Its connection to BioWare, as I'd thoroughly enjoyed Mass Effect. Rented it for the PS3, and it went well enough. Not quite a fan, but it was entertaining, and eventually gave DA2 a try on the PC. My feelings were about the same for the second, though I preferred the style of the first.

Fair enough, but what keeps you invested in the series?

I dig their writing, and it's probably going to be quite some time before the next Mass Effect shows up. I'm not expecting the best RPG ever made, but it'll be worth the ticket price....probably.

Rejoice then, since it seems Bioware is planning on releasing lots and lots of news about ME4 in the upcoming weeks!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I believe that article is talking about incoming DAI dev diaries.

I first played Dragon Age: Origins in November 2012, when a rush of pretty good games were coming out. To say I disliked the combat system was a understatement. I disliked it enough to pretty much swear off ever playing it again. However, I did end up giving it another shot, and I liked the narrative and the charaters enough to sideline my dislike for the combat and consider it one of my top ten favorite games of all-time. I liked Dragon Age II enough, but my opinion on the game was the polar opposite of Origins. I liked the combat, but I thought the quality of the narrative and the characters dropped significantly from Origins.

Anyway, what drew me to Dragon Age was what drew me back to Origins. The narrative and the characters. Same thing that drew me to Mass Effect.

Basically because of my love for Mass Effect and BG. After finishing the ME trilogy I gave DA:O a shot and ended up loving that franchise even more than ME. :D Mainly because ME is more limiting RPG-wise, compared to DA.

My love of ME and ME2 combined with the Bioware name brand.

I have loved fantasy books and films and I had never really had an opportunity to play a decent fantasy game before, I saw Dragon Age in my local game store, did some research online and saw that it was well rated by the critics and gamers alike and I thought what the hell, why not.

That's what got me to try the first DA game, why I keep coming back is more complicated. I saw potential in DAO and DAO:A but thought both games were rough around the edges and missing something. DA2 flat out disappointed me. So why do I keep coming back, I guess it is hope, hope that Bioware will get it right next time.

My son convinced me to play Mass Effect.  Took him a long time though because I'd walked by and seen him playing it and kept telling him I didn't like shooters.  He finally talked me into it and I fell in love with it.  When I finally finished it he said you know, the same people made this other game I think you'll like even more, it's fantasy stuff like you like and gave me Dragon Age.  The rest...is history! <3

The fact that it's developed by Bioware. I really enjoyed Jade Empire and Mass Effect and when they announced starting a new fantasy franchise I was already hyped for it.

So far I liked both DA:O and DA2, though especially 2 had ist flaws, so there's no reason for me not to come back. I always loved Bioware games since I first discovered Jade Empire with ME being my favourite franchise. At least until ME3 happened (I hate that game, not only due to its ending), so Dragon Age took the spot and will hopefully deliver with DA:I. The game looks absolutely awesome and it finally brings back my favourite number one feature that was lacking in DA2 and the ME series: race selection.

If they include this feature in their next ME installment I might even look at that Franchise again. :)

Looking back at this thread, maybe I ought to answer the original question instead of just teasing Silfren.

In a nutshell: It was there, and people had a lot of good things to say about it.

Let's see.. I often try to follow developers that impress me.. and ME2 really impressed me. I hadn't been much an RPG'er before then, mainly shooters and strategy.

Relatively recently, Gamestop was having a sale to help clear out their last-gen inventory and I found DA:O. I hadn't played the game at all before, and the fanboys never shut up about it, and it was like $5, so I figured it was low risk investment. Played it for about ~1.5 playthroughs and then did all the Origin Stories. The combat was BAD, I really did not like it, but I was able to overlook it for the story and characters. Everyone was well fleshed out, events were relatively well laid out, choices were almost never one-sided, and overall a solid-story based experience.

So, I am not really a Dragon Age fan, and thus far have preferred the ME series. But on the whole, Bioware has 'impressed' me enough to continue to look into their games, despite a few 'hiccups' along the way.

I had just beaten Mass Effect 2 and I needed MORE. So I took the leap and bought DAO. Since then, it has become one of my favorite franchises surpassing Mass Effect by miles. I just love fantasy and became so invested in the world.

Funnily enough, that trailer with the marilyn manson song, which turned out to be complete bullshit since the game was nothing like that. But then I stayed for the dialogue and alistair.

Baldur's Gate :)

I played BG2 so much that even now I can't replay it because everything is just sooo familiar. NWN was OK, but then some of the modules were just great. I followed the DA:O development process for ages (years, I guess) and overall I thought it was really good. The custom origin idea was innovative (although originally planned for NWN I later found out) and really made each playthrough different. And the banter bickering between your companions is possibly the best bit :).

DA:A I played through one and a half times, it was a bit buggy and I didn't like the way they 'streamlined' character interactions. Played the DA2 demo and didn't like the combat; watched bits on youtube and didn't really like the streamlining. I have high hopes for DA:I though :)

One if my friends really sung high praise of DAO, so I decided to look into it. I saw one of the trailers, the one about recruiting Leliana. It looked like it would have a really interesting story. Then I saw it was made by the developers behind KOTOR, the only previous RPG I'd played. That sealed the deal.

I've stayed because DAO delivered. The combat was better than KOTOR, the story was entrancing, and the world was immersive. Despite the disappointment of DA2, I stay because DAI is shaping up to be closer to DAO in terms of quality.

A friend bought the game for my Husband for christmas thinking it was multiplayer a la Champions of Norath or Baulder's Gate (for PS).

Found out it was single player, and we were disappointed.

But then watched my husband start his playthrough.....and I was hooked. (he put the game down, I picked it up that night, played straight through from Friday night until Sunday morning when I had to leave for work (thank you for letting me sleep on the airplane flight)...then while out of town....bought and downloaded the game onto my laptop so I could continue playing)

I've played way more than him now.....and then of course DA snowballed into ME series, Jade Empire, KOTOR, SWTOR, Kingdoms, Dreamfall, Diablo.....

I fully blame DA for my descent into games....oh, and for finding out I prefer gaming on the PC.

Picked up ME1 and ME2 on a sale during january 2011 and after i'd completed both of them a few times i felt like trying something new and since i had enjoyed both games fiercly i felt that DA was worth a try. Didn't have that many fantasy games at the time so it was more a will to play something different that made me try

A friend of mine I worked with actually. I was a big Fable fan, and one day he lent me Origins for xbox, said I should try it if I liked Fable. I was a bit reluctant till I heard I could play a girl. I've not looked back since.

I played AD&D quite a lot in the 70's and 80's, so RPG's in general held my interest. Anything that follows the general AD&D genre is on my "must play" list.

DAO drew me in, DA2 kept me there. (I played the ME series after I got ME2 free, with another game).

Funny enough my younger brother played DA:O first and had the collectors edition with all the DLC's included. I watched him go through a play through and asked him to borrow it around the time he bought DA2 and after he finished DA2 (he wasn't really impressed) I borrowed it as well and really enjoyed both games, eventually buying both games myself, haven't regretted either choice.

I bought the PC version and started playing but got busy and nver finished.  About a year later i was bored and wanted something for my PS3 so bought the game and fell in love. I had never played a game before that had the relationships, companion dialogue and humor, and the number of choices and was blown away!

My situation is probably really weird. I was all about Dragon Age's first release. I knew someone who was (for a short time) a writer on this project in its very early stages. But then I read the Penny Arcade webcomic. I hated the thought of the Templars - the entire concept provoked some strong reactions. So I skipped it completely.

Then I came across Mass Effect right before 3 came out and did 2, 3, and 1 (I'm on a PS3). After already burning through all the DLC, I looked into DA again. as a human mage. I barely got past the Joining and kind of gave up. It felt generic, bland, and the graphics were so out of date as to be difficult to watch.

Fast forward a few more years to early February '14. I was stuck at home with the flu and didn't feel like putting even more hours into Skyrim. So I popped in DA:O to give it another shot. I tried a different origin this time (human noble). I still had all the same thoughts. But this time i noticed that each generic trope had a slight twist to it. And over time, I saw that all the slight twists kind of went together. And then I started to pick up other companions than just Dog, Alistiar, and Morrigan. Okay, it was pretty interesting. I played through the entire flu - when I probably should have been sleeping. Bought all the DLC and ordered DA 2 sometime around the Landsmeet.

I then picked up all the Dark Horse comics, the novels, the tabletop RPG, the Seeker, Redemption, the machinima, World of Thedas, and the collector's edition strat guide for DA2.

Kinda went all in.

Character development in DA:O. Not much with DA2 where most of the characters were forgettable, although the combat mechanics were fresh and engaging.
