I was a wee lad who subscribed to gameinformer. There was like a solid year of great cover stories and Origins was one of them. I was instantly drawn in by the idea of different playable prologues. It kind of slipped from my mind for a while but then I got big into the hype in the year leading up to release. Joined and mostly lurked the forums (like I do to this day) because information landed here first, the devs talk to the fans, and it passed the time. Got the collector's edition on day 1 and the rest, as they say, is history.

The collector's edition strategy guide kind of had a mini lore section in the back that was a combination of codexes and dev interviews and it was really nifty. It was like The World of Thedas before it was a thing...good times.

On my 17th birthday my Mom picked it up for me because she thought I'd enjoy it, and it's been true love ever since.

I've always loved Bioware game, so it was a no brainer when both DA:O and DA2 came out. The story, roleplaying aspects, companions and the feeling of the world makes me come back for more.

My brother gave it to me, thinking I would like it. And he was right, the characters, the stories and the roleplaying were outstanding. But he didn't tell me that I could romance another girl. That was a nice surprise and gave the game a special place in my heart. First time was magicial. And I have stayed with the series since Origins and loved DA2 even more. Main reason is the characters.

I wasn't really interested in buying any more BioWare games after ME3 but when I saw that DA:O UE was $5 on Amazon last December, I figured that I might as well try it, since people were saying that it was more like the older BioWare games. I was supposed to play as dalish elf first but thought that the (unmodded) bare midriff armor looked silly so I went with city elf and installed some other mods. I got hooked and finished my first playthrough in 1 week.

Not planning on buying DA2. I didn't even finish the demo for that one. As for DAI, I might check it out depending on the feedback, but I definitely won't pre-order.

The single most important thing that drew me to DA games was the Romance option. I rarely actually played video games until I read that about Dragon Age Orgins included romanced but I had NO IDEA when I first started playing that there was a F/F possibility.

I am not lying when I say this, but when I played DAO and my Warden kissed Leliana for the first time (remember I had no idea it could actually happen (f/f)) I cried in happiness in real life. It was the first time that I had ever felt that my feelings and life situations were included in an RPG video game. I remember sitting in my chair and my hands were shaking, it was one of those moments when the clouds parted and the sun came down on me. It was a wonderful moment in time.

Ever since then I have been a fiercely loyal fan and actually was so inspired by it I have written two, 200 page fan-fiction novellas.

The only problem is, it literally ruined ALL other RPG games for me (ME withstanding).

This was really sweet, and quite moving <3 Bless you!

I have to confess, I was drawn to the franchise in a similar manner. Yes, those romances. Previous to DA I had been a primarily FPS gamer. I use the word "gamer" loosely because I did not even own my own console. I played on friends' consoles, meeting up for Halo parties or the occasional game of FIFA. But I've been playing video games since I was a kid; just, when you're a girl in the 80s, your brother gets the consoles and the video games, not you. But I played all his games.

I was playing DA2 with my brother-in-law when he called me one night and said "our" character had made out with the female pirate!! I was shocked. I started laughing with joy, even though I myself am not a lesbian. But it made me so happy for some reason. I couldn't believe a game would be so... wonderful like that. I started researching the game, and learned you could romance ANY character, regardless of gender. This really god me excited. To make a long story short, I finally bought my first (refurbished) xbox and also bought DA:O and DA2. I created male characters, and it felt so awesome and freeing to play as a man, I who am stuck in this female body. And I could romance anyone I wanted. It felt amazing. I also did play some female characters and romanced the women. That, too, felt amazing. And a GAME did this. A game! I created these amazing characters and went on these adventures and met these precious characters who were like real people to me. And I can't wait to do it all over again in DA:I!

So yep that's my DA story :wizard:

I didn't get Origins until about six months after it was released, and I hadn't really been aware of it. I had played the Baldur's Gate series (one of my favorites) as well as Neverwinter Nights, but I didn't follow game dev nearly as closely as I do now. That spring I was looking for a new RPG to play and I believe one of my friends recommended Dragon Age.

I think one of the things that most appealed to me was the idea aspect of choices. I had shifted my gaming from PC to console somewhat (especially for newer titles), and at that point in my mind, console RPGs were more of the classic "JRPG" design -- story and characters both being linear and defined. Whereas "western RPGs" like Baldur's Gate seemed to be more of a PC thing. So the idea of an RPG available on console, in which I could define a character and form a party and make choices? Sign me up!

I do remember that romance came up in the conversation with my friend, and that it intrigued me. That was largely just an extension of the choices thing (as I believe I had done at least a little bit of romance in BG, but I honestly don't remember it very well). But I was also curious because my conversations with him gave me the distinct impression that I could romance anyone in my party. Which is why I spent quite a bit of Origins waiting for Alistair to make a move on my male Warden. When I finally got the idea that he wasn't picking up what I was attempting to put down, I think I went online and confirmed it.

TL;DR: Friend recommended, loved the idea of a choice-driven RPG on consoles, got it, loved it. And now it and Mass Effect (which I played for the first time about a year ago) are probably my favorite game series ever.

DAO was the one of the first games I got after buying a PS3. The reason I got it was I'd been a fan of BW rpg's since Baldur's Gate. I had also seen several bits of info in game mags, sites, etc and saw the CG trailer.

I liked the idea of the origin backstory. In PnP games I always preferred playing the backstory instead of just typing up a lengthy bio. When I run a game that's the model I use more often than not.

I also read that it was a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. That sounded great to me. So did breaking from AD&D/D&D 3e based mechanics.

The approval system. I liked that the only morality system at play was how the world and my party members viewed my character. I liked that they would leave the party or even attack me if I offend them badly enough.

A sale impulse buy a few days after release, was truly not aware it before. not my first bioware game that being NW1, but it eventually drew me into mass effect and the others, and glad it did.

What drew me to Dragon Age: Origins? Well, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 did actually. I remember back when talk of Origins came up and trailers were released... They were all awful. This is what happens when you let EA do the marketing, you get awful misleading trailers with Marilyn Manson screaming your ears off. "THIS IS THE NEW ****!" he'd yell as I could not get out of there fast enough. I didn't, however, let myself be scared off that easily despite EA acquiring BioWare, a developer I had become very fond of alongside Koji-Pro at the time. 2009, when the game was released a short while after Arkham Asylum's release; A game I had immense fun with.. Well, as soon as I got started with the game I wasn't able to put it down again. The game was so immensely engrossing, with tons of content and its world felt so 'open' even though in long term it wasn't. I ended up romancing Leliana, one of my favorite female characters in a video game ever, and I thought it was incredibly neat to have such an option which ended up adding a bit more depth to the story too. Once I finished the game I ended up doing the Sacrifice because I didn't know about the other option. I was moved by that ending a lot but it didn't discourage me not to immediately start another playthrough and go through it again. I saw myself, only playing that one game for a half a year. I played a few games in between but at that time, Origins was all I was thinking about.

Regardless of how I feel about BioWare-EA today and the disappointment that was Dragon Age 2.
I will never forget the experience I had with their earlier games. Their so-called Golden-Age, I guess, and how much time I spent on Origins, its world and its characters. It's definitely in my list of Best Games of All Time which I'm still slowly working on. Origins is also what led me to this forum, where I met some good people which I'm ever thankful for meeting, so I guess I have a lot to thank this game for in the long run. I remain cautiously optimistic about the next Dragon Age but I'm not sure I see myself having enough time to play it when it releases later this year.

That's my story I'd say.

....my brother cameback from college with Orgins then threw the game at me

I was like "...." then he told me that the same people who made Baldur's gate also made this game xD Now...I remember playing baldur's gate just like it was yesterday..~I've always made a half-elf because in my young mind the half-elf looked cute (this is embarrassing X//D) I always named my characters names like "Shadowcat" and "Cheetah" and "Kitty" LOLOLOL. I played baldurs gate alot during elementary school..don't remember even doing homework but anyways-

My bro said that orgins was pretty good XD i was curious, and I never even heard of orgins (at this time I was'nt playing alot of games nor cared for em) so...I begin playing Orgins.....

.........
I named my first character Kitty...
xD in dragonage2 i named my first person Bam but ever since then I gotten creative with my names! :D honestly

heheh I love Bioware. before there was internet, there was bioware in my eyes. these guys are my childhood

Really enjoyed Oblivion, asked game store rep about something similar. I was talking gameplay (so Fallout: NV would've been a good bet) but he went with fantasy setting and showed me DAO.

WORTH IT. Some of the gameplay has been... iffy.... and definitely slow... but the characters, how they develop, their friendships and... enemyships?... and banter and interactions etc make it aaaaall worth it.

I learned about DAO from playing Neverwinter Nights and I used to be on the old Legacy boards when they (Bioware) announced the production of DAO.  I pre-ordered DAO from the start of it's release in 2009 and been playing this game since.  The vids and discussion on the old legacy boards had me hooked right from the start.  I'm a bookworm to begin with and being a character in an RPG such as Dragon Age was sort of right up my alley.

I love this game. The lore and depth of the world Bioware has created is very enjoyable especially being RPG based.  I really like the replay ability of the game.  The characters, the story lines, companion interaction with each other, the love stories, the monsters, good vs. evil and also the grey areas in making decisions. The Warden's stories and how they can all possibly end.  I really like the idea of having my decisions carry over from game to game and this is what keeps me coming back.  I do have DA2 and all of the DLC, books and comics for the entire franchise.  So yeah I'm totally addicted.

Sometimes you just feel for these characters.  Seeing Velanna's reaction to her sister walking off with The Architect is gut wrenching and seeing Ser Otto get killed was a complete shocker.  It's these types of moments that you want more and for the World of Thedas to open up even more.

So new announcements, the new book, and the fall of 2014 can't get here fast enough for me.

I always liked games I was raised with games..never really any really interesting story games though.
the first game that I played that just kinda blew my mind with how awesome it was was kotor I was like 12 though so thats kinda early and I played both of them and they were amazing.

Mass effect was the first game I got for my 360 and I got obsessed with that for tons of cool/depressing reasons Just cause of that Ill never call a mass effect game bad. ..even if  I know that I wouldnt have had the same reasons to like it at all if I played me2(which came out really soon after I got the first one) or me3 first I really wouldnt care about them enough at all.

A bit later I heard dragon age was kind read about it and it sounded really cool so I got Dragon Age 2 after it was out for a bit and pretty much fell in love with it more than Mass Effect.
Fantasy beats sci fi for me I guess.

Any game with customization or a story that you can kind of manipulate in whatever ways I tend to enjoy...Apparently in Inquisition there will be a lot of cool customization and choice options..thats just going off whatever I read/heard/watched so far.
I couldn't take my eyes or thoughts off of it as a whole if I really tried.

Oh man, I don't even remember because it's been so long. I think my mother picked it up shortly after it came out and I quite simply fell in love with it. I fell in love with Mass Effect as well shortly afterwards.

As for what keeps me coming back, I would have to say that it's the characters, the world and the story. Pretty much everything about the Dragon Age series.

I was thinking about this as I've been reading this thread.

So, when I finally got hooked on DA, I looked around to see if anyone I knew had played the game among my friends.  I was curious about rogues and I wanted an idea about the gameplay.

I should have known I wouldn't have look past my own family.

The first person to recommend a class for me to play in Origins? My dad, who had played the game first. He's turning 64 this year and thanks to him, I grew up on RPGs. He loved games like Dragon Warrior (boy, if that doesn't date me a bit!), the early Final Fantasy series, among so many others.

There isn't a time in my life where I lacked having a console growing up.  Started with the Atari 2400, then to the NES.  SNES-Playstation.  Our first computer was bought back in 1993 because my dad wanted to play games on it. No kidding; he saw footage for the game The 7th Guest and wanted to own it.  :D

We both loved Neverwinter Nights, and the BGs games a lot.  We both enjoy RTS games...even though I suck at them.   At one point, we were in the same raiding guild in WoW, playing rogues together  (along with my mom, who was a paladin and my husband, who was a lock.)

My mom and I are close, but my love of RPG, as well as gaming in general, comes from my dad. Anytime I go over there, he shows me the latest game he's picked up on Steam and generally knows about what games are coming out before I do. And I know when Inquisition comes out, we'll be making my mom and brother's eyes roll as we gush about the game for at least 20 minutes non stop.

I think it was 2010. My brother said 'play this, you'll like it, you can play as a woman'. I liked it so much I never gave the game back.

Afterwards I looked up bioware and immediately got ME 1+2

DA:O is still my favourite game to this day. I love the characters and setting.
