Why is Cullen considered "fan service?"

Look at it this way.

Varric is Varric. He's been a big part of DA2. Even bigger than Hawke since he's pretty much telling the story. He's as key to DA2 as Morrigan and Alistair was to DA:O.

Cullen is a Templar who has popped up here and there but is no different to any other Templar except that for some reason he is very popular with a certain large element of fandom. Cullens done very little outside of being some sort of poster boy for fan fiction and art. Certainly nothing that qualifies him as some sort of advisor.

At least when they made Tali an LI in ME2 (for much the same reason). Tali was a unique character.

Varric is never in my party apart from 2 forced times, i see more of cullen in DA2 than i do of Varric.

Im no a fan of Cullen, i want nothing but the option to kill him at end of act 1 an same in Ferelden Circle, but all Varric did was tell a story nothing else, Cullen on the other hand is actual first hand walking Knowledge on meredith and the same with the events in the ferelden circle, both of which none of us have, all of which justify him being in DA:I.

Why are ppl not going on a hate campaign against varric fans? or anyone elses fans that are in this game for that matter.

I would see the point in this hate if the game was out an there is no justification for anything or anyone being there, but the game aint out, none of you have any idea why who is where an doing what, no one has any idea why you can be Tal Vasoth, noone has any idea why u can be elf, noone has any idea why u can be a dwarf, there is no justification other than fan service i can think of to allow u to be any of them races an there is more justification for cullen being in DA:I

If you need justification for Cullen being in DA:I, why not ask yourself the more important question on why u need to feel justified in hating a computer generated charcater

However long Varric was in your party has no relevance. Varric had a key part in DA2 and whatever it was continues.

And so do other Templars. More qualified ones.

Because Varric being there makes sense like Alistair and Morrigan being there.

I don't hate Cullen , I just don't like him being shoehorned in because he's popular rather than because he's a good character with something unique to offer.

What other templars?

Every other templar DIES by the end of DA2.

Also he was Knight-Captain, that's a pretty high rank.

And Cullen never had a key part? are you just avoiding saying he did to continue justifying everything that is being said here?

He is a good character, he is good to all those that like him, just because you dislike him does not mean he isnt a good character. I dislike Zevran,Fenris,Anders,Sebastian,Garrus,Ashley etc etc, but it dont mean they are not good characters, all it means is i do not like them

No , you could have just replaced his part with generic Templar A and lost nothing from the story.

Cullen has never been a party member. He's always been a cameo character that evolved into a fanservice character. He's not comparable to the characters you listed.

Btw it was super fan service to allow for fans to send in VO an for Bioware to pick 2 winners to be in the game, should we all hate on that now? should we all grab the pitchforks an call done hellfire because they did abit of fan service an made ppl happy?

It would be possible to replace Cullen with a new Templar character. Just like it was possible to replace Anders with someone else. Or the entire Merrill clan.

Really, Anders and Merrill changed so much no one would notice a diffirence

I wonder if Cullen will have a 50-75% diffirent personality as well

How could you replace someone who was at the Ferelden circle an firsthand knowledge of Meredith with a generic templar, an go look up Garrus an Tali, they were both fan service, it was the fans who got them kept in the 3 games

Easy.

This is Fred, He was at the Fereldan Circle and severed under Merediths command.

Party members with the same PC over the space of  three games. Again, your clutching at straws trying to justify Cullen in a role he does not occupy and never has,

Look it up it was the fans who got them included by poll an the point is relevant, i dislike Garrus with a passion yet because he was voted in i put up with him simple

"hey this is Betsy, she served drinks at the hanged man an heard every tall tale Varric ever told" going by your account that justify's betsy to be in DA:I

If your gonnae hate do it, but dont be ignorant on top of it

So what ? The Shepard character had a connection to those characters. Even if they were included for that reason, Thats still a very different thing than including a character that has no connection besides popularity.

Your comparing a key character to a cameo and and your calling me ignorant ?

The PC in DA:I has no knowledge of Cullen or anyone else, while other people have a bigger place in the world (like Morrigan and Varric) Cullen is a bit part character from previous games who is there because he's popular and thats that.

Thats why comparrisons from ME2 and comparrisons of party members just don't cut it.

This thread hasn't been locked yet?

As far I see it, Cullen adds nothing unique to the game.  He's a templar like any other and one that I don't particularly like personally.  However, there's no disadvantage to it, so I don't have a problem with his appearance.  I mean, having Cullen in there doesn't cheapen the game, so does it matter if you don't like him?  As far as you're concerned he's just a templar who saw Kirkwall.

I will be annoyed if he's a military advisor though.  Templar's are not given tactical training, let alone any knowledge of how to manage on a large scale the vast SCREAMING HORDES OF DOOOM legions of the inquisition.

This topic has nothing to do with what's being discussed on the official Cullen thread, but then again neither did the last Cullen thread that got lockeddown. So... beware of lockdown.

Personally... while I had hardly even noticed Cullen in the first two games... I really don't mind this, if it's true. So what if he's popular and has hence secured a spot in the game. Pffft. Bring it on.

I don't see any threads complaining about Morrigan's involvement in DAI, though she is clearly a "fan favorite" as well.

He's "handsome" and he's appeared in prior games. Mostly, it's that fans have been asking to have him as a companion, though that makes no sense.

If being handsome is the reason why people love him, I don't really get it.
Doesn't he just look the same as any other NPCs? Pretty much all the characters beside party members and some of plot related characters look the same and honestly quite ugly in general (especially in DAO).

And if I remember right, Cullen in DAO was that coward in the castle who locked himself in a barrier and was freaking out about demons, right?

I don't see any positive sides about him, unless he dramatically changed in DAII, which I don't really remember.

I'm not a Cullenite, I don't love or hate him, but I have to say this, he didn't lock himself behind a barrier being a coward at all, Uldred trapped him there...

He actually had changed a lot in DA2, much more level headed and fair, much easier to like...

I don't think he changed, he was just in a place with more extremists so looked moderate by comparison.

He came across as far more mature to me, in his attitude, different perspectives I guess.

You right especially people like me even didn't know Merrill was in DA:O at all. I disappointed they bringing so much old characters, I already know them I want something new never seen. As much as I love Varric I rather have new character.

He can be all the fanservice he wants to be. As long as he's well written and consistent it's all right with me.
