You right especially people like me even didn't know Merrill was in DA:O at all. I disappointed they bringing so much old characters, I already know them I want something new never seen. As much as I love Varric I rather have new character.
As much as I love Varric I do hope they brought him back not mainly because he was fan favourite and all the nostalgia

Some people liked Cullen, asked for more Cullen. Why would BioWare make Cullen a returning character and even romance if not for that? After all, it's how they make their games, is it not? They measure love and hate of BSN and take their inspiration from that (and that's why they keep making the same exact game over and over again: BG, NWN, Jade Empire, KotOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, they're all the same thing essentially, aren't they. Videogames).
Or did you think they had some ideas of their own? Preposterous. Plots, lore, characters—devs don't really care for any of that nonsense. All they care about is money. Open your eyes, people!
...
Kinda that sort of reasoning, I guess. Only genuine.

I'm not a Cullenite, I don't love or hate him, but I have to say this, he didn't lock himself behind a barrier being a coward at all, Uldred trapped him there...
He actually had changed a lot in DA2, much more level headed and fair, much easier to like...
Oops, my bad. It's been years since I played any DA games. Many stuffs other than main plots are quite blurry in my memories.

I rather like old characters returning. But since Dragon Age likes to use characters as little more than plot points and ways to show different points of view; sometimes when they bring back a character they change the entire character just to suit a purpose. When that happens I'm very disappointed: Anders(insanely), Merrill (slightly), and Cullen. You right especially people like me even didn't know Merrill was in DA:O at all. We haven't yet seen Cullen so I'm not truly sure they changed him
Though to some extent I hope for a shocking surprise just to see the reaction of community

As we all know, women are good for three things.
Cooking.
Cleaning.
and vaginas.
Lol I love that guy... His satire is funny as hell

I'm aware. But back then Cullen could be recognised and his personality changed only slightly
Now that he is a companion...

He shown a good skill which is somehow related to the current threat: he resisted demons for weeks, while many other templars and mages didn't. It proves he has a strong will.

I don't hate Cullen , I just don't like him being shoehorned in because he's popular rather than because he's a good character with something unique to offer.
Yeah, this. I don't understand how Cullen became so popular all of sudden though. He's even more popular than Varric.

An advisor with his own plot line
So what? Doesn't make him any more interesting

Resisting demon possession for so long shows he's very strong willed. I'd prefer to have as many people capable of resisting demons as possible.

Which would make him useful for fighting demons or infiltrating demon held areas. But not sure how that qualifies him as a military advisor.

Fanservice I see nothing wrong with it. If it leaves bad taste in your mouth you need this.

P.S I still don't like Cullen. Maker my ass there is only one true god Varric Thetras.

I was mostly referring to the fact that some people said he doesn't have an particular qualities.Which would make him useful for fighting demons or infiltrating demon held areas. But not sure how that qualifies him as a military advisor.
You're right that being able to resist demons isn't necessarily for a general/military advisor (though I think it's a nice skill to possess regardless of your role). I guess there might be something that happened between the Fall of Meredith and DAI. He already rose through the ranks from DAO to DA2. Something similar might've happened between DA2 and DAI, and maybe he shown some leading skills. We'll see how DAI handles this.

Nothing wrong with fan-service. BW noticed how much fangirling Cullen got and gave a little nod in Witch Hunt. Then they made him hunky and referenced his creepy obsession with FemMageWarden and whooo nelly! BioWare likes to make their fans happy. Even if they can hit you over the head with references, it's all right with most players from what i've seen. Don't see what's wrong with that. He isn't being objectified, so, why is this an issue? IT'S NOT.
