes, he is physically attractive. So what? Cullen has a niche in the story no one else can really lay claim to.
