As for reasons I prefere Liara and Samara's romance? I guess because I think from a storytelling perspective I appreciate the drama in ME2-maingame between Liara and Shepard, it is the dark second chapter so I think it suits for the hero to be at their lowest by them having seemingly lost their relationship with somebody they loved and cared for, and if you add the attempted romance with Samara, trying to move on with someone else and not have that work out either. It adds to the sense that Shepard is truly isolated and alone on some level. And having Shepard get something on with one of the vanilla ME2 romances betrays that sense of isolation that ME2 should have and thereby undermines the whole "dark second act".

Ooooh, now that's a lovely bit of drama. I approve.
What about Lair of the Shadow Broker, and the possibility of restarting the romance with Liara?

Garrus: Before I even started Mass Effect 2(Because peasetree did not have Mass Effect 1 yet), I wanted to romance an alien, and since I met Garrus first, I kinda took a liking to him instead. I kinda liked his bad boy attitude although he is a quite reckless and hasty, I thought he was perfect for my FemShep. Really liked that ME3 actually showed more intimacy between the two other than talking and stuff.
Liara: Since I didn't romance her from one and carrying it throughout the Trilogy, her romance was quite dull to me, but because she can be taken on missions and does have a lot of scenes it doesn't feel too lonely, but the romance does feel often boring since she's very conservative.
Traynor: I think since the romance scene was 10x better and the second one before the Cerberus HQ is as disappoint as Garrus and Tali's, she's quite alright. Some dialogues with her change due to romance, but not a lot of changes.
*Note: Liara and Traynor romance were romances during a bad playthrough, and so, I didn't explore it to its full potential.

The best is obviously Kelly Chambers. She's so good that BioWare decided not to grant the Paramore achievement in ME2 to her relationship because everyone would pick her instead.

That's like some reverse pyschology or something. The people who DO pick her, get that special experience!

That works for me because I do not consider LOTSB or Arrival to be part of the ME2 maingame, they are not truly part of the "dark second act", they are the middle between 2 and 3.
LOTSB post-ending is Shepard coming back from the suicide mission, having expected to die (and have indeed lost people), and find out that now he has been given a second chance to correct what went wrong on Illium and finally get some closure and perhaps some happiness.
Just the way I saw it.

Not sure who for my second playthrough. Jack, Tali, Ashley, and Miranda are all interesting enough. Leaning toward Jack because of her more complex character. I would hope Ashley's romance adds some to her character development in ME3, which is pretty lacking otherwise.

Yeah, Liara, end of story. But since Liara's otherwise occupied during ME2, who's to say that Shepard can't get a little lovin' on the side from, say, Miranda? I mean, they are going on a suicide mission- and who can resist dat @ss?dragonflight288 wrote...
Seeing as how the forum for characters and love interests is closed for whatever reason, I thought I'd open this up.
I have a male Shepard that I'm currently playing, currently replaying ME2. I romanced Liara in ME1 and I SOOOOOO want to remain loyal, but I just love both Miranda and Tali and quite frankly, I stopped playing a bit as I can't make up my mind because I like all three of them.
Now this thread isn't about these three in particular, but it got me thinking, who is the best romance interest for you in your playthrough? Now this is strictly subjective so what's right for me won't necessarily be what's right for you as we have different personalities and different perspectives. But I figured when we talk about our Love Interests in the Mass Effect saga, we could also talk about WHY we like these characters.
Liara: For me, Liara is smart, which is what initially attracted me to her in ME, add in the cute awkwardness of her being kind of socially impaired. But then in ME2, she became a lot tougher, is more than capable of handling whatever violence she feels she needs to do, but is still emotionally vulnerable as we see at the end of Lair of the Shadow Broker when she practically breaks down now that her revenge was complete.
I sort of see her as the 'canon' love interest overall, but I really do like her for her.
Miranda: This woman has drive. She starts off believing she has to find out how others would use her, from her father to Cerberus so she can feel like she fits in the world because of how she was 'born', so to speak, with her being genetically altered and created without ever having a mother.
She is strong, smart, highly competent, and I absolutely love it if you take her with you to fight the human Reaper, decide to destroy the base (if she's loyal) and how the Illusive Man tries to order her to stop you from destroying the base and she pretty much tells him to shut up, and hangs up on him. It also helps that she has a lot of the features that I am attracted to in real life as well, not just in looks but also her ambition and her drive. But most of all, her love of her family and how far she'll go to protect her sister.
Tali: I always liked Tali, and but what really got me was during her loyalty mission and how she faces treason, and she gets on Shepard about how much she simply cannot experience because her immune system is so weak, and my heart went out to her, and I wanted my Shepard to be with her.
That, and the scene in ME3 where she's drunk and romancing Shepard is really hilarious.
But yeah, between these three, I simply cannot choose one.
I'm interested in your guys's thoughts, who of the many romance interests do you guys like and why you like them? And whether or not you agree with the three I like.
All that said, I like Tali's romance arc as well, she would probably be a close second.

Adept paragon female Shepard romanced only Garrus. I killed Kaidan in ME1 and turned down Liara to avoid romance. Romancing Garrus in ME2 actually did not feel too thrilling, but I enjoyed both his recruitment and loyalty mission very much. The romance aside I do like how strong his relationship grows with Shepard in ME2. And in ME3 this relationship has finally progressed into such a deep and beautiful love. I need not say much but claim it's perfection.
Soldier renegade male Shepard romanced only Liara. Liara romance in ME1 doesn't feel too interesting or special to me. But the entire Lair of Shadow Broker mission executes the Liara romance so well that completely changed my perspective on her character and romance arc. In ME3 it's more like a hit or miss, most of the scenes are fine but it's totally unreal when she called me a friend without referring to the relationship in several scenes. So it's overall more flawed compared to Garrus romance IMO. I need to mention that I do like the renegade Shepard/Liara dynamic, quite similar to the dynamic of Liara's parents if you think about it.
Engineer paragon male Shepard romance only Tali. Similar to the first one, killed Ahsley and turned down Liara in ME1 to avoide romance. I like Tali romance in ME2 more than Garrus romance in ME2, the way she says how she's watched your actions and fell for you is very powerful to me. This relationship progressed rather well in ME3 as well, you just have to be VERY patient to wait for it. It felt a bit short compared to Garrus romance due to Tali's late entrance. But overall quite perfect as well. I also need to mention here I like the "idea" of having a picture. It's good for roleplay reason since you can check on it every time you enter your quarter. The content itself is meh.
But despite what I say about each of them I really enjoyed them about equally. In the end what makes these 3 special to me is how they are there from the beginning, and with you till the end. They are the 3 most loyal veterans in this trilogy. I can imagine my Shepard appreciating other characters, but falling in love? It can only happen with these 3.

Reading comprehension for the win:Seeing as how the forum for characters and love interests is closed for whatever reason, I thought I'd open this up.
This forum is now closed.
There is entirely too much fighting, rule breakage and petty bickering in the threads here. While we appreciate you like the characters the behavior of many people in this forum is against the rules and spirit we want on the BSN.
