You sure they'd pick a king? They may pick a President.

He has a wife. He married Anora!

And anyone who thinks my particular playthrough is not canon can swivel!

So there!

Your canon is your canon and does not represent anyone else's canon. Some people have Anora ruling alone too.
Not everyone plays the game your way.

He says he either doesn't want a pretend wife...to a romanced warden. Or that he wants to be the one to chose who he marries...maybe he just hasn't found one he likes.

It doesn't matter if he likes the girl or not. Personally yes, it does. But he is running a kingdom now and needs heirs. Wed, bed and leave her with child. But GW's are kind of unable to do so, so I guess it's fair in that light, still, a marriage would go a long way to mend the marring of Ferelden.

@ Melca36

Thanks for this.  I haven't imported my US warden into DA2 to see what happened.

I wish there was a way for Alistair and Leliana to hook up in Origins. Then Morrigan and my Warden could go to Chilis on double dates with them and order Margeritas.

I never made an Alistair who was married to anyone. I only have 3 different saves.

1. King Alistair. Rules Alone

2. Warden Alistair. Anora rules alone

3. Warden Alistair. I'm king and I married Anora, with Leliana mistress, and Morrigan impregnated. (This was my womanizer Warden)

Anyway, the one I consider my "main" save is King Alistair who rules alone. I just think he should marry who he wants, otherwise he's going to end up confused about who he loves and ends up like Maric - humping anything with a vagina.

It is to appease the fangirls, Alistair can't get married without the player's permission, if he did then it would undermine his love for the player character, Alistair must have eyes for me alone and no other woman otherwise I would rather see him get served up to the Archdemon while our love is still true!

This does make some sense.

I set Alistair up to rule alone specifically because Anora is ~30 and probably barren and he already has the odds stacked against him to conceive. I hope he at least has taken a few mistresses since Origins. He has to have lost his virginity by Inquisition.

Whatever the case, no matter which scenario you take in the Landsmeet it seems like the story demands another Ferelden succession crisis in the future.

Title claims seem to work in a strange way in the DA universe, since Eamon mentioned he and Teagan have a claim on the throne. Maybe I've played too much CK2 but that makes absolutely no sense to me. Using that same logic, if a female Cousland married Alistair then the kingdom should fall to Fergus and his heirs, and at least Fergus seemed more willing to do his duty and start a new family. Fergus should also be the highest ranking noble in all of Ferelden in any event. If you're a Cousland and ask for a title, then Gwaren should also pass to Fergus.

The marrying for love theme (see Fergus+Oriana, Eamon+Isolde, Teagan+peasant) is probably the dumbest aspects of DA's depiction of nobility. There must be some suitable noblewoman who Alistair could marry. At the very least there should be some outrage among the nobility if Alistair isn't married, since he's going to leave the country in crisis if he dies.

Well in my saves he either married a Cousland or stayed a Warden.

I would like to think that Alistair does get married at some point. I like the guy and he seems like somebody who would prefer not to be alone, so he might pine for my warden (if I die or am otherwise involved) but would realize that he should marry and try for children. However, he's not stupid. He knows that the chances of becoming a father are slim so I think he'll be looking for possible heirs among the other nobles in any case. A child who would be his ward and whom he would sort of adopt and train.

Fergus Cousland is alive, I don't see any reason why he would only survive if you play as a human noble warden. Bryce Cousland was mentioned as a possible alternative to Cailan after Maric was declared dead. Probably why old grumpy made sure to marry Anora and Cailan right quick. Fergus is also still a young man, probably the same age as Cailan. He could certainly act as regent until his child (or whoever the ward is) is grown. Teagan is younger than Eamon and could act as co-regent or something.

The Landsmeet doesn't have to select the ward as king, but there might be less trouble if Alistair at least has somebody in training to take over who will also have some guidance from respected, mature men.

That's one possibility I see. I really don't want to see him married to Anora, though. Just . . . no.

I just assumed that he was married when I met up with him in DA2.  I mean he was pretty certain that marrying someone (to try to get an heir or whatever) was on the cards for his future in DAO, so I figured that's pretty much what he did.  I haven't read anything referring to him as single in the 'King Alistair' versions.  Maybe I missed it?  It seems odd that he wouldn't marry if he was King, a real waste of possible political alliances and potential mini-Alistairs.

Speaking as an Alistair fangirl, personally I'd like him, as King, to be able to marry someone other than Cousland or Anora.  In cases where he dumped my Warden after becoming King, it had better have been for an actual reason!  The thought of them ending their relationship so that Alistair can marry someone and have an heir... only for him to never actually do that... is more than a little infuriating.  It's not that I want him to be in some unhappy, loveless marriage with a fertile harridan - it's more that, of all the women out there, there has to be some (non-Warden, non-Anora) candidate for queen of Ferelden who could at least get on with Alistair.  Even if they don't fall in love, they could have a positive, family-oriented relationship.  But for Alistair to give up the Warden for nothing...?  What kind of an Alistair fangirl would I be if I wanted that?

Finding a suitable candidate for queen of Ferelden is a tougher job than it seems. Especially with the amount of gold-diggers. I imagen there being a lot of women simply out there for the wealth.

It might be even MORE difficult that the Warden has set the bar really high for him; after all why settle for something less? :P

Not to mention that I have no hard time imagening that if Alistair truly ditched the Warden, this could be to make "room" to truly love his Queen. And even if he was capable of loving 2 women at the same time, he probably thought of it as cheating, because apparently polygamy = bad in Thedas. Or non-existant. Not enough drama if everyone could love everyone at the same time. Anyway; considering his duty as a King comes before his personal desires when he is unhardened, your Warden will have to bite the dust (though Alistair himself obviously also has to bite the dust).

And besides, think of it; when the Warden manages to find another love but Alistair is stuck being a lonely king (assuming he doesn't want to be a lonely king), who got the short end of the stick? :P

The Landsmeet keeps sending him suitors they know he'll reject so that when he's gone they can put a Cousland on the throne.

This exactly! And in addition - since my warden is dead, the idea of him being sad, lonely and childless for the rest of his life is exactly the opposite of what my warden would have wanted for him. Seven years is plenty of mourning time, I'd like to see him find a queen, it would be silly to think of this as disrespectful to the memory of the romanced warden.
