Why not is the real question

No think why seems to be the right question. I mean nothing really changes, nobody seems to age and Kirkwall doesn't really change to show the passage of time, the entire game could have conceivably have taken place over the span of 2 years for all it mattered.

Oh that one is easy.
Everyone in Thedas ages slowly.
There just hasn't been a lore entry about this yet.

What I want to know is: why doesn't anything change in 7 years? Not even people's clothes. Why is the passage of time not shown in any way? Why have a timeskip if nothing changes?

I've got a couple of opinons about that.

1) Prior to the industrial age, long distance travel was usually impractical and dangerous.  Many people never left where they grew up.  Fashions in an environment like that usually don't evolve, especially among merchant/middle class and the poor.  There is a lot of poor in Kirkwall.

2) It was a rushed game.  Trying to show any direct changes of time was probably not feasible, given the pretty short development cycle.

I think it's a mix of both, but that's just me.

Now, if I may ask in general, how does this relate to Inquisition at all?  Do you think there will be major time skips in DA:I?

Makes me more angry that EA rushed DA2. :pinched:

Life goes on, and the cothes are the fashion of Thedas, so they would likely have multiples of the same clothes, and would likely still be living in the same areas.

Getting exact duplicates of the same clothes would cost more since it would involve having things custom made by a tailor. Peasants would wear the same clothes until it was full of holes, patched, then eventually too worn to use and then get whatever new clothes they could as a replacement, and nobles would be constantly changing clothes so as not to be outdone. Why do people stand in the exact same spot for 7 years? Why does no one's hair grow? No one moves up (or down like Gamlen) in the world, no one ages, no one moves away or dies leaving a new family in their house. It all seems like a straight up rush job and if they knew they wouldn't be able to show the passage of time in ANY way, then why add it into the story at all?

There is actually one thing I noticed in my last play through that changed over time.
Lirene's shop door moved to the other side and there was a huge pillar outside where it used to be. Only a small difference but its there.

The city does change over time, though the differences are hard to notice.

honestly the only time I thought it should have seriously changed is after the Qunari attack, The whole area is blocked off and is never used, It would either have turned into a slum or Storage area for one of the warehouses or shipping companies. But I guess without a Vicount, reperposing an area can be a serious issue.

Why does it span so long its to tell a story, cause if after he goes to the deeproads he is suddenly the champion then the story doesn't make sense. The story isn't also just about Hawke its about Meradith as well, going from Knight-commander, to psychopath red-lyrim maniac.

You can't do that within 1 year of time without everyone going... yea right whatever... its called 'Suspension of disbelief'. Having to much go on in one year makes it hard to believe, having the red-lyrim eat away at Meradith's sanity over the course of years expecly after Bartrends episode. Increases the believability of Meradith going crazy later on in the story.

Also the time also shows the events leading up the the Qunari attack, considering how irritated the leader gets over time. So IMO the time element was used pretty well.

Sure sure, the world didn't change that much, but look at any "Town" even today, you will notice that it wont really have changed that much over the course of 10 years. Sure paints would have faded alittle things may be abit more rusty or dusty. But all in all not much would have changed, And if a city is decently upkeeped with enough work you wont notice much of a change.
