To put into another perspective, the MG(S) games average about 25 hours when you want to explore it all, yet there is very little we know about recurring characters like Solid Snake or Ocelot or their true motives until near the end. At best in both series we get to know them as soldiers or their demeanor. Citadel DLC shouldn't count due to its baffling and silly nature. There can be many stories to tell while keeping the series fresh. Adding new characters can go a long way with it.GimmeDaGun wrote...

I think a short lifespan for such iconic characters is a shame. I'm better off getting more invested in a show (Buffy, Trek) or comics (X-Men, Avengers, etc). As much as I like ME's characters, I barely got to know them. Except a couple of them.
Short? We're talking about a trilogy with 35-65-hour-long installments. I wouldn't call that short. Actually I got bored of these characters by the end of the series. My last trilogy-run (with all dlcs installed) took almost 180 hours. It's hight time for something totally new.
Again, I don't mind the change, in fact I almost favor it if only to get the bad taste out of my mouth from ME3's shortcomings.
