Some people recommended Mass Effect to me and I liked it, so when I saw them talking about Dragon Age I thought to try it out.
I liked the characters and gameplay. Also, really intriguing lore.

My ex knew I'd played KOTOR and BG to death and knew I liked playing games as a lady and he thought I'd like it...bought it and Mass Effect 1 and 2 for my b-day.

I've been playing RPGs in general since I was able to, starting on the PC with various text based adventures and on the table with first edition AD&D, and I'm always at least casually watching what RPGs are coming up. I've kept an eye on what BioWare specifically is up to since Baldur's Gate (it and Baldur's Gate II being my favourite games for quite some time), although after Knights of the Old Republic there was a time when I didn't pay so much attention. Dragon Age caught my attention back, as the reason I hadn't been paying attention was because Jade Empire and Mass Effect both had aspects to them that I was really not fond of at all (I hadn't played Mass Effect yet at that point, but all the marketing had given me the impression that one couldn't make one's own character, which as it turns out was uncomfortably close to the truth). Dragon Age promised to be more of a return to the type of game I like best, so I followed it until it was released and then played it. What keeps me coming to back to replaying Origins is that it is, in fact, very close to the kind of game I like best -- certainly compared to other recent games -- and I like the story and setting and all, and it has also got a good bit of replayability to it.

What keeps me coming back to the series, on the other hand, is a little harder to pin down. In the case of Dragon Age II, it was initially because I enjoyed the first game so much, and because I am interested in the setting and all. I was very leery of it after hearing of several decisions made (voiced PC, dialogue wheel, combat changes), but decided to give it a chance anyhow. I'm going to replay it before the next game comes out, make sure I remember all of what went on and such, but with the same character -- because it's got no replayability to me other than that. So, nothing really keeps me coming back to that game, except wanting to make sure I remember what went on in it. There's some interesting stuff in the game, but far too much in the way of enjoying it.

As for Inquisition... well, I may tend towards the cynical, but I try to keep at least some optimism. Many of the things announced so far seem to be going back in the right direction, I'm still interested in the setting, and there really aren't that many RPGs that are even as close to being what I like as Dragon Age II was. There are still some real albatrosses around the game's neck, to my way of thinking (since clearly at least two of those things that I didn't like about DA II are still there), but there has been enough positive that I'm again willing to give it a chance. After that? Who can say. I expect I'll keep at least checking in now and again, but how much I pay attention to what's going on with Dragon Age in general will depend a lot on how much Inquisition really does fix from Dragon Age II.

I remembered seeing IGN's video with game of the year nominees when Mass Effect was nominated. Back then I had no idea what Mass Effect was, but from the few seconds of footage they showed, I thought it was a generic third person shooter. I later decided to play Knights of the Old Republic for the first time because they released it as part of the "Star Wars: Best of PC" box. I liked the game so much that I looked up other games made by BioWare and noticed that Mass Effect, which I at first had no interest in, was also made by them.

Now to answer the question: The reason I started playing Dragon Age is because I liked Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic.

My older brother introduced me to the Mass Effect series when it came out.  I didn't play until a year or two afterwards, but enjoyed it a lot.  He has a tendency to collect games and also bought Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Origins.

A little bit after I finished playing ME1 and ME2 numerous times, I had trouble finding any game that had that same level of immersion.  I kept hearing about DA:2 coming out and the hype around it, so I decided to try DA:O.  Admittedly, I did not get into it the same level as Mass Effect, but I enjoyed it well enough.  I went on to play DA:2, didn't enjoy that one as much, but over time DA started to become a staple in games that I have an urge to play every couple of months.

Bioware provides the best story - gameplay - replayability with their games for me personally.  Countless hours of enjoyment no other games delevopper ever did provide for me, not even Bethesda with the elder scrolls series.  So a good investment even if their games are not perfect, but perfection is not what I am seeking, enjoyment is.

Even weaker games like DA2 are head and shoulders above other developpers and I can honestly say I don't find that a great game.

I do try other games but mostly they are a huge letdown besides the Spellforce universe so I mostly play Bioware and the Nordic Spellforce games.

I refrained from buying other developpers games at full price alltogether and make a list of potential games and buy them for a song and dance on steam/gog.  So sick and tired I got of buying and owning games I only play for a couple of hours and got fedup with real soon.

As long as Bioware produces games where I can stick countless hours in because of the enjoyment they provide I will buy them it is as simple as that really.

The year DA2 was released, a bunch of my friends were obsessed with it and that was the first time I heard about Dragon Age or Bioware at all. So because of them, one day I picked it up on a whim, started playing, and realized I was addicted because of how fun it was. Then I started the Long Way Home quest and met Merrill, and it was true love at first sight, which solidified that addiction. And honestly, I was just in love with everything about it: the characters, the worldbuilding, the absolutely beautiful swears, the very strong female presence, the fact that I had four potential romance options and all of them I could romance with someone of the same sex, the way I could give my character a distnict established and interesting personality and how it felt like I was playing as a character who is an actual real person of their own, the way it affected me emotionally on a very deep level and would refuse to stop making me feel things (and often painful things) because of how attached I was to those pixels on a screen and how much I was not expecting that.

It took me several years before I got off my lazy butt and actually played Origins because I'm a terrible fan, but up until then I've replayed Dragon Age 2 so many times I've lost count. And while I enjoyed Origins a great deal and it was great, and it made me feel things too, and there were plenty of characters in it that I love, I've never quite been as attached to it. But it did solidify my addiction to this franchise and the world Bioware created in it for good.

Mass Effect. Which led me to the BSN. Which led me to DA.

Fell in love with the rich lore; great banter and romances; sassy personality options in dialogue, even in DAO--the warden could  be quite snarky.

I started with Jade Empire a long time ago and got addicted to that style of RPG, which was unlike anything I'd experienced before. Although I guess technically I started with Knights of the Old Republic, but I never finished that so Jade Empire was really the starting point. Then there was Mass Effect and following that came Dragon Age. I love anything fantasy so I was all over that.

I didn't want to play Dragon Age at all when it came out.  I was spending over 8 hours a day on Final Fantasy 11 and I was surprised at how many of my friends were logging off the game to play Dragon Age: Origins.  After a while my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to give it a try.  With such a great storyline and so many different choices I got hooked right away.  Bioware quickly became my favorite gaming company.  Dragon Age is my favorite game.  Yes, I love Dragon 1 and 2 both.   With the new consoles and from what I've seen, I'm very excited for DA:I.

Fall can't come soon enough.

I got Origins as a Christmas present and knew nothing about it (or Bioware, for that matter) beforehand. It quickly became my favorite game, and I also enjoyed DAII, although not quite as much. I love the characters, story, and humor the most.

My local gamestop girl did actually. I went in and asked a few questions because I just got a 360 and she said exactly this "You are going to love Bioware games! Try this one!!!" and she handed me dragon age, it's an awesome story and I look forward to seeing what inquisition has in store for us :)

My daughter was actually playing on the PC, and I enjoyed watching it.  Once I realized there was romance, I was hooked!

I bought a PS3 and the game, and I actually began playing video games!  I had not touched a (this dates me!) gaming system since Colecovision in the early 80s! It was easy to learn, and I played in Casual mode since I was not good at games at all.  Since then I have bought DA2, Kindoms of Amalur and Skyrim.

I am eagerly anticipating DAI!

I'd always been a gamer; can't stand first person's, and isometrics were nice but most were too far away to 'feel' anything for the characters or environment (a la Baldur's Gate which I loved, at the time of BG 1).  I prefer games that I can be immersed in. I saw my daughter playing DA2 on her XBox, and my husband playing it on his, and was captivated but I wanted something I could play on PC...  since they both hogged the XBoxes LOL so I had to see where the story began.  Bought Origins at a discount on Steam and have been captivated ever since.

So...  is it November yet? O:-)

Anyone here that pre ordered DA:O or am I one of the rare people who did.

I also did. I was a long time BG fan. DAO is the best to me though. I enjoyed ME1, ME2, and Kotor but DAO was such a excellant RPG it is the standard in my book. SWTOR has some really good story lines.Still DAO is top of my list. BG follows it.

mate of mine said the company that made baldurs gate was making another RPG, i said Mass effect 2 has bee announced? and he said nah its this game called dragon age its all swords and ****, and i said god your a bogan. then i went online to look for everything about dragon age.

what kept me coming back was, apart from hating pretty much everyone in DA:II the story, the plot, the world and the possibility of some day getting to play in Tevinter! is just awesome. (besides i have a certain high dragon that owes me a debt for letting it live.)

but above all else, what keeps me coming back is the hope that i can in some way kill Hawk and Varric, slowly and painfully! at the hands of my Imperium Magister! (yes i didn't even like hawk I hated the MOFO)

I'd heard it was in development for years while looking at... gosh I think it was Knights of the old Republic 2. I followed development on and off not joining the forums or anything until it was a little while before its big announcement. I really liked Bioware games up to that point(even the less successful ones, like jade empire) and I'd always wanted a sort of unique straight up fantasy from them. When they first started talking about it, it sounded really cool there was this whole dark low magic setting thing it had going for it and while it ended up being a little more high fantasy than I thought I really enjoyed it and have kept coming back ever since.

Ooh I just remembered they had this one idea early in development that certain powerful spells would require a staff to cast and other spells could be cast regardless. But the staff ones were like HUGE and devastating. For some reason that always appealed to me.
