There's many different ways to achieve it, but I know one pitfall to avoid: don't ret-con their story together with a letter that says "Oh, but I had to go away, no explanation... bye!"

It depends for every man, and for every woman.

What I think makes a great love interest might repulse some other people.

Strong manipulative and powerhungry female femme fatale with delusions of grandieur that is willing to kill anyone for her ambition.

Bioware hasnt added one of those yet though :(

(Morrigan doesent come close enough by far)

To me what makes a great LI is when relationship is the main focus once it is initiated. A person that will follow you anywhere, do anything for you but would accept nothing less in return from you as well. These people always fall under chaotic evil category and usually are portrayed as psychopaths. Unfortunately these LI's also work only when the main storyline is about the player specifically, otherwise player by canon has priorities above romance that keep them in the storyline, which means I won't get one in Inquisition by default. Oh well.

I'm with the people who said 1) variety (how about an emotionally strong, calm, reasonable character who can stand up to my character in a non-aggressive way, for variety?), and 2) the story has to make sense. There needs to be some dynamic, not just "Oh, so you chose me as your LI? Great, I now love you unconditionally, no matter what you do!" I want a romance to be believable ... doesn't have to be super-realistic, but believable.

They're hard to do once you realize that the person delivering those lines to you is just someone sitting in a studio reading a script. And that someone doesn't even know who you are, let alone have any interest in you.

Of course those characters are not more real than book or movie characters are. That doesn't diminish their story, though. We can either be determined on seeing them as what they really are (lots of code, pixels, the voice of some person who was getting paid for recording those lines etc.) - or just enjoy their story and let them give us feels and stuff ... :)

That dragon you beat? A bunch of pixels and code too. So was the adversary you outwitted. If you don't like using your imagination, RPGs are the wrong kind of game.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts don't love each other in real life, but people paid money to watch them pretend to do it onscreen.

He's probably referencing those people who take it too far, think they ARE the pc, and think Tali/Merrill/Leliana is their true love irl.

For me, the ideal love interest is one that is a fully-realized character without the PC. The actual personality, appearance, and even gender are flexible: It will depend on the individual.

But what can't be skimped on is a sense of "independence". Not necessarily "I don't need you, PC, I can handle myself". More of a "My personality is not defined by my relationship to you".

One of the many things I love about my wife is that while we love each other, and are enriched through our relationship and interaction... we're both still full people, with our own wants, needs, and goals, unrelated to our relationship.

I've know too many people (both in games and in the real world) who seem to define themselves by their relationships to others, and that's a big "no".

I'd actually like to see a LI who takes charge, who drives the relationship forward, who initiates.

Oh, man, the internet would explode. Remember when Anders even made ONE flirt at the PC? I suspect Bioware will either maintain the "PC initiates romance" status quo, or come up with a way of making it semi-optional. (Such as the player selecting the "heart" icon the first time around, but then the LI pursues the PC going forward.)

Submissiveness? A man who lets you take charge? One that is cute and goofy and follows you around like a lost puppy? A virgin so you know that the only woman he has ever been with and will ever be with is you? A man with eyes for you alone that seeks guidance in your "swaying hips"?

What makes a good love interest?

this depends on several factors

1)personality and lifestyle...some is ok with Isabella and Zevran and many would be not..so this mostly sl*t or virgin/not sl*t preferences
2)race...mostly important for elves and mages..for dwarfs and non-mages kossith or humans almost does not really matter
3)magic powers-connection with fade...dwarfes does not care especially if LI does not care...others must decide
4)religion, personal ideology and knoledge/education...do you would have someone as Morrigan or as Cassandra/Lelianna/Wynne...
5)nation/kingdom....this is like Tevinter Magister/non-mage Lord or Orlais noble/Templar or Corcari tribesmen...this is mostly connected with 4 factor, as alll can understand they all would be different persons

If the layout is exactly the same every time (like in DA2), you could just put a circular sticker on the screen that covers up that exact spot of the dialogue wheel. (I call that the "icon toggle").
