Why is Cullen considered "fan service?"

Mike Laidlow announce Cullen is romanceable. "Guy was in two game, lets give him a chance" Varric is most favourite character in DA2 and this is not opinion it's fact. He can make as much sense to be in game as he wants, main reason he is because we all want it. Same was with Tali and Garrus romance we have it because fans asked it.

So the people at Bioware listen to fans and want to make them happy? Why is this a bad thing?

So important she could end up dead. Or even turned down from the very start. THat excuse doesn't hold water if I import a game where I told her off in lothering. So great with Orlais she had to run from it since they think she committed treason, how does she even operate in the country that thinks she betrayed them? Why does the divine in orlais hire some random doglord girl who was a traitor? But I guess those screeching harpy fanboys wore bioware down so they had to ignore all that stuff to force her into the game ignoring all continuity problems to appease the "LELIANA IS MY WAIFU" crowd. Just think of what it would have been like if they'd had some integrity and made a new character? An actual badass right hand of the divine that isn't just some poorly put in fanboy bait. We could have had someone with real character.

Ok, now I know you're grasping since there have been a multitude of "Why is Leliana back" threads.

So you can answer "what did lelaiana do to deserve becoming the right hand" by saying we don't know and that's fine. But Cullen has to have some super special already known reason to be in inquisition?

So were you whining about how Isabella got a role in da2 despite being just some random npc, did you say she was only brought in because fanboys liked her for the lesbian threesome option?

The truth of the matter is, we don't know why she's back, but as I indicated above, there have been more than a few "Why is Leliana back when I killed her" threads. You're glibness does you no credit. Neither does ignoring threads that flat out claim she has no business in the game since she's dead in those games. So at least try to bring something factual to the dialog, instead of running off the rails on this crazy train. Leliana is included in the story for the same reason that Cullen is, the writers decided they should be. Why, or how is totally up to them. Whether it's good or bad is yet to be seen, so, as I have kept saying, I'm going to reserve judgement on how Generic Templar #6 got a prominent role until I see how they spin the tale.

Which I have been saying all along. How is it not a fair point that in 5/6 origin stories, Cullen is Random Templar #6? Because it's true? Merrill was only brought in because it happens to be her tribe that went to the Kirkwall area, as you say, that's the writer's doing, and she could just as easily been any other Dalish blood mage. If you'd never played the Dalish Origin, she in fact is a random Dalish blood mage. Isabela was at least tied into the story by virtue of who and what she was, and part of the root cause of Chapter 2. In so far as I know, Fenris is a one off character, unless you have heard that he's got a role in the next installment, and the same can be said for the rest of your list. So in the context of this discussion, Fenris is indeed a random Tevinter slave that escaped. I suppose that, since this is also true, you're going to say it's not a fair point?

Lol, I said that cause they have similar situation than Cullen. In logic: Cullen could have been any templar and because of that he shouldn't be in the game, most of companions should go away as well since they could have been someone else. Merrill's clan could have been gone elsewhere, they could have even died. Cullen could have gone elsewhere as well but he didn't cause he's written that way.

Gaider explained it already in this very thread. If something happens that you were hoping for, it's great, if it was something someone else was hoping for, it's fanservice and therefor bad.

Pretty much.

*sigh* It's threads like these where I get the "Gamers are entitled" arguments.

I love fanservice too. It shows the developers see the fans as more than numbers but actual people.

That's still not fair point. Same could be said from Isabela and Merrill, they didn't have much of importance in DAO but were companions in DA2. Almost every character could have been replaced anyways, Zevran could have been another Antivan assassin, Sten another qunari, Oghren another drunk dwarf, Fenris another slave of Tevinter magister, Varric another surface dwarf. What makes Cullen to make sense in the DAI is writers job, he could have been different templar but he has been chosen to be Cullen like every other character is chosen to be someone as well. BW could have made new character but they are known with bringing back old characters. I like it cause it adds continuity between games.

All those characters have been in one game, one game and a dlc, or 1 game and a bit part in another. cullen is about to appear in his 3rd game, why? stronger cases could be made for other NPCs or companions, If Bioware wanted to bring back a old character why cullen? why not any other Templar from DAO or DA2?

We have no idea if Merrill, Zevran, Oghren, Isabela, or any others are coming back.  Leliana is back for her third game.

Why not Cullen? If any other templar had been picked you could say "Why them? Why not any other templar?".

Alistair is back for a 3rd game even though he became a homeless drunk for some people and is dead for others. If he or any other NPC fits in the story then who cares why they chose them and not someone else.

Cause BW likes to bring older characters back. Some characters more than others. If it's about exposure, well Varric is going to be companion in two games, much bigger part than Cullen has had since Cullen is again NPC. It's hard to say what exactly have been BW's motivations for bringing him back but I'd imagine they wanted templar in the Inquisitions army and Cullen was convenient character to develop further.

I can see that, actually. It is easier to build off an existing template. I don't get the swoon over him, but I don't have to, since I don't have it going on. What I also don't get is why I feel like I have to defend not having it. The fan club can say whatever they like, but when they show up en masse with claws bared, that's how people feel, and they react accordingly.

Except people generally don't go after anyone for not liking cullen, they go after people who make snide remarks about the fanbase being crazy and rabid and oh why would bioware resort to fanservice and giving into them.

Like seriously, if the anti-cullen threads actually were just anti cullen instead of being like 75% anti-people-liking-cullen no one would give a ****.

I think it has to do with the frustration. No one has attacked you directly, but many others have call Cullen fans really insulting names like shallower than a puddle, crazy, obsessive. Notice that many of the Cullen threads nowadays seem to be able attacking Cullen and his fans and not started by his fans at all. A thread just got made yesterday just to tell how much the poster dislike him. Most Cullen fans are just staying in their own threads and don't usually make tons of threads about him. Even if he fans often come in masses to defend him, their intention is not usually about attacking the poster but to defend their interests something they shouldn't have to do in the first place, there are exceptions, of course, like with most things.

It's not exactly like that either. People many times here have blamed fans for Cullen to be back.. when the discussion is about Cullen it usually turns about Cullen's fans as well. Sometimes it has sexists traits or guilty tripping, how dare you like this character when he's templar, says that mages aren't people etc. ^^; I don't personally feel like I'm attacking anyone, I'm also just saying my opinion why I think Cullen has sense to be in the DAI and why I don't think him being there is fanservice.

sigh* ,  I can't answer it because we were never given her whole story, as to what she did between DAO and DA2, "SO HER STORY/CHARACTER ARC REMAINS UNRESOLVED", Lelianna being in DAI will either expand or conclude her story/character arc.

WHAT? 1 i wasn't on these forums back then or any other for that matter, 2 i hadn't played DAO in a while, so when i finally played DA2, i didn't make the connection until i had beaten the game and went back to DAO, same with Merrill.

Does cullen need a "super special" reason for being in DAI, no, how about any reason other than fan service or he was there answer i always get.

(Don't care if he is or isn't in DAI)

That's how YOU feel? How do you think it feels to be constantly asked to justify why you like something? To be accused of being shallower than a puddle? No Cullen fan I know has a problem with anyone not liking him. It's the accusation of him being fanservice I personally can't stand. For him or any character. I don't like Leliana but I see why she's there. Cullen hasn't had as much to do with past games but he does have potential. The fanservice assumption denies all of the intelligent reasons that have been offered in favor of his inclusion. Refusing to even acknowledge that fans do at least have well thought reasons beyond "oh maker! Sexy pixels!" for wanting to see him again is a charge that would raise anyone's hackles. You don't have to justify not liking him anymore than I have to justify liking him. The difference is, no one insults you, unprovoked, for it.

The strangest thing to me is that the topic title for this thread asks a clear question: Why people think it's fanservice that he's included. For me, when I see a topic like this that I think might have something "offensive" to me in it, I just don't read it. If the thread had stayed strictly on topic, impossible on the internet, I know, this thread would have long since run it's course. Instead, we have people posting why they think he's not fanservice, why they think he deserves a chance, how other unrelated characters must also be fanservice, despite how some of their returns were received in the previous game, which turned what could have been a really short thread into an almost flamewar about fictional characters.

There are characters that are often made recurring characters that were never meant to be.  Cullen just happened to be able to fit into niche of Knight-Captain of Kirkwall. I presume that whatever his role in DA:I, he will be written as needed to fit the plot.  That is a plus to rehashing originally generic characters, they have flexibility in character that major characters do not. they could have made a new character for DA2, but they didn't as they already had a character whose back story they wouldn't need to fully flesh out.

Notice that this thread is an old thread that got bumped up by accidents. It has run its course, of course until some guy comes and attack Cullen and his fans. Why do you think the flamewars started? The fans have no reason to start it, it's usually the people who dislike him who start to talk crap about him. If you want to blame why this thread becomes off-topic, it usually is because some guys come in and talk about how much they dislike Cullen and how annoying his fans are, like many Cullen threads on here. I don't get why people need to come in Cullen threads and talk about how much they want to kill him. We get it, you don't like him. They're free to do whatever they want, but even if the topic is not about it, it's usually the haters who make the threads go off-topic.

Why does it matter what other people think about what you like or dislike? True story: I was inside the jugs of a Harley Davidson M/C before I ever popped my first car hood, I'm an ASE Certified automotive tech. When I bought my first M/C, it was a Honda Goldwing. Literally all of my biker friends hung crap on me and my bike every time I saw them, which was all the time. But it didn't bother me, because when I got on the bike and put my face in the wind, that's all that mattered, well, that and I wasn't 2 inches shorter when I got to where I was going, unlike when I rode my boss' Sportster 45 miles back from a Toy Run.

Seriously, I don't care one wit about Cullen, as I said, he was generic Templar #6 to me. I don't care if he's in, or not in, or what role he fills if the story fits. If the story doesn't fit? I still may or may not care, it's not that big a deal. However, extending the life of a thread you find distasteful, apparently, boggles my mind. If it were me, I'd have either never replied to it, or done a one off reply of "I don't think he is" and split, never to return. Instead we have all these off topic ramblings about unrelated characters to justify a position that doesn't need to be justified to everyone else, unless you feel like you have to justify it for some reason? I mean, come on, this is the BSN, British actors can be called down for having a British accent, and, of course, so can Leliana's VA be called down for her French accent, despite being French. Is it really that important what some of these people here think?

I think all those are pretty on topic though. If people think he's fanservice because of certain logic why they don't think other characters are who follow same logic. Why someone doesn't think that he's fanservice and why not is on topic in myopinion. None of topics stays only in the opening question. Since this is forum with discussing I don't see problem on making counter-arguments either. Personally I have been trying to stay as civilized as I can, sometimes it's just hard cause of some rude and sexist remarks.

Considering you have spent the last few pages replying defensively about something you claim not to care about I am somewhat doubtful you would be so stoic about someone actually insulting you.
