If I rival a comanion enough to ge the ability for them, e.g. 10% damage resistance for Aveline, and then I get friendship points and the rivalry fades will they lose the ability?

If you move away from that part of the gauge where the ability activates, you will lose the ability as well. I've done it several times, usually with Merrill.

Note that when you get to the maximum amount of F/R points, it will lock up and no longer be affected by any point gains/losses.

In short: you can't have both abilities.
