How do I make her my love interest?
Everytime I start the IIlos mission, Liara approaches me wanting to "join." I've tried rejecting her, hoping that I still have a shot at Ash, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
I thought things were going well with her... but apparently they're going better w/ Liara.
Did I mess up somewhere?

I'm pretty sure there's a couple of key moments to keep it going, right after Eden Prime when you're in the doctor's office, after you say positive things to Ashley, you'll see her smile, i think that puts you on the right track from the off. Then you just have to keep speaking to her, if you have both Ashley and Liara interested they'll both come to speak to you at the end of the third mission (i think it's the third) and you can basically choose.

Damn. I guess I messed that up.
I wonder what happens if I don't hook up with Liara or Ash? How would that carryover throughout the trilogy?...

well the relationship apparently continues but they're not team members in ME2. Theres going to be a ton of new love interests in the second one, so there's nothing wrong with not having one from the first game either.
if you want to start over this tells you how to do the romance sections - http://masseffect.wi...om/wiki/Romance

You just won't have a love interest from the first game....thus, no one to cheat on with Miranda/Subject Zero.
It has yet to be seen how big of a part of the story your love interest will play in ME2...as they aren't part of the squad, there doesn't seem to be much reason to not cheat on them Indiana Jones/James Bond style, unless they can be convo'd up progressively at a home point (like the citadel). I suppose in ME3 it will play a role, but if it really plays a big role, i don't know how fair that is to the gamer. Take a look at Indie: His love interest from the first movie only comes back in the latest one, and imagine how lame part of the movies would have been if there hadn't been the tension between Indie and a new girl....."Sorry, Willie, I'm still in love with Marion, who really isn't a big part of this movie because she's somewhere in America."

Without sounding like an uber geek, Temple of Doom is set before Raiders! But I completely agree with your point, ME is suppose to be fantasy, too many people want ME3 to be a nice cosy relationship with there LI, (they're doing it wrong)

Ok, well then replace Willie with Elsa, and then it makes sense. I like having the whole LI thing going (it adds another layer of Roleplaying), but I honestly think they should have taken the continuing love interest thing out of the equation, and then (if it will play a part in ME3) allow you to rekindle the LI with Liara, Ashley, or Kaiden.

Just keep talking to her, between missions. Sometimes new conversations appear after bigger assignments. Either tell Liara you just want to be friends (or the "eww, your an alien!" option has the same effect).
Alternatively don't talk to either Liara or Ashley and after the third plot world talk to Ashley once just before going to the Citadel.
