Non-import game with Thane in ending montage?

Despite having three ME2 saves ready for import, my first ME3 game was a fresh non-import (I wanted to see what choices the 'default' Shepard had made).

Thane's name is on the memorial wall the first time you see it, since he apparently died in ME2's suicide mission (Jack, Wrex and Ashley were also on the wall).  No Thane also means no Kolyat; in fact, as far as I can recall, I never saw a single Drell in the entire playthrough.

Despite this, in the extended cut montage of people who have died, there's Thane!  Except a fresh player would not only have no idea who he is, they wouldn't even recognize his species.

Did anyone else get this on a non-import game?  It was a bit puzzling to me.

My first playthrough of ME3 was without a save game and when I played with an ME1-ME2 save game i really noticed way more content. In fact in the first playthorugh as a new chracter in ME3 i noticed the only person i could call at the end through the comms technician was Jacob! I dont know why either.

And i never saw Thane in my new player start ME3 game, nor Samara, nor Jack, nor Wrex.

@jetblack01: you mean you didn't see Thane in the ending montage?

Yes, Thane and Jack are considered killed on the Suicide Mission. Wrex died in ME1, Samara was killed by Morinth. Legion and Grunt were handed over to Cerberus. So there was nobody left alive except Jacob for jetblack01, since Mordin and Miranda can die in ME3.

The default ME3 start is not achievable in ME2 -- if you recruit no optional characters and do no Normandy upgrades and no loyalty missions, the best possible result, IIRC, is that only Garrus survives.

That was part of what made the ending montage so puzzling, beyond the question of why I saw Thane at all.  Why, having seen Thane who died in the suicide mission, did I not see Jack who also died in the suicide mission?  I shouldn't have seen either of them, but if they're going to show me one, then why not both?  So weird.
