I think a short lifespan for such iconic characters is a shame. I'm better off getting more invested in a show (Buffy, Trek) or comics (X-Men, Avengers, etc). As much as I like ME's characters, I barely got to know them. Except a couple of them.

Short? We're talking about a trilogy with 35-65-hour-long installments. I wouldn't call that short. Actually I got bored of these characters by the end of the series. My last trilogy-run (with all dlcs installed) took almost 180 hours. It's hight time for something totally new.

To put into another perspective, the MG(S) games average about 25 hours when you want to explore it all, yet there is very little we know about recurring characters like Solid Snake or Ocelot or their true motives until near the end. At best in both series we get to know them as soldiers or their demeanor. Citadel DLC shouldn't count due to its baffling and silly nature. There can be many stories to tell while keeping the series fresh. Adding new characters can go a long way with it.

Again, I don't mind the change, in fact I almost favor it if only to get the bad taste out of my mouth from ME3's shortcomings.

Personally I hope they don't screw up the next ME. It is sad to see these characters god but so was how the game ended. I trust in BioWare that they will make the characters in the next ME just as connecting(?).

OP you can always replay the trilogy again if you want. I think its time for some fresh characters in the next ME game, since I'd hate to see Shepard and co. become stale.

I am now replaying the trilogy for like a sixth time, maybe seventh and I have to say ME1 and ME2 are not as exciting anymore. I have only played through the ME3 for two times so that should be good.  But any game you play for several times, unless you can do something radically different then any game would become a bit stale.

I'll always miss the Normandy crew, Tali, Wrex, and Grunt have a special place in my memory. The crew really did feel like a family.

That said, I'm excited to see what new characters and squadmates there will be. Maybe there will be a small cameo or two, that'd be nice. Better to have fond memories of these characters than to see them dragged out and grow resentful of them.

It really is an issue of how far into the future the game would be set, the only ones with lifespans past 100 years are Liara and Grunt, maybe Wrex and Samara. others have lifespans that would not last them past 2300.

i agree. the trilogy was amazing and the characters were great. being able to bond with something like that (even when its not real) is a sign of true significance, at least in my opinion.

I think that replaying the games (or overdoing anything really) can get you desensitized to the experience. so I plan on playing the series for the 4th (and last) time here in a bit, and after that hopefully the next ME will come around and I can start on that.....but I will never forget the original mass effect

and im not really sure about the next mass effect, I mean I trust bioware but I don't want to get burned again. they could do so much with the next mass effect, and yet they could screw so much up too...I guess we will have to wait and see if they can make another series as sublime as the original (minus a few things which on the overall scale didn't really detract enough from the games to make them anything but great)

Excactly, those would be the most likely candidates, and out of them, most likely Liara, as she can't die in the first trilogy. She essentially acts as a living time capsule for the crew and the war, and I think it'd be really cool and emotionally powerful to meet her while playing as a new character and see how she's lived after the war. Maybe even a character born -after- the war, having had no personal experience with that struggle, meeting someone so personally involved in the fight against the Reapers.

At least on the face of things.

There could, of course, be things like cryostasis/other types of stasis, or some character being uploaded into a computer, or whatever other crazy things writers could some up with.

But in terms of more natural lifespans for more major characters, yeah, there's only Liara, Grunt, Wrex-maybe, Samara, EDI.... uh... that's it.

In my head I am using destroy as the canon ending so EDI is under huge question. Camoes of the old characters are fine, and if done tastefully would be really nice however the issue has to be threaded lightly since if they make too many cameos or even include them as permanent squaddies it might be kinda awkward, playing basically Shepard Version 2.0 in the year 2525(or something). if shepards story is done then his/hers squad should also be laid to rest and just at most given some nice cameo, like shepard himself/herself.

If there are any permanent squaddies, I'd only put put the most basic ME3 ones as possible. Liara (most likely), EDI (we'll see), James (prob only if shortly after ME3 events).

There's that Mass Shift rumorthatisn'trealorisit where only Liara joins as Matriarch and EDI is present in the main story but not as squaddie. James went off to be a N7 elsewhere before the main story, I guess. And there's Wrex's granddaughter but that would mean that instead of Destroy/Red, Shift would be probably presume most major Control/Blue/Paragon choices were made in the main story (like curing the Genophage). A kinda flip of Mass Effect's presumption (I'm just talking default new files here, not imported ones) that Red/Renegade things were mostly done.

Here I go making reckless speculation again :P

Oh no no not the first time its just that with the vocal minority bad talking the game last time around it was pretty hard for me to enjoy it, so its been a bit of a two year journey trying to beat this game the way I've wanted to. And no I haven't played this playthrough with dlc though I do intend to. Really like your quote in your signature btw

I was talking about the quote BTW. Parts of London FOB felt lackluster, but most of the script was definitely not.

Ya I loved the writing in the scenes there ~ Jack's and Miranda's, really liked them

I just wish that they made the in-game model of Miranda the copy of the actress who provided her face and voice. After watching that one tv show the two images are jarring in my head.
