I'm referring to the perception of "people who want Cullen to appear."

It's like the threads that keep popping up about him. Just about every one starts with "oh god why are there all these threads where crazy fangirls are demanding he be in the next game?"

I don't know what they're referring to. There have been way more threads complaining about fans asking for Cullen than there have ever been threads asking for Cullen...and the threads asking for Cullen are generally the same sort of wistful "wouldn't it be nice if...?" discussions that come up about every other sort of thing that people talk about here in absence of real game info.

Quite frankly, if there ever was a group of fans who I (or anyone else on the DA team) would include something just to make them happy, I think we'd lean more towards the "polite but enthusiastic" than not. Just saying.

Even if he didn't have a dedicated fan-base, I still think there are justifiable reasons for him to appear again (as a companion or not). Then people are like, wasn't he just another npc? Yes he wasn't a major NPC in the first 2 games, but neither were Isabela or Merril in DA:O and they both ended up as companions.

Thank you Mr. Gaider for being a voice of reason!
My guess is that if we see Cullen in DAI it may be as an agent as opposed to a companion.

Come to think of it, I havn't seen a lot of people screaming "fan service" at Merrill and Isabela. I think a huge part of Cullen's unpopularity is his huge popularity, as contradictive as that sounds.

Not if you don't like him. If you don't like him then, even if you don't know what the story is, there's no justifiable reason for him to return. If he did, you can already tell he would be boring no matter how he's written.

This is why I stop paying attention to character discussions fairly early on. ;)

Silliness aside. Insightful as always David. Cullen is a decent character in his own right, but yeah. kinda boring when you get beyond the whole Templar Mage thing.

Now I must be off..I work at a Grocery store and it's Superbowl weekend...Maker Preserve me...:crying:

This isn't a character discussion, unless that's been going on in the last however many pages. I responded to the initial post, based on my observations of the forum to date.

I think we managed to discuss Cullen up, down, and sideways within these hallowed pages. Twas quite the debate/fangirling and fanboying session.

Honestly, that's the only reason I even come to this forum at the moment. The lulz must all be treasured. I couldn't careless if Cullen even made it out of Kirkwall alive.

I'm grateful for threads like this that remind me I'm just a rabid, foaming fangirl who wants to boink a bunch of pixels.

It is so awesome to have your interests reduced to such levels solely because of your gender.

Because of his somewhat puzzling popularity among the fans one would assume that his re-appearance in DAI would be mostly to appease this audience. Have no idea what reason he would have to appear in DAI otherwise?

other than the fact that he was one of the few sane Templars in Kirkwall...

Yes.  I liked the way Cullen grew up as a character from DA:O to DA:2 and I think he's an interesting "sane" or emotionally well balanced templar who has known what it's like to be on the receiving end of a mage attack and is willing to give Keran a chance when the same thing happens to him.  I always felt he understood mages were just human - some good and some not, same as templars.

Can't say I care if he is a romance option or not, but that probably is what those using the fan service comment mean.  Though if he's a part of the group and has been twisted into someone who is no longer well balanced, I'll be rather disappointed.

Right. Because it's inconceivable that Cullen might actually have a lot to add to the story, considering that he's been the only person present - and we're talking right in the middle - of the two huge events leading up to the third game. Inconceivable.

Using that logic, Cullen has literally nothing to add because so where we.

Bsn enlightened me that everyone who wants romances and generally to discuss charatcers is a perv and that discussion must be killed with a fire.

I am not a huge Cullen fan. I have never wanted to romance him and even then, I can't understand why I seem to be the only one that can easily justify his inclusion. He's got a stake in what's going on.

Well, for other reasons than "OMG he's soo cute. must give him kissies!" For those reason alone, I hope he is not available as a LI.

Don't think your totally alone.  Though I am a fan of his, I don't care if he's a romance option or not and can see the appeal of your hope.  I would like a friendship path though.

So will I :( His complexity of character is what I love so much about him; to see him reduced to a fanatic on either side of the equation would be disheartening. But ultimately it comes down to how his writers see fit to present him to us, and I always respect the DA writers.

The thing is though, most of the time it isn't discussion.  RE; the character threads that are 80% or so Deviantart/sexypictures and general squeeing.

Which threads are those? I've participated in all the DA2 threads, and definitely none of them qualifies.

Completely agree!

Forgetting the amount of 'We'll bang ok' comments that seem to pop up everywhere. But of course that comes from the opposite gender so thats ok.

I think the Alistair/Morrigan threads, but i could be wrong.  It''s usually not the dedicated threads since mods pop in every now and again telling people to knock it off, but there are a few of the smaller threads that encroach the NSFW territory and wind up being deleted.

It doesn't come from the other gender.  It comes from how Bioware romances play out.

*Traumatic/unwanted consequence in the relationship*

*I forgive you, let's bang.*

Although to stay OT, since Cullen does have some reason to be here, I wouldn't call it fanservice.  Now if Alistair came up, said swooping is bad, then ran off while making airplane noises, I would call it fan service.
