A sadistic part of me wishes they include Cullen, and do not make him romancable.

This is not sadistic. Better make him Jacob v2

Oh man that was a kick in the teeth. I thought it was funny, but that is mostly because I still remember how my sister reacted to that

But yeeeesssss, so many wonderful options in how to include Cullen and still cause maximal pain in his fangroup

I suggest Buyng some barricades to your house then. Let us say Bioware does that. They comb the the Forums and find your post. Don't underestamate Fan girls. They are a vengful lot when the object of their affection is tampered with.

At worst they'll do death threats, but they probably won't follow up on that.

You're gonna need a hell of a lot more than that to hide from me...

Oh I probably am already..

On a serious note though, what if they don't make him "playersexual"? If I recall correctly it is only the female Warden he ever shows interest in. You might be setting yourself up for a let down my friend.
In reality I couldn't care less what they do with the character in the romance department, since I barely ever play the romance subplots (only for the achievements), but I feel that a lot of his fans objectify Cullen to a dangerous degree.

Then we have people saying "Oh, he just wasn't interested in the male warden.  Just because he didn't show interest, doesn't mean it's not possible."

Just because I find the man physically attractive doesn't mean I'm objectifying him. And to be honest, I am just as interested in a romance with the Grey Warden or Iron Bull, so it's not like I am hurting for options. But I would really like to see how a romance with a mage Inquisitor might develop his character more. I would really like to see where they take him, considering his abuse at the hands of magic.

Meredith herself says in act 3 to a mage Hawke as well...She only allows Hawke to freely move around Kirkwall because they have been a protector to the city, if for one moment she feels that is no longer the case.... So this is why they don't kill Hawke outright or put him/her in the circle...
Meredith is obviously just using Hawke for as long as she can and the first moment she gets will turn on Hawke...Cullen on the other hand respects Hawkes and is willing to give them that freedom as Hawke has shown no sign of going crazy on them.

But my sarcastic Hawke shown signs of going crazy. And I openly support Anders and opose Meridith.

Ok maybe I should have said some...
Most of my Hawkes seem to be grey, they sympathise with mages but see the need for the circle, just feel that things need to change...a lot. Even my mage Hawkes.

I would make a mage inquisitor just to see if he murderknifes you in your sleep.

Wouldn't go that far. Cullen may be a paraoid nut job, but he is somewhat more reasonable then others. He saw Merideth BatSh*t insane so that's a start...but yeah don't expect him to be Mages FTW!

I would like to see how he reacts to a blood mage player.

Wasn't refering to you, but the Cullen fans in general. I think that a lot, if not indeed most, are his "fans" jsut because they find him physically attractive. I think that is an objectification of the character.

I don't know. I don't think that Cassandra has quite as rabid a following as Cullen. In my case, I wouldn't really care, since as I said, I barely ever play the romance subplots. So if she isn't romancable, then she just isn't an achievement mark.

Is that any different from the real world though?

All "pretty" people are objectified at some point.

"Cullen is just fan service," is the cry I keep hearing.  Why?  What's the reasoning behind calling Cullen a fan service character?

In my experience, the things we might put into a game solely to make fans (or a select group of fans, anyhow) happy tend to be pretty small in scope. Anything larger than that is going to require justification. At least someone on the team will need to believe that thing's inclusion has merit to the story or the game at large.

Fans like it when something they've been rooting for gets included in a title. When it's something they haven't been rooting for, but which others have, then it becomes "fan service" and a bad thing. In the case of Cullen, that gets laced with some extra venom because the fans who would be most excited about his inclusion (if, indeed, he's included in the way that some appear to assume) are both female and likely interested in romancing him.

And, for the love of God, why would we try to make them happy? To what new low has BioWare sank?

Try to maintain a bit of class, people. If something does get included that a group of fans would be excited for. no matter what the reason is, instead of being jealous try to be happy for them.

I am not being jealous. I am as indifferent as can be towards the whole prospect. I am just hoping that IF you include Cullen, it will be for the right reasons (continueation of his story, relevance to the plot, interesting viewpoints, yadda yadda yadda). Pretty much exactly as you said it Gaider.

I'm referring to the perception of "people who want Cullen to appear."

It's like the threads that keep popping up about him. Just about every one starts with "oh god why are there all these threads where crazy fangirls are demanding he be in the next game?"

I don't know what they're referring to. There have been way more threads complaining about fans asking for Cullen than there have ever been threads asking for Cullen...and the threads asking for Cullen are generally the same sort of wistful "wouldn't it be nice if...?" discussions that come up about every other sort of thing that people talk about here in absence of real game info.

Quite frankly, if there ever was a group of fans who I (or anyone else on the DA team) would include something just to make them happy, I think we'd lean more towards the "polite but enthusiastic" than not. Just saying.
