It was a couple of years ago when I received DA:O for free on Origin for having an EA/Origin account for a year. I was actually given a choice of a few games and I picked DA:O because it was Bioware and how could it not be good after I've played Mass Effect soooooo many times? I loved it so much I did a couple play throughs on my crappy laptop at a whopping 7 FPS (I don't have a gaming PC). I can't believe my laptop didn't just explode. Bought the games for my 360 last year so I could play them at a higher frame rate. :P

The depth of the lore, the characters, the writing, the banter, the gameplay.... All of it keeps me invested and brings me back.

What's so cool about Elves? Dwarves have awesome underground cities, The Legion of the Dead, Oghren, Varric, and Fun Size Bonus.

Elves have.. City Elves and the LOLish.

I'm sure Varric would disapprove of being associated with Orzammar, since he considers it little more than cramped tunnels filled with body odor and nug sh*t. That place is pretty much hell's armpit with darkspawn constantly scratching at its borders.

Anyway, what actually drew me into this series was Mass Effect. I was not particularly familiar with of anything BioWare, as I was only recently starting trying out some games, but after finishing that series I thought I'd go for their fantasy IP, and now I actually like it more so far, and I didn't think I'd ever come to that conclusion.

Fair enough, but what keeps you invested in the series?

Edit: Wow, the way that came out last time was sounded worse than I thought!  I apologize for that.

Dwarves.

I honestly love Dwarves in pretty much every work.

S'funny you say that.  I feel the same way about Elves.

You do realize this makes us mortal enemies now?

....for at least three books/movies anyway.

Bring it, Evil!  I'll bet on the Noldor over Durin's Folk any day!

That's why we saved your ass from Glaurung and kicked your cousin's arses at Doraith.

Excuse me. Those moronic losers didn't do sh*t. They had a fat Hobbit doing all the hard work, and saving their ungrateful asses repeatedly, to boot. I wouldn't trust a one of 'em to find his ass with both hands and a map.

That's the book, not the movies.

Come now. Since when did movie adaptations overrule books?

When Smaug started speaking. Epic voice. And a good fight with the dwarves.

If the Maker had thought of the children he never would have created dwarves in the first place, the bastard.

Came for the ME2 Blood dragon armour (yes, I know), stayed for the magic and holy-****-same-sex-romances (at that point the only other game I had encountered with SS "relationships" was Fable)

Not really sure why I stay..

DA has always been second fiddle in my book to ME, Skyrim, halo, etc... other series I follow...

I suppose its just a series I use when i tire of the others

Pre-ordered the collector's edition.  Same case for Mass Effect 1.

I read the game informer article, than saw the Marilyn Manson trailer, I bought it as soon as I had the money to do so along with the original mass effect. and apart from the obvious missteps, bioware continues to make really immersive games that I enjoy, I've been a fan since Kotor. might get around to playing jade empire one day as it is in my backlog.

Or maybe it's a mistranslation and the maker was stoned when they made the dwarves.

It took me til my second try of playing Origins that I really got into it. I had picked up Origins for my PS3, and I hadn't seen any ads yet. I was just starved for a new RPG... Then I couldn't get into it. The controls felt a little awkward and clunky. I chalked it up to a mild disappointment and actually largely forgot about the game for awhile. I had to admit, I had a serious chuckle when seeing the promo that used Marilyn Manson as it's soundtrack. It has never seemed to fit.

A few years later, I started playing ToR and hanging out in the forums.  In there, they talked a lot about Origins and encouraged me to give it another shot. So in late 2012, I picked up another copy. This time, I went with the PC version. I haven't been much of a console gamer since the PS2 era. I immediately fell in love with Thedas. The Warden's tale as well as the romance feature was very welcome and I really felt like Thedas was something different. Something that felt much less like a typical LotR ripoff.

I was leery of Dragon Age 2, as I heard extremely mixed and passionate reviews for the game. Still, went it when on sale for about $30,  I grabbed it. I really enjoyed it overall. Mainly it was the characters and the details about life and society from the "little guy's" perspective that still brings me back to the sequel.

I stay around for...pretty much all of it. I still think BioWare writers create some of the best characters among any gaming company. The roleplaying, the story, the themes, the evolving gameplay, the romances; all of that is why I'm looking forward to more in the series.

People on the old NWN2 forums spoke well of it and I liked what I saw of the gameplay, with how combatants could actually grab/tackle/knock each other across 2d space instead of just touching target markers until one dies. A lot more dynamic feeling for a combat system, even if the class system is much simplified. So I never really got how people ragged on the shuffle so much-- maybe it's because they're relating it to a different kind of game than I am.

What got me in was the phrase "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate."

The only BioWare games I'd played at that point were that series and Neverwinter Nights. The BG series were my favourite CRPGs of all time, but I hated the original NWN campaign. (I only finished it out of my stubborn inability to leave games unfinished. Luckily the expansions were partially redeemed by a much better story and the presence of Deekin Scalesinger, although I still thought the engine and interface were poorly suited to D&D.) So when I heard BioWare were creating their own IP and making another epic fantasy game, I was definitely interested. That was a couple of years before the game came out, and the more I heard about it the more excited I got. Eventually it became the first video game I'd ever pre-ordered.

As for what kept me hooked - well, an hour into my first play through, I had tears running down my face over the end of the human noble origin story. That's when I knew they had me.

I fell in love with the DAO cast, which I expected given BioWare's excellent form with NPCs, but what I didn't expect was how much I fell in love with Thedas itself. I won't hijack the thread by listing all the things I love about the worldbuilding, but it turns out that it's full of stuff that hits all of my buttons.

Also, dwarves. I never really cared about dwarves until Dragon Age: Origins and Orzammar.

That's something else I forgot to mention. I'm an old school BW fan.

I didn't have a computer when the KotoR games game out. However, I played the BG series, Neverwinter Nights and NWN2 quite a bit. As with DA, the characters drew me back again and again.
