What ME4 needs is Shepard's wounded body to leap up from the rubble pile, all Hulk like, and straight into outer space. He/she should regenerate their body as they rise through the atmosphere, and the end of their super leap should place them right on board the bridge of the new Normandy!
You know, the reverse of the opening of ME2. It will be epic!
Sounds funny but as uncreative as it could get.
Seriously though, Shepard got a whole trilogy of his own, his squad got a whole trilogy, the Normandy got a whole trilogy, the reapers, cerberus, the genophage, the geth-quarian conflict, the prothean legacy got a whole trilogy of their own. These conflicts and problems are all solved one way or another, and Shepard and co. fulfilled their roles in the history of the ME-universe. Time to let them go.
It's high time to move on and see the ME-universe from another perspective, with a different main character, with completely new faces, with a new ship (if we have our own ship) and with a new type of conflict (not necessarily a galaxy-wide threat), and of course tons of new explorable planets, places, even species, and lore.
The game can have a few references here and where to the original trilogy, but it should not be a tribute or nostalgia game. It should stand on its own and be memorable for what it has to offer.

That was just the thing I was wondering. Apparently there is a lot of replay value in playing the trilogy to this day after so many years, yet a lot of people are done with/tired of Shepard. I find that a bit contradictory. Was curious about that.Ultim Asari wrote...

Interesting, most people are quite done with Shepard then it seems.
I haven't touched the games after the disappointing ending of ME3 and knowing that was Shepard's last journey, but apparently a lot of people still play the games despite not wanting Shepard back.
I could be assuming too much though.
I love Shepard, but I don't want to play her in 10 different games. She had a fantastic run that has a lot of replay value. But it is time for the next generation.
On another note, as I still don't get the quoting here:
I do think including LI's is one of the trademarks of BW games and should be incluced in future games, it does add to the gameplay. Role playing games such as ME rely on immersion and LI's do add a great deal to that.
A well written, intricate story with less 1 and 2 dimensional and more three dimensional believable characters, and a better choices and consequences system would add a lot more to the immersion than any LI-option, in my opinion.

As for having Shepard in the game but not as a playable character but as the ruler of the galaxy or an Admiral. No thanks, that would just be Destroy fan, fanservice. Which would alienate both Control and Synthesis fans. Better to just wash Shepard away and leave it. Just the same as why Shepard was never called by a first name, noone would talk about how Shepard finaly died because that's just disrespectful. +1 to Dr Chakwas.

It would be nice to have familiar places/faces, team up with one or two old squadmates for a few missions (maybe Samara, Grunt or Miranda), and maybe play one mission as Shepard when things got ugly and you need to totally kick ass).
Miranda: I got to see dat ass again.

Nothing about Shepard is irreplaceable with ... another generic, blank-slate RPG protagonist.
... aside from maybe the headcanon that fans have associated with him and gotten attached to...

But please stop it with the "let them rest" thing, they're a video game character for Pete's sake.

I have a theory that people who think Shepard is so bland are the same people who use crappy custom faces. When I see these faces on Youtube, they always look more cold and bland for some reason. I think there's more character in default Sheploo.
I use Sheploo and think Shepard is bland. The only game that attempted to give his lines any character was ME3.

I forgot. You have to be Renegade in ME2 as well. Paragon sucks balls.. personality wise.
edit: Seriously.

A pity the character we were given was so limited and binary.
And I use Sheploo too. But mainly because my skill wit hthe character creator was so poor that attempts to customize just made Shepard look like an escaped lab experiement.
Unforseen side effects of the Lazarus Project?

Yeah Meer got a lot better in ME3. ME2 Femshep Renegade isn't too bad delivery-wise.

I don't see how that could be.... it's not like there's a different set of animations for Sheploo.

I usually love creating custom characters, but ME is one of those titles I gave up on.
You should try the face-code I use... for all three games. I think it is just as good as the modeled face animation-wise, and it looks a a lot more badass. You can make a few additional touches to it, if you feel like it.

Thanks Bioware for killing my retirement. Ah well. Let her rest in peace. After all she's done and been through by heaven she's earned it.
Besides this opens up a whole lot more potential to make another very powerful character who could be compelling and interesting and not Shepard. No one will ever replace her but that doesn't mean I can't like them just as much.
Just don't give me another Hawke. It had potential but I want something important to do, maybe not saving all sentient life in the galaxy from Reapers but something a little more moving than "restoring my family's honor" oh and yeah that thing between the mages and Templars is important, too. (Which is how it felt to me, like that was just an afterthought to Hawke amidst her own ambitions.)
And I DO NOT want to see Liara or Garrus or Wrex or Tali or any of them just showing up and joining up with someone else. I'd really rather they didn't show up as cameos or anything either. It just reminds me that this isn't Shepard and makes me think of how things might have been and I would begin to resent my new character because, as I said, you cannot replace Commander Shepard.

I haven't problem with mentions about old squad but I would personally prefer same way they used in DE:HR, where you just found mails mentioning Joseph Menderley, DeBeers and Bob Page and where only real cameo was young Tracer Tong.
But to be honest there is one (prequel) cameo I would love to see - mission on that old space station full of mercenaries and smugglers, where Wrex battled with Aria. Running around station shivering with explosions and full of sign of previous destruction and just ocassional taunting voices of Wrex and Aria coming from station communication systems.... this could be epic.

Just to add, if the next game flops at all, and is significantly less commercially successful, you will see Shepard return in ME5, count on it.
EA will pull rank and say Bioware bring back the star who made this series.
So i actually think they will one day return with Shepard and say the Destruction ending, and he lives scenario is chosen as canon.
Bioware completely "Halo 3'ed" Mass Effect 3's Destroy Ending. It's clearly a fail safe if the next ME-games flops.
