Unless the player presumes that his character can't ever do anything badly, this can't be a problem.

Well, like I keep saying, DA2 makes it easy ... follow the heart-marked line-path and love always wins. It's worse than the sappiest, saccharine Harlequin novels, where love at least stumbles once or twice in the novel.

Yes, obstacles appear in the relationships, and the heart icon triumphs over them all!  THAT is my main problem with it, that the ONLY way in DA2 to screw up a relationship was to cheat on your LI with another party member, or bring them with you to the Blooming Rose to watch you hire a prostitute (otherwise, if they didn't see you do it, you could go hourly). That was about it. As long as you picked the heart, you could never say the wrong thing

I know romances are not the main focus of the game, but even the sidequests make some slight sense and present some slight challenge. There was my main problem.

Female, sexy, very high sex appeal, a great outfit, very interesting background, deep character, luscious lips, bad ass in combat and loves you like Leliana did the Warden:)

Well there's a difference between [what kind of romance/LI I like] and [what I consider a good romance].

Liara in Mass Effect has a very nicely developed romance arc, I'm just not a fan of hers or the nature of that relationship. In contrast, DA2's Isabela has traits that I really like in a female character, but I find her romance rather laughable.

Up to now, Jack is far and away my favorite BioWare romance -- character and relationship both "hit" for me.

Hmmm. I would like if an LI would be more in charge because being the leader of every group and even having the guy be so submissive is weird, at least to me. I personally loved Zevrans romance because over time you got to know him and he didn't really love you until near the end so it was really well paced. Honestly though, to make a great love interest is to have more than 6 conversations with a LI, that's what made DA2's romances meaningless to me. Here's hoping the Grey warden dude is an LI :))

****** and ass!

But seriously the most important things are probably an amazing storyline to go along with the romance, good character development, the ability to keep me entertained with their dialogue and of course good romantic moments between the LI and PC.

I personally think that a great LI depends on the character you are playing.

For instance, a LI like Liara or Leliana would be great with an overall good/help others type of character, while someone Like Morrigan fits best with a selfish/do what I want and sod the consequences type.

Brooding, obviously. And extremely large manparts.

On the serious side, I like more complicated love stories, where it isn't just falling in love and happily even after. Some sort of conflict or obstacle just makes the payoff so much better IMO. So I guess that means the love intrest should have a cool backstory, possibly with baggage (not the dead-ex wife kind of baggage, but more in the Leliana's secret past kind of way). I like characters who are not perfect in general, so that's cool in a LI as well.

I liked Alistair 'cuz I like humor. I also liked Zevran because he needed a little more work to get to really know. I romanced Fenris in DA2 because I had two choices unless I wanted to be celibate...and Fenris was not as screwed up as Anders, which is really saying something. His cranky moody thing got very old though.

I would like someone manly who is not damaged goods, mysterious is okay (even good) but not emotionally damaged like Fenris/Anders. It should take some effort to get things going though (the guy in Neverwenter Nights comes to mind, can't remember his name, starts with a C, really deep voice - Cavendir?).. Mostly as a woman I would like some hetero choice.

To me its more about a character being well written and having a well written romance arc that makes him or her a great romance. Two good examples are Alistair and Morrigan.

Alistair comes to mind. Even though he comes off as whiny and a bit of a man-child, he grows over the course of the story, and definitely was written with the idea in mind that he would be a romance option. The same goes with Morrigan, who starts off as very guarded but ultimately reveals her softer side as she feels love for the very first time. What's great is both characters can also grow like this as the PC's best friend.

Basically, what makes a great love interest for me is someone who you develop a relationship with throughout the game. Again, with the examples I provided, Alistair starts off as a somewhat awkward goofball but ultimately becomes protective and shows off the gentleman side. Morrigan revels in what she can take, challenging the PC but later shows that soft spot. What makes both of these characters even more powerful is that the relationship CAN change. An unhardened Alistair on the throne knows that duty comes before love and, without the Dark Ritual, is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good and for his love. Morrigan is not fond of sharing (so forget it if you want to keep Leliana or Zevran around), and in the end no matter what she walks away and puts her agenda first.

I think a character who is written with an intention to be a potential romance option works better than one who is either provided as optional content just to be a romance option or becomes an LI in subsequent games due to the high fanbase request.

The basics for a guy (i.e. most players of these games)

-they need to be good looking, fewer people want to romance a fugly companion

-they need to sound #$%^able, Alistar scored high in this regard, with that boyish british accent.

These two things, more than any other... greases the wheels of attachment that makes it more worthwhile.  So it is in life, so it is in games.

Take these lessons, and enact them in game.

So let it be written, so let it be Done.

A great love interest requires a subtle mix of humor, snark, flirtation, and companionship. Alistair is loved as a romance interest because he's funny and sweet. Other characters are loved because of the character development they undergo, such as Zevran, Morrigan, Isabela, and Fenris. While other characters are greatly desired as love interests due to their relationship with the protagonist, such as Cullen, Varric, etc.(I'd suggest you could also include Cassandra a little, since in DA2 she seems to almost hero-worship Hawke by the end.) My favorite love interests include all of these qualities. They have funny, witty flirtations. They have a solid bond with the protagonist that grows over time. I especially enjoy seeing the characters grow over the course of the story.

Zevran goes from a hedonist to a committed partner. Morrigan goes from using the Warden to trying to protect them. Alistair is like the sweet puppy that follows you home begging to be loved. Fenris is a rage-y, snarky version of a puppy. My favorite romances so far have been Alistair, Zev, and Fenris. I enjoyed Anders' romance as well, but it's a controversial topic since he uses Hawke in a very.. extreme way.

Then there are several characters that I would've loved to romance that we couldn't. Cullen, Sigrun, Nathaniel, Gorim, and Tamlen. I would love to romance Cullen, but he will always be the romance that should've happened for Amell/Surana. And I would've loved to romance Nathaniel with a Cousland. It would have brought the Cousland-Howe struggle full circle. Some characters have that connection with other characters that makes it feel like something should have happened between them. Gorim's short romance with Aeducan is tragic, as is Tamlen's with Mahariel. I love the connection, and history between these characters, and it would be great to have a romance option like that.

Sigrun would've just been fun. She was the cheeriest character in Awakening, and it would've been a different type of romance.

Depends on my characters. Personally I still consider the constant flirtations with Bishop in NWN2 one of the most satisfying implied romantic subplots for morally questionable characters. Just a shame they left the romance unfinished and cut it from the game. Picking on my least favourite character by flirting with my most favourite was brilliant. For morally bankrupt characters.

And then MotB came around and I learned Casavir was a fixed canon LI...

Just a shame they left the romance unfinished and cut it from the game. Picking on my least favourite character by flirting with my most favourite was brilliant.

I also like the Player/Bishop bonding over their mutual hatred of Casavir, but I personally liked that the implied romance wasn't totally finished. Jump into bed before the final battle? Sure, Bishop would do that, but....

Their feelings for each other? I don't think Obsidian could have written anything that really came close to the "Let's just go" conversation. It revealed a kind of vulnerability, I think everyone knew Bishop wasn't going to stick around to get himself killed, but the fact that for just a moment he cared enough to ask you to just leave with him... It worked for me.

Of course, not being able to take him up on the offer was a little annoying... My Swash wasn't really that invested in the whole save the world thing.

What makes a great Love interest?

How about some NATURAL PROGRESSION?

Maybe I'm just still too stuck on Valen Shadowbreath, but the fact you can now dive right into romance, barely before you have a name, that irks me. The fact that characters know you five minutes and you're suddenly the best of friends... I don't get it.

I still remember what it was like to meet Valen for the first time, to hear him voice his blatant mistrust and question my Archer's "true" agenda. I didn't like him, not at all.

There's Taia, trying to save the world, and this little pest thinks he can just question her intentions? She's already saved the world once, she's going to bloody do it again. By the Gods, if he wasn't a weapon master I'd have left him there to rot. But he was, I was stuck with him and I'll tell you what... I am so glad.

Valen has the most beautifully paced character progression that I've seen. He slowly blossoms from this stand-offish stoic into a warm and respectful friend. The change is so seamless that I didn't even notice that he had become one of my most favourite characters, I caught myself laughing at his dry humour and all I could think was: When did I start liking you?

That feeling. That revelation that creeps up on you so slowly you barely notice... That is what makes a great character, romantic or not.

/Opinion.

What makes a great love interest?

Absolutely nothing.

You either love 'em or you don't, simple as that. And I think just about any cliche, sin or broody/angsty/over emotional/unstable trait could be done correctly to the point that you even like THAT.

Errr, well, this is just my opinion anyway.

I'd actually like to see a LI who takes charge, who drives the relationship forward, who initiates.

Oh, man, the internet would explode. Remember when Anders even made ONE flirt at the PC? I suspect Bioware will either maintain the "PC initiates romance" status quo, or come up with a way of making it semi-optional. (Such as the player selecting the "heart" icon the first time around, but then the LI pursues the PC going forward.)

The negative reaction was almost exclusively from straight guys who felt uncomfortable having another guy hit on them. I never heard any complaints about Isabella's in your face comments. I would love to have a LI that takes charge and persues the PC.

Same.

I primarily like intelligent, passionate, sensible and open minded people for love interests. This applies both to games and real life.

For me the best love interests in Dragon Age so far are Morrigan, Merill and Zevran. My favorite is Morrigan

Morrigan because she is smart, sensible, direct and passionate.

Merrill because she is passionate, sarcastic / trolling and somewhat intelligent.

Zevran because he is very practical, open minded and humorous. Also, he is intelligent in his craft which is assassinating.

I did not like the others love interests as love interests but would not mind having them as good friends or friends with benefits.

Alistair is naive and not exactly intelligent. I have nothing against him liking cheese or giving roses or anything of the sort but his naivety and lack of insight, which I can understand because he was in the Chantry for most of his life. However, it does make him attractive to me. He is a really good friend to all my Wardens though.

Leliana to me is the typical woman who fools around, gets into trouble and then becomes a born again religious woman. Hypocrisy is strong and so is her blinded devotion to a faith with many faults. i like her laughs, her  protective nature but there is nothing more I like in her. I usually harden her the as soon as I can in DAO because to me she should accept reality & reality is she is a bard and she made a mistake of not watching her back. That does not mean she should go and become a born-again.

Isabella is the type of woman I have no problems flirting or having drinks or fighting with but nothing more. Not going to be romantically involve myself with a promiscuous, STD-riddled woman. Just no. Too risky. Plus she is not exactly honest for the most part. Doesn't mean I despise her but I am wary of her.

Fenris and Anders to me are two sides of the same coin. Both are extreme, both had their live irrevocably changed by magic (one by lyrium and one by fade spirit) and both hate with a passion. While I understand them and trust them to an extent, I cannot be romantically attracted to anyone with that level of damaged goods.

Sebastian is pretty much like Leliana except he is even more born-again. Born-again people are just not my type.

Other characters that i would have liked to have as love interests.

Varric. Seriously Bioware..they make the most sensible and level headed guy with great sense of humor and make him unavailable. WHY ?!

Aveline. I don't think I need to elaborate this one. One of the few sensible characters that looks good, loyal and passionate and she is not available. Should have had the option to make her reject Donnic and love Hawke. Grrr

Wynne. Now I know she is old but she is also a figure of moderation, she has some sense of humor, she has a nice rack for her age, like drinking ale and is intelligent. I understand why Bioware did not make her a romance option but still a flirtation option would have been nice.

My favorite Bioware romances so far are actually Carth and Bastila. I liked all the DAO ones too, but I don't feel like any of them have had quite as many obstacles to overcome as in either of the KOTOR romances. Most of the romances now just seem a little too.....easy I guess.

Dynamism is all that really matters. That they don't represent one thing and have multiple facets are the only must. I think one reason so many people are attracted to so many bioware characters is MOST (Oghren never really made it XD) are so dynamic and can be seen as people rather than a personality cut out.

Someone who is believable and interesting-not a walking cliche made out of cheap cardboard. The character must be mutli-faceted, I don't want them to be a walking caricature whose sole purpose it is to push the templar or mage agenda down my throat because reasons.
