I certainly remember seeing and taking part in raging threads that dealt with the lack of closure and clarity of the breath scene as much as any of the other endings.

Could you find a couple of those for me? Every time I look at this stuff it's exactly the way I remember it. Am I looking at the wrong threads?

Edit: I don't really mean to argue about whether the meaning really is obvious -- that can be fun, but it's not the point. The question is whether Bio thought the meaning was obvious enough to not waste time on. They could just be wrong about that

I could dig through the 1 year ago posts forever. Here's one tiny taster

At the end of the day f my brain can see breath scene and see it is a bone being thrown but equally my brain sees the juicy steak the suicide sequences of shep get in the original ending. Then someone comes along and promises me some meat on my bones in a clarification and closure Extended Cut. I rush along to wolf down this goodiness and find extra portions of steak for dead Shep and another crusty small bone for live shep. So yeah i think Bioware's thoughts on their preferred fate for Shep is clear and their willingess to concede to any other interpretation is strictly limited.

I wouldn't use The Darkspawn Chronicles as evidence towards anything, since it was: a) from a different team; B) a terrible idea; and c) terrible.

Some people simply wanted something more obvious than the breath scene. Honestly I can't blame them. It was really half-assed.

But the intent was definitely that Shepard survived the high EMS ending. That was pretty obvious to me even in the original ending. The issue of "you mean you sacrificed the Geth for your own survival? You monster!!!" came up. My response was, "What Geth? I shot Legion." To which I received even more "You monster!!!" But I didn't want Tali to die. Ah, so I'd commit genocide for Tali, and thus get rewarded by surviving the ending, and punished by never seeing Liara again.

@ iakus, let's not forget the 300 page thread asking for paid non-canon DLC with a reunion scene. This from the people who brought us "The Darkspawn Chronicles."

Indeed.  There was plenty of requests for a clear-cut "SHepard lives" ending.

And I'm not even accusing people of making stuff up :P

Stabbing Alistair in the head made the dlc for me.

Instead, they decided to include the Normandy evac scene, which gives everyone---Destroyers, Controllers, and Synthesizers---an extra scene with the crew/love interest. Probably not the creative choice I would've made during that period, but at least they were inclusive.

Ugh.   Nothing could make that DLC for me.

Easily my least favorite DLC from the company, and that's including Pinnacle Station.

Granted it was terrible, but it was 1) non-canon; and 2) paid optional DLC. That was the point. It wasn't like it was mandatory.

The existence of Pinnacle Station on the other hand was canon.

Once this became BioWare VERSUS the fans (and make no mistake, that is a mindset the fans initiated) then BW had no choice but to keep their ending.

I'd be inclined to at least aim some responsibility at the people who were making blatantly not true (and even to the point of being the exact opposite of what was the case) pre-release statements about a product at a point where it was literally finished and they knew full well what they were saying was a lie, as opposed to the people who were angered when they discovered that.

Because, I mean, damn. Remember when the demo came out and there was all that ruckus over there being so much auto dialogue and only two options at a time? What were we told? That only some dialogue was setup like that. That most of it wasn't. And then we got called idiots for assuming the worst.

Yeah, how did that turn out again?

I can't really comment since, like I said, I did a media black-out for ME3, which included forums. But having seen the pre-release comments after the fact, some of them are indeed head-scratchers. I will say that I am glad I wasn't subjected to the pre-release hype, as it seems to have helped me maintain an open mind and/or realistic expectations (for example, I expected the rachni to play a small role in ME3, a little bigger than ME2, less than ME1).

In that thread there are, to count:

1 person who suggests it might not be Shepard taking the breath
1 person who claims it's ambiguous whether he's alive or dead after the scene.
About 5-6 people, including iakus, refuting the first person's suggestion.

Edit: Lack of closure, yes. That is a big criticism of the breath scene. (Reunion scene being the real closure requested)

But the scene is clear regarding Shepard's future.

Edit 2: Missed one who did suggest that clarity in the EC would mean finding out whether Shepard was alive or dead, so I'll be fair and count it.
