Cullen is considered fan service by people because it upsets them that Alistair won't return and service them instead.

Alistair doesn't want to swoop in and steal Cullen's thunder.

I'll take both, thank you very much.

1) For the reason, why he´s so loved by fans even though his small role in the games, this is quite nice explanation, which made me like him too. :D

2) Why is he considered as fanservis? It seems to me that whatever fangirls like, that´s lame and when it actually appears in game, it´s fanservis.

3) About "justification" of his supposed appearence - it makes sense for me, if he appears (and not just as fanservis). I think that they put him into both previous games because of reason. Maybe there will be something in DAI, why he needs to be here?
Also, they said we are gonna see all sides (mages/templars) in better light in DAI. Considering he´s one of the most sympathetic  and reasonable Templars in DA, he´s good choice. Also considering that a lot of templars went cray-cray, we´re gonna need some templar who don´t want to kill all mages in sight.
Another reason, I think that companions are gonna be person/issue or side (Cassandra - Seeker faithful to Devine, Viviene - circle mage, Varric - red lyrium) and if I take that leaked survey as example (yes, I know that those aren´t confirmed) then we could have Grey Warden, free mage, Templar. So Cullen would present Templars between our companions.
Of course, they could have create some new Templar to fill this role, but as I said - he could be part of their plan for this story. I admitt, that the fact he´s fan´s favourite could be partially the reason, why writers choose to make him a (supposed) companion, but I believe they wouldn´t do it JUST because of it.

Ok, here's my feeling on it.

1) I'm a Cullen fan because "squee"
2) The circle has disintegrated, the templars have disintegrated. Cullen was there. He helped Hawk in the end, either pro mage or pro templar.
3) If anyone has a stake in what's going on, the templars certainly do. Not having a templar in the party is a grievous error in judgement.
4) Varric is there. Now that is fan service.

I'm guessing because a lot of female players want him to, Pamper their Paragons, Grey their Wardens, Circle their Mage, or Satisfy a demand of their Qun.

And male players!
Don't forget us!!!
:crying:

they keep asuming its the girl fans!!! trust me most are guys demanding this :wizard:

yes don't forget about us Male Fans!!! Cullen

Please. Are you honestly telling me you'd choose Cullen over that bearded male warden? I'm a girl and I wouldn't. I don't want a templar who will whine about how evil mages are. I want a warden who is not afraid to use any means necessary to achieve his goal.

Oh that male warden would be chosen everytime <3 most certainly but if he's not available Cullen would be choice #2 xD

why not both

Varric also has a decent reason to be there

Well, he definitely got a visual upgrade from DA:O and... I dunno?

I mean, he's most certainly still a jagoff (can we even use that word?), just more sane, believable breed of jagoff, unlike his peers in Kirkwall.

EDIT: And, while I don't believe he's half as likeable as his following on this website would imply, I guess it would be interesting to see his take on the war, and what his motives are for being a part of the Inquisition, if he does end up being a companion.

Excuse my stupid question, but (why) are we assuming Cullen is going to be a companion? Are there any semi-confirmed rumors?

I would not think so. I get Morrigan in DA:I Not as a companion mind you but shes there. If that's meant to be fan service that panders to people like me, then so be it. If people wish to swoon over Cullen then why stop them?

For the record I pay to see the reaction here on the BSN if we meet Cullen with a newly wedded wife. The reaction would be worth the money.

Probably because without a large fan following we wouldn't have run into him again after DA:O, and he certainly would never have returned as a companion. He was a relatively minor character in the first game that had no reason to appear in any subsequent Dragon Age game. His small character arc had completely run its course. If Cullen were to return as a companion this time around it would certainly be entirely due to fan service.

That being said while fan service is often used as a dirty word around these parts, it isn't always a bad thing. I have no problem with Cullen returning as a companion so long as he is given a plausible reason to return, and Bioware manages to write an interesting companion character.

One last thing...is there anything beyond fan speculation behind talk of Cullen returning as a companion? Unlike some other rumored companion like Sera, the Iron Bull, and the bearded Grey Warden, I don't believe Cullen has appeared in concept art, trailers, or gameplay videos.

I think it's from the now-obsolete companion survey? Bottom row, second from the right.

Didn't the writers say that they did not really realize how popular Cullen was prior to DA2, and now that he was in DA2 and with his popularity. that it would be interesting to see where his story goes, since he has seen the worst of both worlds?

Seeing his posts, I think he just plays DA for the eye candy.

I'm not sure why a character's attractiveness (or lack of it) should matter, unless that character is going to be a love interest. The party, and the world of Thedas in general, should be mix of people who are attractive, unattractive, or average-looking.

There was also a man that looked like him in one concept art. The one with Inquisitor stabbing the map and lots of people around. Some people say it's Cullen and some say the man looks nothing like him Posted Image
