My buddy gave me his DA:O copy when he was clearing out his apartment and that was that.

Mass Effect. As I was (and still am) in love with the universe, I thought I'd pick up the Dragon Age games. Foolishly, I didn't play them for a good year or two, but when I did, I also fell in love with this universe.

As for what keeps me invested - The characters, the stories and the locales.

A friend with similar taste to my own recommended it.

I saw my older sister playing a really cool game a while back but I didn't know what it was at the time. When I found out it was DA:O, it was an insta-buy.

Also it had dragons, swords, magic, the whole fantasy thing, which I liked. Mainly the dragons...

Bought Awakening and DA2 along with it, love all of them.

Esssentially it started for me with a humourous comic featuring Alistair,Sten and Zevran. I had never heard of Dragon Age before (or basically every other game ever) but fantasy in a medival setting has always been my weakness. I was still unsure whether or not I should really buy it (even though the Ultimate Edition of Origins was pretty cheap at that time) but the fact that same sex romances were possible in that game sold me (that you can play as a female character probably would have positively affected my decision as well but at that time I thought that was a given).

And then I got sucked in: medival kind of world, lots and lots of lore that you slowly uncover, amazing characters with interesting relationships to each other and to you, party banter, interesting quests/storylines,shaping the PCs personality... = EVERYTHING.. And that's what keeps me coming back as well.

I was addicted to Oblivion for a while and with no follow-up in sight, I started looking for alternatives. This was about a month before Origins was released. In my searching, I stumbled on the DAO website, got excited that it might satisfy my fantasy RPG itch, and pre-ordered. Needless to say, it definitely did what I needed it to do. Too well, if the cumulative hours of playing, discussing, and speculating are any indication. Oh, what heights of the human experience might I have otherwise crested...

I remember that I was on some random website to watch an anime... and you know how they often have those chat boxes up in the corner?  Maybe not, but they often do, and while I never participate I remember just looking up for a moment and someone namedropped the game, talking about how it was looking like an awesome game.  The name "Dragon Age" really piqued my interest (I like Draguns) so I did a little search and ended up pre-ordering the game.

Back then I was just a console shooter/fighter kid and had never played real RPGs even though I was a fan of fantasy stories and settings.  But DAO pulled me into this world and I've been trapped ever since.

Same-sex romances are what brought it to my attention over other, similar games. Up until I heard about those, DA:O looked and sounded like a pretty generic fantasy story, which it is

It was free on Origin. I didn't expect to completely fall in love with it as I did since I really wasn't that into video games, now, I can't get enough. :)

Well, it wasn't DA:O's trailers I'll tell you that much. Those were pretty friggin bad.

I remember the day I got it actually and why. I was in GameStop with my dad and brother and I was looking for a game because I had completely ripped apart the Fallout series after playing it for a total of nearly 1300 hours. I stumbled upon Dragon Age: Origins because it had awesome case art imo and picked it up and looked at the back. At the time, it was still expensive and my dad wasn't going to get it for me but then he looked at it and he thought it looked badass and wanted to play it as well. So he picked up the game and DLC the day later, gave it to me, then I was instantly in love with it.

Moral: Buy your own games from now on. If he hadn't liked it, I may not have been into BioWare games at all. Lol.

Huh... what drew me to DA? My boyfriend. He gave me DA:O and said It was awesome, oldschool RPG, Baldur's Gate like, but way better. I have my collection of BioWare and/or Black Isle games (NWN, BG, KotOR, Planescape Torment - the best game ever made imho), so sure, I had to try it. He was right, I actually skipped classes in my first PT just to play/see what happens in the game. Not long after that, the DA2 was released. I wasn't impressed: reusable environment, wave-oriented fights, annoying NPCs, the story were just weak, and limited dialogue choices were gutting the immersion from player's perspective (ok, maybe it's just me). The only thing which makes DA2 amazing game imho is the whole 'grayness' (of the Qun, of mage/templar conflict) and for that reason alone i cannot simply wave modren games off as childish and/or shallow. And so i wait to be amazed again ;)

the trailers that played on tv piqued my interest, but then once i heard Claudia Black's voice, I knew I had to play this game.  I bought a ps3 just for that reason.

The Baldur's Gate series. I played the heck out of those games and when I heard that Origins was meant to be a spiritual successor to BG, I jumped on it. I knew that Bioware had been involved in both games with Black Isle so that was a good recommendation.

Honestly? It was my local gaming/internet Cafe, which is also where I discovered Mass Effect. It had the game in its RPG section and I tried it. Been hooked ever since

This is based upon a PM question I got a couple of days ago.  Also, what keeps you coming back?

I'll add my thoughts later, but for now I figured I'd just toss the question out there.

What drew me to the DA series was the BioWare logo on the box of DA:O.  We already owned KOTOR 1 and 2, and I played the heck out of Jade Empire on the original xbox. I knew any game they made would be amazing and offer me female playable characters, which is a huge deal for me.

What keeps me coming back is the same thing: BioWare makes the best games in the industry (IMHO), and as long as they keep making them, I will keep buying them and continue to be a loyal and happy customer and fan. ^_^

Curiosity. Love DAO. Wasn't fond of DA2. Hoping DAI will make up for it. DAI has a lot riding on it for a fair portion of RPG players. BW has drifted further and further away from true RPG since DAO and ME1/ME2. I am hoping they really do return to what we had with DAO. If not, I guess that's it then. I love DAO and that's good enough for me.

Seems weird, but I was drawn in more into Dragon Age because there is a lot of bigotry and racism in the game. It is interesting for me to play through it and watch how other people think and deal with all those situations.

I guess it's like social experimentation for me.

I played Mass Effect and wanted more RPGs, so I bought a bunch of random titles to try out, and Dragon Age: Origins happened to be one of them. It became one of my favorites very quickly.

It was a fantasy WRPG. Chances were I was gonna buy it eventually no matter what. But it was from Bioware and, since I loved Mass Effect 1, I preordered the CE.

I keep coming back because I like the setting and I enjoyed both previous DA games :)

Back when Dragon Age: Origins was just Dragon Age and this was the only screenshot, it was David Gaider talking lore with the community that sold me, and sold me hard. I made a website back then that compiled quotes of everything he or Chris Priestly said about the setting that struck me as cool, just for the purpose of evangelizing it to my gaming friends so they could be as hyped as I was.
