Mass Effect 2 and 3, while great games, got way too cozy and warm compared to the first game. I miss going to an uncharted world and hearing nothing but the strong wind with mountains and stars as far as the eye could see. In 2 and 3 you've pretty much got people around you, who talks a lot, at all times which really takes away from this lonely, cold and space-y feeling.

Bioware, you've now explored the whole action set-piece thing with 2 and 3. Us, the players, have now seen what the Mass Effect series is capable of in this department (which was pretty sweet). But please, can we scale it back a little for the next one? Bring back the feeling of being a single person in a huge galactic community and it actually feeling that way?

That'd be nice.

"Cold and lonely". I know what you mean. If they do bring it back though, I'd like more things to do on the planets (besides the minerals and artifact puzzle game).

Yeah. More stuff like the pyramids and abandoned bases where it's up to the player to figure out what happened. There's plenty of stuff that can be done, without going overboard with bigger-than-life setpieces and such.

This I agree with, but not because of your first point, I found those unexplored planets to be terribly executed.

Whenever there was combat on those planets, I think they could have been improved with more of the ME2/ME3 set piece treatment. Storming Cerberus bases could've been better.. Or even little side missions like that Elanos Haliat/War Hero fight. The original is sniper friendly, but it could've been cool with a sneaking/infiltrating behind enemy lines type of scenario.

But I liked the lonely feeling when exploring..

edit: A good example of the infiltration type of feel I mean is Rannoch/Admiral Koris mission. That's way better than anything in ME1.

Can't say I agree with Brovikk very often but in this case, I do agree as well. ME1 had absolutely fantastic uncharted worlds, at least when the outside areas are concerned.

I would really like to see those return. Just a few tweaks I would suggest:
1. No so many repetitive bases any more. I mean, I get that prefab building would be similar in shape and structure but a bit variety would be appreciated (and the repetitive caves were really just silly).
2. Bring back a vehicle, preferably the Mako with improved physics
3. A bit more variety to show differently developed planets. You might have a few completely undeveloped rugged uncharted planets but if you take us to worlds with e.g. upstarting colony projects, there should be at least a hint of some infrastructure (the asteroid from BDtS is a good example for something like this).

But whatever the end up doing, give us the UNCs back please! Make the galaxy feel big and awe-inspiring again.

Totally agree. I want to find skeletal remains of survey teams and mummified salarians. Leaving me only to wonder how they had met their fate. I want that desolate "man on the moon" feeling again. That sense of wonder and exploration. I want the game to once again show us how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah. More exploration is a must. ME3 nerf'd it hard. There was zero exploration in ME3. Terrible. ME2 scaled it back to just enough.Barely. Although the N7 missions in ME2 are more diverse than those of ME1, but theyabsence of a vehicle (Should return in the next game) made it feel like there was less exploration. ME3 had nothing. It was lame.

More exploration and going to planets and just wondering around looking for loot and bad guys to shoot in the face. Sounds good to me.

Remember those N7 missions in ME1 where you gotta help the marines defend against the Rachni and they keep coming the you gotta go down and fight a ton of Rachni in the mines. That was awesome. That whole segment of discovery then going from planet to planet find more and more info. That was so cool in ME1.

I hope in comes back.

None of the games were "lonely". There was literally always somebody nearby to talk to.

Completely agree.

That's what drew me into ME1. While there was a sense of urgency because Saren was going to do something bad of an undetermined nature, there wasn't the sense of rolling down a railroad track to disaster as there was for half of ME2 and all of ME3. As such, you felt enabled to go out and hit the dirt on all these uncharted worlds and learn gradually about the galaxy and the nebulous threat posed by the Reapers.

A future ME game really needs to bring this back, and a big part of it is ensuring that the game doesn't try to outdo the Reaper story, which would get ugly quick.

So, Bioware: More sci-fi, role-playing, and character development, please. Shooting stuff is fun too, but it shouldn't drive the story.

The plants weren't lonely, they were empty, there's a difference. Too much of the same backdrop with different colouring on most planets. If they are going to bring that back they better add more variety to the planets and more stuff to actually do on them.

ME2 DLC: Arrival, only with true sneaking would be great.

I think this could be an important part of the game, and that way be improved.

Empty planets? Reminds me of the first Unreal game. Lonely hero exploring unknown planet. and meeting only dead ex-teammates or various angry aliens. Ok, few not-angry aliens too, but the angry ones usually quickly killed them. Great times.

Lonely? No, anything like that has passed.

But cold and large locations and exploration feel? Totally can see that.

Depends on the plot. We don't see Jack Bauer wandering around Antarctica, the plains of Nebraska, or the Sahara much on 24, because he's got no reason to be in any of those places.

I think large empty planets should only be in the game if the new protagonist is something like a salvager or an archaeologist (how cool would playing as space Indy be?) to give the player a reason to go to those places. That and create actual different environments rather than differently textured mountains.

Sorry. Liara has already taken up that role. Along with Shadow Broker, Pure Biotic, Canon LI, and Commander Troi.

Ah that mystery of the unknown and a sense of uncertainty during exploration. Good times.

I wouldn't mind as long as Bioware gets it right this time.

Otherwise, there is no point in including it if it's going to be awful.

Me too. Sign me up.

While I love both ME2 and 3 (3 more than 2), I want the darkness, coldness and loneliness from ME1 to come back in the next game. Atmosphere-wise I find that one the strongest out of the 3 chapters. I'd welcom more mistery, more exploration, more ambiance, a bit more layed back and dark tone and even a bit of sci-fi horror elements here and there.

To be honest, I'd much rather the next game "explore" the actual civilizations of the galaxy. As much as I like ME1's atmosphere, I can't help but feel that the game's myopic exploration of the budding and underdeveloped sectors of Alliance space was a big reason ME3 fell flat on its face in a lot of moments.

ME2 focused on fleshing out the Terminus systems and the non-Council races like the Krogan, Geth and Quarians. But we never got a game to explore Council worlds like Palaven, Thessia, Surkesh, or even Earth. When these places fell in ME3, it's not surprising most people didn't actually feel the emotional loss like the characters did in the story.

If I had to choose, I'd prefer to check out something like Palaven and the intricacies of Turian society instead of one barren landscape after another.

Yessssssss! I love that feeling from ME1.
