I'm quite irritated that we're getting anime-style combat from DA2 back.

Did you watch the videos? They look nothing like DA2's combat

It has the anime aspects of it. The physically impossible sword swings, the arbitrary graphical additions to melee combat, the stabbing 100 times before something falls down. It's not da2's combat, but it does share those aspects that I liked the least from da2's combat system.

Everything you've pointed out here exists in DA:O. There's lots of moves you can make with swords that a real person could not. It's best to simply come to terms with the fact that Dragon Age's combat has never abided by the laws of physics as we know them.

It's gotten progressively more exaggerated fun with each game, however.

I agree completely, this game is more fun with each installment.

you appear to have confused the word more with less..it has got less more fun.

Yes. What did I say?

Judging by what I've seen of DA:I, that statement is false. It looks as though the action is slowed down, sword swings are no longer snap quick and the characters cannot leap what seems to be 15 feet forward to strike down on an enemy. BioWare has clearly toned down the cartoonishness of the combat animation, and added the extra bonus of being able to interact with the environment.

You can cut a keep door down with a couple swings. You couldn't even break a lock off a chest in DA:O. Slow combat is the furthest thing from realistic. It does not take much to kill someone.

@other people, I watched quite a bit of anime in the past, and I still read manga on a regulr basis. The whole breaking support pillars, cutting through doors, and glowing special melee moves are all signature anime combat forms. They're far from unique to anime, but it's the most popular medium in which they are found.

"realistic" combat. I would like to see limbs being removed when swinging with your axe or sword at the enemy and watching he/she bleed to death.

Nothing about DAO's combat was realistic. Nothing. Ever. Not even the weight behind the swings. So, not really. Maybe if DA was more about a believable fantasy world similar to low fantasy I'd be up for realistic combat. Seeing as the franchise has never had it and is purely a high fantasy with dark fantasy elements, no thanks.

i hope they will fix it
like: you need rogue to open that gate

or mage with FIREBALL :wizard:

^ a ram would be nice, or at least needing a blunt weapon. You'd wreck any sword trying to do that.

Not that it's necessarily better, but you do know that Cassandra used the shield to destroy the door, not the sword, right?

I come here every couple of months and and basically see the "same" threads on the frontpage every time xD

I still have no clue why people call DA:O Combat "realistic"... it's not. The aesthetics aren't realistic either... animations are just slower,. No one runs up to an opponent, just to come to a full halt in front of them, just to prepare a 3 sec. sword hit...
My visual preference for combat is certainly somewhere between DA:O (too low) and and DA2 (too high), so at first glance I thought DA:I doesn't look that bad.

Dunno... I like how combat looks in stuff like Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden (Black), or the LotR Movies. Just has to look cool, fluent and like getting hit actually hurts.

So people don't want scythe attacks that hit 6 opponents at once, the ability to slam your weapon into the ground and stun all nearby opponents, or the ability to teleport behind your enemy to do a backstab? You're saying you don't want to able to shoot a hail of arrows on top of a group of enemies while indoors?

Come on people. Those are all features of AAA gaming titles. Sure, DA could get rid of them, but then it might seem archaic without those widely demanded gaming features that are in all the latest games. How can you have a cinematic game without some combat moves taken out of popular movies like Thor, Hercules, etc.?

That was said without hint of irony. ;) I have no preference on this issue. But, it's interesting to watch people switch stances. =]

They'd clearly rather be able to shout and cause half a dozen enemies to fly backwards, stunned. Or stab two longswords into a person three times in rapid succession.

That's way more realistic. Way more.

I don't get why biower feel the need to make a compromise between over the top and dumb DA2 combat and much more realistic combat of Origins which also has deeper and more complex RPG system.

You know, there are many places where I would love to draw a bright line between the two games, but there isn't one here. Just isn't.

Origins had Flicker (rogue teleportation), War Cry, Rain of Arrows, Punisher, etc.

There's no doubt DA2 sped things up and turned them to 11, in order to make the Awesome button glow, but let's face it - yep - they were already there.

P.S. I use everything the game gives me and I never ask for anything to be taken out, especially when enemies are constantly falling from the sky in waves, I guess being rained on me from storm clouds.

No dog in this hunt, but facts are facts.

Something akin to Skyrim's combat would be more desirable. It's not completely realistic but it's the closest I've seen in a action-rpg. DA2's combat was ridiculous and DA:I seems to be following the same path... The only thing they did was slowdown the combat (source: gameplay trailers).

I don't know if 'realistic' is the right word. Less over the top is the way I would put it, but with pull chains, swords making craters in the ground, spell books floating beside mages in combat I doubt it.

But if it's not over the top, then you can't press the button and have awesome happen.

Here is where some of us saw the train pulling from the station

You need the "button awesome" connection.

After watching how in game my character can slam the ground and stun everyone nearby, I want to do the same IRL, it even seems possible to do so.

I guess a better word to use is convincing. Realism doesn't matter so much as making the combat involving and allowing the player to suspend disbelief more easily.

Once again, I stated in OP that DAO was not perfect either, it was just a bit more realistic. And in my opinion they should try to make it more realistic than DAO, instead of being flashy.

Both of them seemed pretty unrealistic. I expected it to, especially in a game with magic.

In Origins, we had shouts that can knock people over and don't forget about the "shuffle." I hate that damned shuffle. That didn't seem to realistic to me.

In DA2, it wasn't unusual to send bloody chunks flying everywhere. Plus, the Final Fantasy style BFSs were kind of crazy. I know that they had the BFS in Origins, but the design seemed a little more reserved versus what they had in DA2.

A middle ground would be welcome, and it looks like Inquisition is going to provide that. My only concern is making sure tactics factor back into gameplay. That was one of the things about DA2's combat that I could not stand; It's damn near impossible to plan tactics when not only enemies are literally falling from the sky, but the combat is almost too quick.

There is some good ideas in this thread for conventional weapons. However, what about magic? How does one make magic seem "realistic" in combat?

I'm with the "DAO was unrealistic, too" crowd. It had a more down-to-earth visual style, giving the combat a more immersive feel than DA2 or DAI, but it certainly wasn't realistic when you think about it. Though that's not a huge concern for me.

I overall like what I've seen from DAI thus far. The rock shattering and gate smashing is a bit over the top for my tastes, but it appears to be both tactical and responsive. Or at least it's trying to be.
The visual style is a nice medium between an overstylized DA2 and a down-to-earth (some might say generic) DAO. And the speed is at a nice medium as well.
