over the years of enjoying the universe and characters that Bioware have created I've grown attached to the Mass effect characters, feeling like I have bonded and learned from them. The Citadel dlc certainly enhanced this feeling, and now that the series is over, I find myself missing the Normandy crew greatly. There will be more Mass effect games, and I imagine I'll love the new characters too,  but I can't help feeling that the shadow of the previous crew will linger much longer, or will never fade.  It is a strange feeling to think of fictional characters as friends and to actually feel a sadness and miss them; does anyone else feel this?

I applaud Bioware and the voice-actors on creating these amazing,  likeable and memorable characters; I reiterate this fact, I will miss them.

Sure I get what you are saying OP but it is good for the franchise to branch out to new charactets and storylines. Having been with some of these guys for 3 games makes it tough to see them go but it is necessary

I think a short lifespan for such iconic characters is a shame. I'm better off getting more invested in a show (Buffy, Trek) or comics (X-Men, Avengers, etc). As much as I like ME's characters, I barely got to know them. Except a couple of them.

Yeah. I'm actually playing the Citadel DLC for the first time right now (I made it as far as the Council Archives yesterday) and it does feel a little bit like saying goodbye. No more new content for my favorite character after this, no more new content for any of them.

It couldn't continue forever, I guess, although the comparison to some comic book characters that have been around for a very long time isn't one I had thought of until now. StreetMagic is right - I feel like there were more stories that could have been told with these characters.

I'll miss them, but I'm glad their story is over. Too many characters' stories just get dragged endlessly (see comic books). It's better to have the story come to a close

And yet people still read those comics - and will continue to do so. It's not like everyone has gotten tired of it. Just speak for yourself, please.

Not everyone has, but there have been people that have.

I am glad they are moving from Shepard and crew, for I don't think a new team could bring the same feel to the game even if the existing characters were part of it and it could the run into the same problem as Halo 4 or what might happen now with Gears or War moving to a different studio.  You mentioned Buffy, but I rather have fond memories of Shepard and crew and not get frustrated at the game the way I did with the Buffy series over the last two seasons when something felt wrong.

They're very enduring though. Hell, Batman is 75 years old. New fans gained generation after generation. Most writers would give their right nut to create something so timeless and indispensable.

Not that Mass Effect needs to even be a fraction that long though. But to act like being around for so long is a fault is unfair. I think it's to be admired.

I hear you. You're not going to find many Jack fans who wish to "move on". Hell, we're still waiting for it to start.

I do agree, but I think there are big differences between comics and video games too, for when you have a different artist or writer get attached to a comic book and there are changes in the style I don't see the same level of negativity aimed at them that I do with games.  There will be complaints, but I don't see the same level of intensity towards it.  If I believe that they could make changes like a comic could when they go to a new team I might not be as against it as I am now, but I don't want to see months of complaints because the characters aren't the same as before.

I see what you mean. Don't know why it's different, but I see it.

Batman's a good example. Just review his complete story and you can see how utterly ridiculous it has become in the comics. Jason Todd is back, but not(?), Bruce Wayne's spirit is shot back in time....  I don't want that for Shepard. I much rather Hitman, Watchmen, or V for Vendetta, because they ended.

You're picking Alan Moore, who has voiced complaints against serialized stories (I believe). Stories like the above weren't meant to be fleshed out worlds he would revisit again (although he's done that too, with stuff like Swamp Thing and Hellblazer).

I think Mass Effect can go either way. There were specific themes they wanted to touch on and be done with -- but at the same time, it IS a world worth revisiting. It's not just about it's themes like V or Watchmen.

I know what you mean, and I think it's perfectly normal too feel a sadness when you'll no longer see the characters you've come to enjoy as long as you can recognize that they're just fictional characters. I know for a fact when I get done with ME3 I'm going to miss my adventures with Garrus and Tali.

Though I much rather their stories end with Shepard than to have them cameo in other Mass Effect games like what they did in DA2. Something about a character you've come to know that acknowledges you as the current avatar you're personifying just feels wrong and immersion breaking to me.

Ok? Just jam your ME1/2/3 disk back in your console and enjoy them all over again.

I can't miss people I barely knew, I don't even know the LI my Shepard romanced birthday ffs.
In fact, can anyone even tell me the birth date of any of the LI's in the series?

That works too. At least until ME3 and ME2 characters got thrown under the bus.

And Liara (pre LOTSB at least)

Arguably Wrex too.

Pre LOTSB doesn't matter anymore. The whole nature of the series changed with LotSB. That character has a lot of impact and presence, both in story and outside of the game in the writers' minds. Most fans would be lucky if they had even half of that support. Hell, everything about ME2, both it's plot and characters, has been rendered meaningless after LotSB. The DLC turns out to be the only thing that carries the new story (Liara and the Crucible).

Yeah, real productive. Insulting people isn't going to win anyone over. You don't have any better way for me to see your point of view? Or do you actually expect me to kiss your ass and suck up... just "because"?

Seriously. Ask yourself this. Take a second and ask yourself if this is going to work. I'll be here when you're done. ;)
