Having a more personal storyline would be perfectly fine by me. Though I agree on the fact that ME is very much a game about the universe as a whole, a personal quest might very well get you to travel all over the galaxy in order to gain what you're after. Trying to outplay the ME trilogy's story by making it even more grander would be a bit of a mistake IMO.
I think it'll be grander, but only in a certain way. As in, we're not going to get the 'everyone united in one spot to smash against a monolithic enemy force', if I'm right.
The grander will be more in terms of scope and like you said, the universe. Exploration and depth of meaning behind things might be the deal, not relative linearity and a more classic journey structure.

However, I'm still with you Waffle. I think it's very possible that there's many smaller character stories too.
The thing I'm nearly sure of, is that we're not getting the direct war story.

I'm sorry, I don't see a small *scale* major plotline happening.
I know.
I'm terrified it's going to look like Battlefield more then anything. Especially after what they did to NFS on the Frostbite engine. Maybe they could stretch that C-SEC duristiction across the whole of council space, if they insist on this big galaxy wide adventure?

Considering that ME2-3 were Bioware's 'Gears of War's, yet were still enjoyable overall...
I think I can deal.
(Me in MP: Everyone, get in mah biotic bubble for buffs! You!; use carnage on that building to destroy it!)
I bring this up a bit and I know it's been denied, but the Mass Shift rumor had a new Shadow Broker actually rule 'Council Space'. lol

To you perhaps it becomes underwhelming, but there are so many examples in today's media where being the hero has been successful throughout several instalments.JonathonPR wrote...

A single system can have huge variety. Every action becomes that much more important. Imagine having to establish a colony in a hostile part of the galaxy. Not having the resources to effect much beyond. Decisions are not moralistic with repercussions later that will reverberate through the galaxy. It is more of what do you do when you anger the group that made sure that you got shipments of food while your colony is being established. what kind of abuses would you allow them to inflict on your people to ensure that there will be enough food. Who would you make deals with to get out of that arrangement. If you are not the leader do you advise them, pressure them, put someone else in power, or take it for you self.
A lot of people like being a hero, through for instance a video game or seeing one in the movies, something larger than life, defying all the odds. Shepard was that hero.
The first trilogy set the standard, if they decided to go with your idea I doubt they'd sell a lot of copies.
Not saying your idea couldn't work, but I don't think it would work well given the history of the ME games.
It's too much focussed on things that weren't present in the first 3 games.
Being a larger than life hero can scale greatly from John McClane and Snake Plissken to Superman and Goku. People can get burned out on certian scales and become tired of what for some becomes repetative and predictable. It becomes underwhelming. http://youtu.be/wAlK9ojduv4?t=2m39s :innocent:
Action movies, loads of them, the Halo series, Metal Gear, Uncharted etc. Your concept is more micro oriented, if I phrased that correctly. It focusses on smaller things, which were present in side missions actually, if you lookt at ME2, to an extent.

No, I dont want a new story that lives in the shadows of sheps story. Less important stories are never as good or meaningful as the more important stories. If the lesser story(ME4) is better then the more important story(ME1-ME3) then it all falls apart and is immersion braking. for this reason ME4 MUST NOT live in the shadows of ME1-ME3... It never ends well, just look at star wars for an example!
What is really wrong with saving the galaxy again?...there are many stories out there and you want to pick one with little to do with anything? Remember that it does not have to be bigger then the reapers it just has to be as significant in the status and importants of the galaxy.
If you want a lame story then thats you i guess.
Next time use better example because Star Wars expanded universe is full of great stories with much smaller scale, f.e. popular comics with Boba Fett. There are dozens cases when expanded universe works with much smaller scale and more personal stories and it worked very well.
That it never ends well for you is one thing, but it definitely not set a rule for everyone.
I know, i read the star wars books my favs are Heir to the Empire trilogy( one of the first ones). My example was that Episodes 1,2 and 3 are living in the shadows of 4, 5 and 6 the entire time. I dont want ME4 to live in the same shadow.
