RPG that felt like my choices mattered, character customization.

The romances lol.

I was going through a dating sim phase and I found this.

I stayed for the story, characters, and combat.

ME1 and ME2 spoiled me.

Had a jones one day some time in the summer of 2012 to play something similar to them, but I was burned out of the Mass Effect games. Searched amazon for games by Bioware (completely forgot at the time that they made Dragon Age) and ended up getting the Ultimate edition of DAO. Picked up DAII maybe a month afterwards.

Pretty much exactly my story. Loved ME so figured I'd enjoy DA as well, picked it up on sale through Amazon and now have two series that I look forward to on release day.

Someone drew a fanart of the game, and grew curious. A few months after the release I picked up the game...and became obsessed.

DA:O is the first game of its genre I came across. I never played a game where I could make my own choices and see an outcome from what I chose. The characters and story depth took my breath away. I was so absorbed in it all it took me till the next PT to realize I could romance anyone.

And the banter. Oh Maker, the banter. I was dying. XD

I think it is also the first game I was able to create my own character. I couldn't stop making them because I had so many ideas.

About a year after that I came across ME - as much as I love that series, it just doesn't top DA for me.

Mass Effect 2 drew me to the game originally. That Blood Dragon armor looked sweet. Then I played the game. Dragon Age's lore was simple enough to understand at first, but it eased you into the more complex aspects as you played. That's why I stayed. Too many fantasy settings are needlessly complicated for the sake of being fantastical. Bioware made a fantasy universe that made logical sense.

How I got started? The box said "BioWare." I hadn't actually kept track of Dragon Age's development even though it was so long. Had kinda drifted away from gaming in general for a while. But after picking up and beating Mass Effect, I heard of Dragon Age Origins coming out. And since I've always liked BioWare ever since I got the first Baldur's Gate, I simply went out to buy it.

I'm staying not only for what has always kept me coming back for more in BioWare games, that is great characters in good world-building, but what is specific about Dragon Age to me is how perfectly free I feel. It's incredibly empowering to be able to play such a rare character as a black lesbian and not face sexism, nor to feel like I'm playing a last minute addition of a female game mode.

Thedas has tons of problems which make it an interesting place, but those problems are separate from the issues I face in real life. The IRL issues I know are pretty much non-existant in Dragon Age to a level I've never seen in any other game series. Characters are people, not genders or sexual orientations. They are human, elven, Qunari, Tevinter and Orlesian - but the grouping debates of my own society are not reflected.

I get to play a game in a well-written and believable world with fantastic NPCs, without feeling like I'm playing a game not made for me. Dragon Age is made for everybody, and I freaking adore the games for that. I really cannot describe in mere words how good it feels to get to be something of a primary customer; to not be second-rate and de-prioritised. I'm just a fan, and I feel welcome in this franchise and in this fanbase.

I heard Dragon Age Origins was a very good RPG. Truth be told, it was my first true RPG ( I consider TES fantasy/action games with RPG elements ) and it sucked me in instantly.

The character trailer for Morrigan. Saw the awesome spells.
Seeing the brief stonefist spell had me super excited to try out the game.
Bought it, played it, loved the lore and setting, was and still is one of my most favourites games, novels and comics.
Woot!

DA:O was the first bioware game I ever played. A friend of mine had preordered it a few months before the game came out and we played it together on his xbox once he got the copy. Neither of us had any actual idea what the game was about, hell, we thought we could play multiplayer on it at first! (We got the idea from the gameplay videos where there were five characters fighting as a group against the monsters, we never noticed the parts that mentioned companions) In any case, we both liked it and I got the game aswell.

What keeps me interested in dragon age now, years after I first played it? The lore, the story and the characters. Good gameplay does a lot for me, sure, but it is the stories in games that makes me love them.

I only played it at the request of a group of people I regularly chatted with on the BSN. It ended up being so good that I spent an extra $20 on Awakening, then an extra $60 on the Ultimate Edition.

It's basically the full package. Characters, lore, story, music, customisation, levelling up. What hooked me was probably that first visit to camp, with it's theme song and all the interesting conversations to be had.

Liked playing mass effect and thought the same kind of style in a fantasy setting would be pretty good.

My step-mother and father played it in 2010, I thought it looked interesting so I started playing it. At that time I wasn't that interested in games, I did play some games but I was never as interested in it as I am now.

However, after playing a lot of games with character creation, I can't seem to play games without it.

Its connection to BioWare, as I'd thoroughly enjoyed Mass Effect. Rented it for the PS3, and it went well enough. Not quite a fan, but it was entertaining, and eventually gave DA2 a try on the PC. My feelings were about the same for the second, though I preferred the style of the first.

Fair enough, but what keeps you invested in the series?

I dig their writing, and it's probably going to be quite some time before the next Mass Effect shows up. I'm not expecting the best RPG ever made, but it'll be worth the ticket price....probably.

To those that were less happy (or unhappy) with DA2 or ME3, what keeps you interested in DAI enough to be hear reading this thread?

Now that I finished my second DA2 playthrough (took a while until I convinced myself to get back to it again), I have to admit that I enjoyed the game a lot more. It is probably because I knew what to expect from it. I loved ME3 except for the ending but I'm not the only one.

Anyway, IMO BioWare games are exceptional because of their stories. It is something that makes you want to play the games over and over again. If I had to name one thing I'm looking forward in DA:I, that is the story.

I saw this advert on tv, which explaned nothing but i did pipe my curiosity enough to look on wikipedia, which also at the time explaned nothing other than differen't characters would effect the story.
About a year later I saw it in the bargain bin at me local supermarket and thought "sure, why not"

So I played it, enjoyed the story and characters and have been a fan ever since.

(I must really like this series better than I thought if I can remember all of this)

Random purchase for me. I'd played Mass Effect and loved it but didn't even realise DA:O was another Bioware title until I loaded it up for the first time.

I absolutely loved it and played nothing else for months after I got it. I love the story, the characters and the gameplay, it all just works for me in a way no other game quite has since.

Okay.. good a place as any for my first post.

What drew me were the companions. This idea that people you recruit travel with you, form friendships with you, have their own backstories and personalities was just incredible to me.

DAO came to me at a time in my life when I really needed a distraction and wow did it succeed! I have never been as immersed in a game since, though ME did come close.

I was bored and there was a sale.

Same. Saw it in Gamestop one day and went "What the hell, nearly every other game they've got here doesn't interest me."

I think both happened to me as well! Back when I used to still tolerate GS BS... anyways, I tried out DAO even though the guys at the shop warned me against buying it, saying it was crap and not to get the game. I got lured in by Mass Effect from Bioware and thought, "If this Western RPG company was unque enough to draw me in for the first time from JRPGs, maybe there other series isnt so bad as well?" and I bought it anyway. I thought the graphics were terrible and dated and the combat was terrible feeling and for the life of me couldnt figure out why they did it that way, but the story was amazing. The overall plot to the world, the character interaction, the banter, the social classes, the lore, all of it drew me in. After DAO I hoped for a 2nd game and one came. Not what I expected, but hte combat felt good finally, but lost some of the tactical aspect from DAO with the cam and being able to adjust to situations with character placement, but it was a step in the right direction. Sadly the way the story was told was not in the right direction and had me scatching my head on what was going on, but the character relationships did improve. Im hoping DAI will learn from its misteps and from others in the industry and tell an amazing story, but have the combat, exploration, customization, Romances, etc to back it up this time. both games had serious flaws, but the potential is so high for the series, esp now, I hope the best for it. I want the games to rival the books quallity.

I've been playing PC games most of my life.. Been playing Bioware games since the original BG in '98, so I eagerly awaited Dragon Age for years after Throne of Bhaal.

Been a Bioware fan for awhile. Figured I knew what I was in for. And knew it'd probably follow the BG/Kotor formula than do something a little different like Mass Effect.

Rejoice then, since it seems Bioware is planning on releasing lots and lots of news about ME4 in the upcoming weeks!

Bioware had a fairly good track record with me up back then, heard they spent a load of time making DA so I figured I'd try it out and ended up enjoying it.
